A few of your facts are incorrect. He did not work as a bartender at a sleazy Times Square bar. He worked as a waiter at a restaurant on 56th street. I know this because I worked with him and we were friends. We were actually singing waiters. and John's singing voice was magnificent. He dreamed of being on broadway in musicals. He had done stage plays in high school and college. We waited on tables at night and he worked for his family's roofing business during the day

Thanks for your input. Hexum was quoted “four thousand people all decadent as hell. All the drugs, all the drinks. He continues about his bartending abilities being poor, and he had to fake his knowledge to get the job. I’m not giving you a hard time, that’s from an interview he did. I appreciate your comment and knowledge!

@@DearlyDepartedTours In retrospect, you are probably correct. I'm remembering a large popular dance club called Bond's on Broadway and 45th street.. But I believe he was only there briefly. By the way, I liked how in KC's short video of his memorial plaque, she refers to him as Jack. That is how I always knew him. We never called him Jon or Jon Erik - just Jack. The last time I saw him was when he was visiting NYC, after he had moved out to LA. He seemed so happy and excited for the future. I learned of his death while rIding a downtown subway - glancing across the car to a man reading the NY Post and seeing Jack's picture on the front page with the shocking headline.

@@jamesplatt4555Hi James! Thanks for the story that you shared about knowing him. In the research I did for my tribute website I talked to a lot of his friends, coworkers, family, people he grew up with, and you’re right, they all called him Jack. So much so that it rubbed off on me and that’s how I refer to him. But it was also the theme for the website: You May know Jon-Erik Hexum, but you don’t know Jack! 😉 I’ve had so many lovely stories shared with me over the years and the stories are always good. I kept thinking somewhere a bad story had to surface but it never has. He was just a really nice, kind, caring man. Heart of Gold. But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know firsthand. 😉

Yes, more than a few handsome and talented actors died so young from 'freak' accidents or from personal issues they had like drinking, drugs, etc. He appeared to be pretty grounded for having anything at his fingertips, its VERY easy to feel like a king when you're in your 20's with all that talent and looks.

Thank you. I got the idea from a fan who was sad there wasn’t a place to go and pay your respects. So I looked into getting him a cenotaph. Valhalla made sense as it was so close to his house, and Valhalla is a Viking term, we know Jack was from Norway. 😊 I held a fundraiser and people contributed to get the plaque installed. I love that he’s now listed on celebrity grave sites. Now he’ll always be remembered. 😊

The old Chevy with the white top that Jon-Erik is leaning against in the opening to Cover-Up was his car that he used as his daily driver. Jon-Erik stopped at the newsstand. I managed 3 or 4 times while I was there. Jon-Erik was very nice. He looked wonderful with no makeup on. I had asked for an autographed photo, and he was planning on bringing me 2 or 3, but he was a very busy man. Jon-Erik was very nice to people who recognized him, but he wanted them to be quiet so he could look for the magazines he wanted and not be mobbed. I was very sad when this happened, I had seen him 2-3 weeks before the event. Rest In Peace. Very well done Scott. I do believe Jon-Erik and Jennifer O'Neal had a beef, but it didn't have anything to do with this event, he had everything to live for, this was a mistake that cost him his life. NEVER put any gun to your head or any part of you. Guns are not toys. Always handle a gun as if it's loaded.
@LadyKC67

He and Jennifer had an interview with a reporter, and the interview itself was a bit tense, she was kind of undermining him. The reporter did a separate article about how Jennifer was late to arrive, kept everyone waiting, and did her best to make him look bad during the interview. He, being the kind guy he was, blew it off and still treated the reporter well, even signing a poster for her before he left. Going by that I’d say he did have a beef with her. She’s the one who said he was always screwing around with the guns on the set, and people who really knew him said that was baloney. My personal opinion (and it’s just my opinion) was that she tried to get the better of him one more time after he died and wasn’t here to defend himself. I don’t like her. I’m sorry. She’s a bit of a B*tch. Thanks for sharing your story with us. 😊

Thank you for honoring him. As a 16 year old I adored him. I convinced my mom to drive me out to Tenafly NJ where he had gone to HS. I created a memorial there, with a framed photo, candles and flowers. It felt important to me and it helped. Later, I also wrote to his mom and sent her a poem I had written. She actually responded and was very kind. Grateful.

I did not recognize the name but as soon as revolver and blanks was mentioned I knew immediately what event this was. With only CBS & NBC as TV channels and no newspaper subs back then, I was only aware of major or highly unusual events. But I probably heard it from other police officers. I was a junior in high school when this happened, having just moved to Texas a few months before and was working at a small grocery store in the afternoons when I saw the newspaper headline. Still seems like yesterday that I was watching "Voyagers!" on Sunday nights and never missed an episode from 1982-1983, if I remember correctly. He was my hero and the very definition of pure masculine beauty, and that is when I finally admitted to myself that I would never love women. By all accounts he was so kind and loving; something that was missing from my teenage years and so I have made it my mission the last 40 years to be as good a person as he was, and to reach my full potential physically. He was taken way too soon and in many ways I never got over it, but have never told anyone before now. Thank you for this documentary and for keeping his memory alive.

