What a fantastic ambassador for the city of New Orleans. The shot at the 48 second mark, of Jon leaning on a car underneath the interstate, with the painting of Alan Toussaint behind him, is a place I drive by every day on my way to work. The marching band featured in the video is, I believe, the St. Augustine High School marching band. And the young lady standing in front of the oak trees is someone I follow on Facebook, who's carrying on the Mardi Gras Indian tradition. And I just learned that apparently Mr. Batiste is an alum of both NOCCA and St. Augustine. This video makes me happy. Thank you, Mr. Batiste.

There is such a rich weave of historical culture in this video, from the drill team to the various vocal techniques, to gospel robes. The dance silhouette is right out of the early 30s and the mohair suits from the great soul groups of the 60s. And the cars! And, of course the whole performance is lifted by a modern sensibility - lots of powerful women and girls. I can't get enough.

Freedom is the word Jon sings. Great touch with the Hammond B3 sending out the gospel groove. New Orleans looks fantastic and Louis Armstrong is smiling from above. God bless Jon Batiste. "Alice Cooper: I think what happened was that the old guys in the Grammy organisation who were voting didn’t really recognise any of the names except Jethro Tull.
