Absolutely love Jon Herington, I've seen Steely Dan live three or four times. His work is amazing on how he covers and puts his own imprint on their catalog. Takes an amazing player to solo over all those charts, and he kills it. His choice of tones are also incredible. One observation in regards to this conversation, Al Dimeola has spent a lifetime improving his guitar composition, and his work and progress is absolutely mind boggling. So to imply the guitar and guitar composition has not evolved like other instruments, is without question ignoring his work and accomplishments as well as others, (Michael Hedges comes to mind). There are those who have certainly evolved guitar composition. Mr. Dimeola has moved guitar playing and guitar composition forward without question. But otherwise loved the interview, and great insight on Jazz guitar playing. -Peace.

To have the knowledge and virtuosity to hear, see and understand what the music of a particular situation is calling for...and then be able to execute...brilliant. Great interview!!!

Love the conversation about the limitations of guitar compared to piano. I remember hanging out with Abercrombie one time, and he told me didn’t practice guitar anymore. He said all his musical time was spent on piano. Honestly, my breakthrough harmony moments of clarity have almost all been on the piano, and then I tried to figure out how to do it on the guitar.

Davis wanted Hendrix, so he tapped the wonderful Pete Cosey instead.

Couldn't get through it. Bakert won't shut his pie hole long enough to let Jon get a thought out. Jon's a contemplative, relaxed, soft spoken guy. I wanted to hear what he had to say. Instead it's jazz Howard Stern.

With the death in 2017 of Walter Becker, it seems almost sacrilegious to see Steely Dan now performing with just one guitarist.

@@jazzguitartoday Totally agree, it's just the memories of seeing Steely Dan in April 1974 when Baxter and Dias were the epitome of a twin-lead guitar approach to their music. Even without a horn section and female backing vocalists they were one of the best live bands on the planet that year.

They actually have a second guitarist performing with the band these days if I'm not mistaken, maybe partly because they're playing the Royal Scam a lot, which is a guitar-heavy album.
