I just voted yesterday in south New Jersey. I got there15 minutes early and there were about 80 people in line already, but the line went fast. The crowd was pleasant/orderly. I got out of there in about 45 minutes. It was well organized/efficient and the computer voting process was easy to comprehend/complete. I also thanked the helpful staff. Yesterday, I remembered that I watched Kamala make a speech *14 years ago* when she was DA of San Francisco, so I looked it up and rewatched it. She was keynote speaker for the Berkeley Women in Leadership Conference in 2010. It's a long speech, but if you really want to know who Kamala is and what she brings to her "black job" it is certainly worth watching. The only difference I see in her compared to 14 years ago, is that she's aged a little. She had a delightful sense of humor and warm sincere laughter back then too. I've been a Kamala fan for @ 20 years, and as a Californian I've seen her speak on the news, and because I love PBS, I watched this speech in 2010 and told my husband that day, "I think we are looking at the next Governor of California... I hope!" Well, I got that wrong, but I guess I'll just have to settle for calling her *Madame President of These United States of America!* So, how about we get to work on being UNITED again? I want a president who works for every American citizen, not just the racist ones who vote for a fool. I don't blame the roast comic for doing his job. But the thing that made it so much more ominous and unpalatable was the fact that it was the introductory opening act of a political rally that spoke those same words without a hint of irony, sarcasm, or mirth from the speakers that followed. Hinchcliffe may not hold the belief in what he said (even though he is a willing surrogate for the Trump campaign efforts), but the people who heard his roasts and watched his stand-up specials forgot that they were supposed to avoid blurring the lines between derogatory comedy and actual national policy. We've watched and listened for years now, as Trump supporters have lined up behind every public statement Trump has made pertaining to race, gender, culture and class, and we were told to never take him seriously, that it was always being said in a joking way, that his blatant misogyny and homophobia and racism were just him being a cheeky scamp that didn't really mean the exact words that he has reiterated multiple times to different audiences for the last five decades. As Kellyann Conway frames it, we shouldn't listen to the words he says, we should inherently know what's in his heart. Well, I think that thin veil finally collapsed at MSG, because you could actually hear the same rhetoric being told "in jest" alongside the surrogates and presidential candidate who genuinely believe and repeatedly say those thing aloud, being pronounced from that podium for hours. They've hid behind the convenient cover of online trolling for years, and have been working toward this merger between extremist ideology and public policy for years now. They are so close to seeing that vision realized, and I wonder if there's enough Americans who watched this and were repulsed by it. My grandparents would be horrified by this all-too-familiar scene that they bore witness to in the 1930s, being played out again in the 21st century. They rejected it then, and we must reject it now.
