Man, I’ve had a lot of drum machines. Some I shouldn’t have parted with (Jomox X-base 09 being one of them), but having just acquired the RD-9, I can say that it is a really fun machine to jam with. Putting aside all of the “it doesn’t sound like a real 909” crap, I can assure you, that the RD-9 hits hard! I’d love to snag an Alph base one day too.

same here and the best sounding drum machines are my DFAM, modular drums, and RYTM. The Roland boutiques need a lot of effects processing to sound good and hate the Roland user interface so poor on the recreation of TB303 and TR08

No Vermona? I have AB and Drm Mk IV Trigger. Together it’s like a yin-yang delicious percussion oreo of complimentary opposites. Really a shame what the MIDI revolution did in some ways-having trigger in for every voice adds so many more creative live possibilities when you have a modular system, or even just one good module (fantastic to use with Vermona’s Random Rhythm module!)

I looked at a modor and bought an alpha base. Outside sequencers help unlock even more fun with the jomox. It goes into my studio really well. Modor is still on my list but I would take a look at the lxr-02. Not as many options but sounds great!

Did you really replace a tr-909 w/ an RD-9?!?! I can see selling it to fund lots of other things, but... I sure miss my 909 (sold it 20+yrs ago when I wanted to go all digital/daw and I still regret that decision today).
@winesynths
@winesynths 9 ай бұрын
Totally! RD-9 rocks! A friend just lend me his TR-707 the other day. It's nice, but now I really don't miss my old 707/727 duo anymore. It's still fun to play and sounds nice. But for everyday studio production, the RD's is simply the better tool now. Also, over the 909. Just for all the MIDI to analog sync possibilities! And the RD-9 also sounds very authentic. After all, a dry 909 or 808 is not as spectacular as people might think. It always needs processing and single out mixing to sound really great. If you know how to do it, the Behringer IMHO totally does the job! And I am really not a vintage Taliban. I also like to simply play drum machine samples in my Ableton Drum Rack on the Push2. To me, the best and most versatile drum machine that exists.

I only have a small Volca drum and in the long run, I want to get a drum machine with more options and boom. These are more or less golden times in terms of the amount of equipment on the market (less good times for the wallet). It is difficult to choose one device over the other. Well, I don't know how difficult it is for a KZbin channel to get temporally provided test equipment? A video of the Soma Pulsar 23 and Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 would be exciting.

Have you tried sampling these drum machines? Maybe you could do a comparison with the real sound of the drum machine vs the sampled reproduction doing the same pattern. That would be fun.

Of course! I love Abletons Drum Rack a lot, especially in combination with the Push2 it's just like a Drum Computer! And, of course, I always feed it with my own samples! But at the end, the real drum machines often have this special groove that is hard to reproduce in the DAW.
@x10dc90
@x10dc90 Жыл бұрын
@@winesynths Yeah, hardware will be better for the workflow IMO, though changing the pitch or speed of the samples can't be done with analog gear like the RD-9 except for the digital sounds of course. I'm gonna sample my RD-6 so that I can play reverse cymbals on my Volca Sample.

Interesting comparison / lineup. I agree, they are pretty different. And I disagree with the Alpha Base being able to sound like a 909. Which is a good thing imho. With this model, Jürgen finally let loose of the idea, so the Alpha Base really has its own, unique and to my ears GREAT sound. I'd buy one in a second if I had the space. I never really looked at the Modor DR-2, but this one is very special, too. Likable. Regarding the RD-line, I just don't like their sound and also the timing. Out of these, the RD-9 is the least harmful to my ears and well-being 😀 #RolandTR909 for life \m_

@@wackerburg for the most part, I think drum machines are pretty boring and cliched, especially compared to the possibilities in modular synths (and actually, I think the same thing about most integrated/non modular synths), but I am also someone who came into synths after 15 years of playing classical guitar and the only thing I spent money on in that time was new strings once a month. So it depends on your perspective.

Jomox blows the others away. RD-9 is cool too, but a little too true to the original to excite me. The Modor I just don't get the appeal of, especially when considering its price tag. I also think all of the Modor stuff is hideous... their design language sucks, I'm sorry.
