This is how I felt for Christopher Hitchens as well. Always knew such an obscure piece of knowledge that seemed like it was going off on a tangent, but he would always have a profound point. But I would say Hitchens was a better orator. Chomsky is certainly a walking encyclopedia, but I feel Hitchens was a walking encyclopedia and thesaurus. These guys are special. No doubt about it. Yeah but that's only part of the equation. Interviews with Chomsky only give Chomsky's view points. Nobody is there to break down his mistakes or add alternative facts counter to Chomsky's. The first question I'd like Chomsky to answer is, what gives anyone the right to run any country? That's in response to Chomsky's what gives America the right to interfere with another country? In Venezuela, for instance, what gives Maduro the right to control Venezuela? Instead of blaming Maduro for bad policies he blames America for interfering. How does Chomsky rectify Maduro's poor leadership? The answer seems to be let it fester.

This is an aside, but I’m so happy your sound engineer knows how to record Chomsky in his age. As a musician it can be so frustrating on other platforms to hear someone throw up a mic with standard settings on this wonderful but soft-spoken man. The noise floor and plosives shoot through the roof! Yes! SM7b with the highs rolled off! Ok I’m stopping my sound rant there.
@Paulyb75 жыл бұрын
@thomas thompson your compression and EQ settings will handle a great deal of the stuff Chris is referring to, but reverb and delay (used with restraint) are other basic tools you can use to give depth and body to a vocal mix. The straight signal from microphone to DAW isn't usually going to sound the way you'd like it to sound in its final form, especially with someone who has lots of vocal quirks (speaking of myself in particular, my voice tends to need de-essing, EQ-work to even out nasality, etc). And before you even get to recording, the gear you use and how you setup the gear in the room you're recording in is probably the most important aspect of a recording. The world of sound recording is so much fun and you'll never run out of things to learn!
@johnchristopher30325 жыл бұрын
@nmeunier Fear is a feeling, it does not need a sound justification. If people believe they are under attack, or will be attacked, they will behave that way, even if there is no real reason to believe. The people of Sparta were known to carry this sort of paranoia, as well. For example, they were reluctant to send their forces too far from home. Even when the risk was low and the reward was high, they were held back by this deep feeling that someone would come to take back this 'stolen' land. So they stayed home, always training and preparing for battle.

@Bryzz Lull What have they influenced? Elections. Policies. Look at private ownership of the internet, which was developed by the government with tax-payer money! That is the influence. It influences a massive percentage of what people desire. Look at advertising today. Look at what is being done with the internet. Look at the hundreds of commercials of lawsuits about different corporations that knew very well that their products were harmful or even deadly. Look at Johnson and Johnson with the talcum powder. People are born into massive amounts of debt that simply isn't going to be paid back, when the massively wealthy get to sit around on gilded couches and drink thousand dollar wines. Oh yes, this must be saved! The reality is, policies every day are written not for the betterment of the people but specifically for the rich, and psychologists are hired to meticulously craft products and advertisements which brainwash people effectively. It is a massively tangled ball of yarn, and that is what you get with this form of capitalism. Not capitalism in general, for American capitalism is its own breed. There are no rules. Corporations make the rules, and if you disagree... you can join the largest prison population in the world... that's where they will hold you, or you will end up on the streets, maybe to die in a gutter. Who cares? Very few, especially not the rich.

I've read the Ellsberg book Chomsky references at 1:46 and I highly recommend it. Also, the book by Scott Atran he refers to earlier is called Talking to the Enemy, also an amazing book, Atran went into places like Lebanon and the West Bank and talked to potential terrorists and the communities that support them and what he found was (as Chomsky alluded to) they were primarily motivated not by religion but by the same things that would motivate anyone: that their friends and loved ones had been murdered, maimed, and tortured by the US and US puppet forces. Another excellent book along the same lines is Dying to Win: The Logic of Suicide Terrorism by Robert Pape from the University of Chicago, very scholarly and dispassionate statistical analysis of terrorism and its causes. Interestingly, Pape's work was primarily supported by the DOD under Bush and Rumsfeld. I wonder what they thought of his results. Although, that's really not all that unusual, the DOD and the CIA often have a good understanding of what is really going on, it's just that those kinds of analysis (e.g., the Pentagon Papers) are meant for internal use not for the general public.

The thing that impresses me the most about Chomsky (and there are many things on that list) is his lack of cynicism. He never seems to despair of people. Even when talking of these same dreary old establishment stances against student protests (and we’re seeing it again right now actually) happen again and again and people still fall for it, he doesn’t get cynical and blame people. Most of us can’t do that. By the time we’re 30 we’ve decided the average person is pond life and just give up on politics. It’s a tremendous quality in a person to never really ‘get old’ in this way.

Bolsonaro is not a good president or even a good person but compared to Lula's corruption history he's still lagging behind a bit (though he might be able to reach him if he keeps on the way he's going). And that talk about the elite not liking Lula because he wasn't too well educated oh gimme a break please. This is really sad to hear from someone like Chomsky. He talks as if the elite was just this single group of people with the same way of thinking and no disagreement whatsoever. The elite loved Lula, or at least the part of the elite he favored during his mandate. There's a simple, primal rule here in our country: Don't ever idolize politicians.

also this interview is a gem. ive been trying to pace the incidences of my mindblownness, and its become increasingly hard for things to mindblow me that are not just pure academic lengthly research and "liturgy" (I wish i could understand turing's computational incompleteness paper but one go was definitely not enough.)...the pure candence that mr. chomsky speaks shows his confidence from his younger days, but also the depth and tidiness of his research (for example him reading airplane bombing records). and always have in mind the masses as well...
1:58:35 It's quite shocking that they're slashing funding to the sciences, historically there's never been a greater ally to facist/crypto-facist military regimes than the sciences.