Hi Scott, Thank you for this. When Jon-Erik died so tragically in 1984, I was 14 years old. I am 54 now. I can remember almost everything you told us about Jon perfectly. I watched Voyagers and Cover Up. I was a big fan and totally infatuated with him as a teen. I just loved everything about Jon. That black and white article you shared from the LA Times, I cut it out of the paper as soon as it got delivered and kept it in a special box with other mementos under my bed. I looked at it every day and kissed it before going to school and at night I held it and cried before going to bed. I had every article about him that was in the paper which is why I knew so much about him. I knew about the organ donations and how his mother and brother set everything into motion. They wanted Jon's memory to live on.. I didn't really know too much about organ donation at 14 but through the articles about him I learned that his corneas, kidneys and even his skin, which I didn't even know was a thing had been harvested. It was then I decided to become an organ and tissue donor. What kid decides to be a donor at 14? I informed my friends and family about my wishes in the hopes they would become donors also? Now that I have my own family my adult children know about my wishes to be a donor and I hope they will too. Jon-Erik's memory still resides in my heart and because of him my heart and other organs will hopefully go to people who need them in the event I must leave this world earlier than expected? It doesn't matter if there aren't many groups on social media about Jon. Real friends and fans like myself will always remember the wonderful man he was. It's people like you Scott that keep actors' memories alive. Sorry if I rambled but I felt compelled to share.

His memory has not faded for me. He was stunning and a wonderful actor who elevated the material I saw him in -- Voyagers and Cover Up, specifically. In 1984 I was just starting my life, having graduated from college in 1983. I had spent my late teens and early 20s as a fan of Jon-Erik. Prior to that the only celebrity death that had really moved me had been Pete Duel, when I was MUCH younger (10 yo) in 1971. Thanks for another great video. I'm always amazed at the details you uncover!

What a lovely thing to do for Jon - Erik.... a memorial... what a tragic loss, poor man. He was a stunning human to look at and as you say, he was a wonerful human too. If he is in a place that he can see what you did for him, I am sure he must be smiling. x Love from Karen from Australia....x

What a devastating 😢 loss. And to think, this kind of thing is still happening to this day. 😕 JEH seemed like the whole package. I didn't know he was musically gifted, could sing and was well educated. And it sounds like he was just an all around nice guy. All the more tragic 😥 I'm glad he could help people with organ donation following his passing. Fly high, Jon 🕊 🕊 🕊 🕊 🕊

I happen to be reading the article on him in the play girl magazine. I only bought the magazine because he was on the cover. I adored him. As soon as I heard the tragic news I cried and cried. I actually sent him a get well card to the hospital he was in. I was 26 years old and I had his poster on my wall. He’s was the most sexiest man I had ever seen. His voice had me hypnotized. He was one of the very few actors that I was crazy about. I was truly heartbroken that I would never see him again. There’s an actor now who reminds me somewhat of him Henry Cavill, I love him just as much. Eric you were definitely a man I would have loved to have gotten to know. You were taken way too soon. I still feel sadness and did shed tears when I was taken back to that day. I dearly miss him still.

Very, very well-done and respectfully so. He seemed to be too good for Hollywood. Knowing what we now know about the things you have to do and the oaths you have to take to make it in Hollywood, he seemed to salt-of-the-earth to fit in in that town. I was a child when he died. My mother and I used to always sit and watch The Voyagers together. And I confirmed to watch him on Cover-Up with my mom. I’ll never forget her being on one end of the sofa and me on the other and she said ‘that poor man died this week. He was the same age as me.’ I’ll never forget how I felt when she told me that. It was almost as if I knew him. I was maybe 7 at that time and he was so young, like my mother. I never forgot about him. Nobody in Hollywood, since can compare - I’ve never seen a more beautiful man, in all my life, still, to this day, 40 years later. What a decent soul he seemed to be. People just don’t understand that when you are physically and mentally exhausted and severely sleep deprived, you will do things that just make no sense. This man was incredibly bright, talented and beautiful who just made a mistake a mistake while being a sleep-deprived state. You really treated this story with grave and compassion - Thank you. Hard to believe it has been 40 years.

I wanted to thank you personally for talking about this young man because I remember watching that show with my grandmother and I could never remember what it was called! I only remember because the song holding out for a hero would play at the beginning of the episode. I remember them trying to replace him for the second season and it didn't work out very good

I remember well, I was 18 in 84. Voyagers was essential viewing every week, as I loved history and science fiction even as a little kid. He was so beautiful, and you could see the intelligence and kindness in his eyes, that's what really hooked me. It was so sad when he passed, and years later I remembered JEH when it happened to Brandon Lee.
