Jon E Cash founder of music movement called Da Black Ops which consists of Dread D, Charmzy etc came into the uk garage scene around 1999/2000 with a hip hop inspired spin on dark garage.
There are a few claims to starting the genre grime from Wiley, Dizzee, So Solid crew, Musical Mobb & even Jon E Cash himself in this episode we unearthed the first ever Grime tune using discography release dates and going over the elements/criteria that makes it Grime.
This interview is a grime history lesson and an insight to the beginning of a legendary genre that today feels like it’s own version of UK Rap.

Black Ops are legnds. DJ Charmzy in particular. Big up for this episode. Can we get more recent dons too? Like Blay Vision, IZCO and Jammz? I think Footsie, Spyro, Kid D, IronSoul need to be shouted on here too

D’Explicit was actually earlier than most think he had a ep out in 2001 tracks called Dirty Pot & red brick road - check it out it’s on the cuff of garage into grime. Macabre Unit was slightly later the first track was Slow Jam in 2003 (check it out) Jammers Earliest track was a track called Jammer Dubz on locked on records, come out 2002 (check it out, deffo grime but not the earliest) Slimzee & Karnage claim the first grime track was Wiley - Year 2000, which he made in ‘99. Musical Mob - Pulse X was produced in 2001 But then DJ Virus claimed he produced Rude Sting in ‘98. It’s hard to differentiate where it started but personally for me I’d say it was Wiley who really started it eskimo was 2000, know we was 2000 Dizzee had early stuff out to (ready for war and round we go but was 2001) Jon E Cash early stuff was in 2000, but I wouldn’t even class it as grime was just garage really, tracks like hoes don’t mean shit etc. He was early but it wernt grime, no disrespect to Jon E Cash / Black Ops they were heavy in the start War Etc went off in raves

The time line falls from 99-2001 the grimey garage sound, it was a transition between UKG and grime, 2002 the grime sound was there but it was still experimenting, by 2003 you had a whole new ready genre where there were sets in raves which were all grime instrumentals no garage, eskimo dance sidewinder etc there was still allot of garage being played obviously but allot of sets would be strictly grime.

Dark side garage came about around 1998 there was one particular tune that stood out like a sore thumb out of all on rotation at the time , I can’t remember the name of it , but I remember at that interval we were calling tunes after that “ dark side “ .

@@executivs Only track I can think of in ‘98 that’s dark garage has to be Masterstepz - Melody, Other than that for me the stand outs all can much later, Wookie - Storm, Narrows - Saved Soul, Menta - Sounds Of The Future, Oris Jay - Biggin Up The Massive

Great podcast. The soca tune was Stageshow Riddim by Skep, used to tear up raves! A great story I went to the record shop for the 1st time in 2002 back when i first heard grime. Guy behind the counter chucked on a few vinyl on the player loud in the shop that he just got. War VIP 4x4 with the green label was one of them, hundreds of vinyl later that was one of the first ones i got. Classic🎶🎶🎶

Jonny Cash Old Skool … you man should try get some of the Transmission 1 FM crew ( Grove ) they was holding down West in the Jungle era then times Kool FM and DeJa Vu and OnTop were tanning up London airwaves …. Transmission One imo set the pace for what came later , Ice FM, Freeze FM and LayLow FM which tbh is Transmission 1’s baby brother in a sense .

Transmission was legendary, but very inconsistent on for a bit off for months then back on sometimes even off for year or 2, Laylow fm was different I feel it gave the younger up and coming a chance but from speaking to the Laylow management they do say laylow was born from transmission, kool fm was always the leading jungle dnb station

@@Smalls-t7q Yeah Transmission was mad inconsistent but let’s be str8 , they was all Road man through and through , not mocking no other stations but it takes a level of commitment running a station them days , managing schedules , logistics of the antenna, also promotions , ads etc… I feel other stations had more people musical dedication more career ambitious respectfully. Mans from the ends so man knows them , from back them days. But the still repped W good you had Mc’s like IC3 , Baby Dre , Dj Chrissy D, Kenny, Sidewinder/ Tipper etc …. Man I forgetten bare names …..that’s like 30 years back The dress code we brought to the rave culture was legendary ! are ting was different , but East and North did show out to as did South