Yolo Swaggins well now there’s a lot to dissect there. The Nazis loved SOME science. Other sciences, psychology and Nuclear science were dubbed “Jewish science”. Fascists only like technology so far as it advances their power, and sciences that they don’t like are cut and suppressed. Fascism is also inherently anti intellectual, Eco’s Ur-Fascism outlines this better than I can.

Chomsky is the most important thinker of the 20th century and the first 20 years of the 21st. He is growing old but his mind is still sharper than most people in their 20s. He's absolutely correct about almost every subject and has an encyclopedic brain. He introduced me to Socialism and Anarchy at a young age and has read almost everything he has written. He should be the president but he is a leader, not a politician. The two are almost mutually exclusive. When he passes I will be very sad and lost.

I share the same sentiments with you. Chomsky can only be preserved by sharing his thoughts and works with the rest of the population. It amazes me that this video has very few views in comparison to the nonsense that plagues KZbin.

It's fascinating how they talk about how much the world has changed in the three years since that they last spoke and yet they don't even know what's coming in 2020. Going to check back in here in 2022 as I suspect that the change is going to be monumental. Keep safe out there people.

If Chomsky doesn't have the disclaimer that he's an anarchist and doesn't believe the state should exist, he shouldn't be commenting on international politics through a moral lens. You can't use the same moral logic between people as you can between countries, arguing the universal standards countries should follow. Doing so endorses their existence, which is contradictory to the philosophy which got him to anarchy. Living in the US, I find it infinitely preferable for the US to be dominant militarily over Russia and any other country. There's no justification for Russia's attempt to place nuclear weapons in Cuba after the US put them near Russia's border because justifications are inherently moral statements. Russia's actions are understandable, sure, but that's not an indictment of the U.S. In a political reality, remaining neutral gives other countries an advantage over your own. Arguing against that is like reasoning with a burglar why they shouldn't rob you. When you allow statism, you throw morality out the window. You have to argue from the lens of international politics and understand that different countries benefit from their ideologies spreading and that it's permissible to combat their spread. Promoting your own country's ideology is less of an imposition and more of a defense mechanism. The way Chomsky speaks, you'd think that if the US stood down and became more peaceful, so would the rest of the world and we would all be better for it. I've heard too many good arguments to believe this isn't the case. Being an American, he should want American supremacy, just as any other country wants their own supremacy. The methods in order to increase peace are not necessarily to reduce American supremacy and those arguments, which all come through the same lens every time he speaks, are getting tired. He does not have a strategy for peace, but rather capitulation and hope.

Chomsky has an uncanny ability to look at the world objectively. An objective intellectual view is very unsettling to most people's subjective tribalistic view of the world. People accuse Chomsky of disloyalty for not being a blind follower not understanding that an objective view is important for looking out for ones best interests including that of their country.

@Will K - Politics/Culture One could easily argue that capitalism has killed many more people. Fascism and colonialism are capitalistic. The capitalistic early industrial revolution was responsible for working people to death. Chomsky points out the problems of all economic and political systems. I have attached a video that most socialists or communists would accuse him of attacking them. Chomsky may save capitalism from its' excesses. People's subjective bond to their ideology causes people to defend critical views which can be used for improvement. All economic systems operate within a political system. The present US trend of the last 40 years of increasing militarism and increasing power to wealthy people and their corporations will result in a backlash that could greatly damage the present system in the US IF it isn't curtailed before it is too late. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpzdqpqbr7hgetE

Let's remember that Chomsky only APPEARS to be, ' objective ', because he has the great luxury of Hindsight-Hindsight which those whom he criticizes did NOT have at the time!
@christopherhamilton3621 Жыл бұрын
@@mck1972They could have foreseen both outcomes & the moral implications though. He’s being objective all the same and not trying to change facts to fit a fake narrative. Plus he’s been consistent all the way through. Your ONLY rider is weak and dismissive: for shame.
@mck1972 Жыл бұрын
@christopherhamilton3621 LOL Unless you can show that Chomsky actually, ' foresaw ', anything himself-BEFORE it happened, then what you mistakenly call Chomsky's, ' objectivity ', and, ' consistency ', is in reality just his own worthless exploitation of 20/20 Hindsight about fields that he has never had the guts to actually work in himself-Which is everything outside Linguistics! And so it is You Yourself that is, ' weak ', and, ' shamed ', here, for not facing up to how my, ' narrative ', is 100% accurate! 😂😂😂

1:18:52 "1st Amendment does not protect Freedom of Speech - it prevents prior restraint [...] if I give a talk criticizing the government, 1st Amendment permits them to put me into jail, as long as they didn't stop me saying it in the first place." Could someone explain this to me please? I know nothing about constitutional law. On the Constitution Center website, it says: '"Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” it means that the government may not jail, fine, or impose civil liability on people or organizations based on what they say or write, except in exceptional circumstances' Chomsky is saying the government cannot stop you from saying something, but once you have said it they are able to arrest you for it. However, the Constitution Center website seems to contradict that. I'm likely misunderstanding either one or both of them, any clarifications are very welcome!
