When you’re a new aviator, your squadron will hold an event where they will name you (usually while drunk…) based on what you look like, what your name sounds like and the dumbest thing you’ve done in the Squadron up to that point. You don’t get any input. The named Squadron mates get to vote- and that’s it. My husband’s call sign is “Joker” because they thought he looked like Matthew Modine in “Full Metal Jacket”. It’s stuck for 17 years. My kids all refer to the aviators by their call signs and one guy even put it on his wedding announcement. Your call sign becomes a very real part of your identity. And all because some drunk guys decided you look like Matthew Modine!
