Jon Faddis was one of the few trumpet players who dared to follow the Dizzy Gillespie school of trumpet playing. Those high notes and rippling arpeggios are a Dizzy staple. When Dizzy heard this solo he must have checked himself to see if he were somehow still playing.

We met him that night and ended staying for two or three hours before exiting the back door to Carnegie with him. He and his wife are the two coolest, most in touch with their spirituality, and kindest people I've ever met. Dream come true.

Still can't get over the utter completeness of this solo and how it formed a truly unique moment in Jazz history when the pupil (Faddis) took centre stage while the master (Dizzy) standing back, must have been bursting with pride.

This blows me away. Every single note is big, clean and full of carefully crafted nuances. High register just screams yet stays relaxed. He feels like he can just do anything he wants.

His work in the 1977 movie 'The Gauntlet' is tremendous too, it has a great score by Jerry Fielding and a pretty cool plot, if you haven't seen it.

Fantastic, Faddis showing all his tone and talents, beyond the normal high flying in the top notes. 5 stars for a genius.

@@tcideneb1 You're a fucking dick man, if someone puts in enough time it's never wasted. In a few years of hard practice anyone could reach this level of play including you. Just cause you gave up on yourself doesn't mean you should go encouraging others to as well.

Guys I know this story is stupid hard to believe, but roll with me. Basically fell in love with Jon the day I started playing trumpet and saw this video. In April, Conor, a friend of mine who plays saxophone in my high school's band and I went to New York to see him in Zankel Hall. We went that night, I think it was the 27th to see him and met a man Jorge (holding the last name for it seems appropriate to do so) who sat next to my mom, who went with us, and gave her his backstage passes.

J.F.'s horn is a Schilke B6L same model the late Bill Chase played on. Mouthpiece a custom job, no doubt made by Scott Laskey. Makes no difference though this guy could pick up a Coke bottle and make it sing.

I saw him interviewed on TV. In that interview he said that back in the day playing in small clubs in NY, he found that being so close to the people there, he was blowing the trumpet straight into their faces. So, the only option was to have the bell of the trumpet fixed to point out over the heads of the audience. I can only assume that he was telling the truth.

In response to the guys who were asking about Jon's trumpet in this video, he's playing a Schilke B6L ("L" meaning a tunable bell). In the early 80's Jon switched to a Schilke S42-JF which was designed specifically for him and still plays that horn to this day.
