My main issue with Jon Jones fight career, is he thought a lot when it suited him. As soon as he was established he barely fights and refuses the same opportunities he was afforded. Beating Gane and an old Stipe just isn’t as impressive as beating Francis and Aspinall in their prime

Tom aspinall lost to his first top ranked opponent. Blew out his knee in the first round. Then he beat a guy who was ranked #10. Then got an interim title shot cause Gane just fought a month prior and and the UFC wants Stipe vs Jones. He was a backup fighter not even ranked in the top5. Stipe has beaten Francis and also Beat Jons biggest rival twice. Please explain why Tom is a bigger legacy fight? Tom needs to fight Blaydes and avenge that loss or call out Gane.

The legacy of one Jon ‘Bones’ Jones is one of crashing his Bentley into a pregnant woman’s car at an intersection and busting her up, running away on foot from the crash, then seconds later running back to the Bentley to retrieve drugs & a handgun, only to run away again. Or perhaps Jones’ legacy is one of sparring in the cage at the gym, noticing a USADA official walking into the gym, and quickly diving headlong to hide under the cage until the USADA official left. Or perhaps Jones’ legacy is one of stumbling to explain ‘picograms’ to the public, or what transpired to bring the term to the public’s attention. Or perhaps Jones’s legacy is one of driving around ABQ while quite intoxicated and firing a handgun into the air while driving.

Jon should have come out of retirement and fought Francis as soon as Francis KO'd Stipe. He didn't. He sat out and let Francis fight Gane, feud with the UFC, finish his contract and exit. That mistake was on Jon because he was concerned about his size. Then he decides to come back and fight a 41-year-old Stipe who has sat out for coming up to four years and another man Francis stopped... inside two rounds. He looks like he is doing everything he can to discredit and avoid Tom because he literally sees a complete fighter with KO power and an incredible ground game. He is not taking Tom Down easily, keeping him down long and he certainly isn't KOing Tom or winning that long 25 min game. His actions are not that of a GOAT. I wish they were but they are not.

Great advice from Chael. And I understand where Tom is coming from, shit if I were him I would want that fight too, just the CHANCE to even maybe beat Jon jones is so much bigger than any belt. And I’m obviously in the camp that truly believes jon should fight Tom even if his hands were clean and he was going to make a clean exit. But if Jon never makes that public knowledge to the rest of his fans, then this narrative won’t stop even after he retires. At least for the short term, in the long run I don’t think it will matter at all, the internet has a short memory there’s no way they will remember that Tom was an interim champion at one point because Jon just so happened to get hurt.

Who says Jon had agreed to fight Pavlovich if Stipe pulled out though...? The UFC assigns the backup fighters it's not a guarantee they will get to compete for the undisputed title if something happens, there are multiple examples of this and also multiple times that Jon had spoken of how methodical he is in his fight preparations and has spoken on not taking short notice fights
@Cr0wsMurd3r

Essentially Stipe created the problem we now have by not fighting Sergei "Colossus" Pavlovich, even though he had agreed to due to Sergei being the backup fighter. I thought Tom had the potential to be THE guy at heavyweight from the first time I saw him fight in the UFC, and now he is that guy. Sure, he lost to Blaydes... but Blaydes did not "beat" him in any way. So Tom is the guy, and the most compelling fight to make right now is Jon v Tom... or Tom v Stipe. Had it been any other guys than Jones and Stipe the UFC would have "made em" fight Tom since he is the legit number one guy is the division.

As a big Jones fan, the Aspinall fight is the first time I’ve really been worried. He’s younger, quicker and bigger. As a Jones fan, I wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t fight Tom. He’s older and it would be an unnecessary risk to his legacy. But as a MMA fan, I’d sure be disappointed. Honestly, lately Jon appears more fragile than dominant. He makes it look like he just wants to get away with the Stipe fight and be done, but he could have said nothing, beaten Stipe, said “I don’t want to do this anymore” and he’d look like the greatest. Purely in image, all this legacy talk and back and forth with a guy that he isn’t intending to fight in Tom, it’s just not a good look to go on for this long regardless of whether he’s right or wrong

I have to disagree a bit with Charl's assessment. If Aspinall beat Stipe or even Francis then we could say Aspinall was the "greatest" currently and Jones was ducking him. Besides, Jones and Stipe has been anticipated for awhile now. The idea that Jones is afraid or running from Aspinall is silly. Jones legacy will be the best whether he fights Aspinall or even retires today.

People want to talk about how Jon Jones has the better resume than Tom Aspinall, but none of that matters. Tom won the interim title and should be next in line to face the champ to unify the belts, otherwise, what the hell was the point in having an interim title fight? Either Jon faces Tom or he should be stripped of the title and I would feel the same if Tom refused to fight Jon for whatever reason. If Jon Jones wants to fight Stipe, I don't care, but he can do it without holding a belt. Dana holding up the division for Jon Jones and Stipe is ridiculous, especially when both guys are most likely to retire after the fight win or lose. If you want to argue, Tom has been more ranked guys at HW than Jon has, what Jon Jones did at LHW was great, but HW is a whole different beast.

People seem to sleep on the fact that Stipe has the most HW defences in UFC and really was messed around by not getting an instant rematch with Francis. If you compare both Tom and Stipe's record and think what makes more sense for legacy. Im sure it has to be Stipe. If only Jon could fight both.

imagine a parallel universe where khabib comes back tomorrow, but he decides to fight at WW leon decides that's a bad match up and announces he's going up to MW to fight strickland. gets injured, vacates the belt as hes staying at MW. khabib wins the vacant WW belt vs usman via first round KO. lines up 'big money/legacy' fight vs conor (who just beat by first round KO vs chandler and then first round sub vs nate diaz) as no.1 contender shavkat was booked khabib gets injured a week out from the fight so they cancel the fight, leon decides to come back to fight shavkat who starches him in the 1st khabib comes back, and while shavkat is interim, decides to fight conor for the WW belt. sounds almost ridiculous doesn't it?

It's so clear that Jones does not want to fight Tom. He wants his legacy fight after holding up the division then walk away into the sunset.
