I had a close friend in Sweden who shared insights about your systems and values. From what I learned, I was truly moved by the humanity embedded in your policies-a striking contrast to what we have here. I’ve spent time in a few European countries and always admired how they prioritize people’s well-being, which feels like something we’ve lost or never had. Now, with Trump and a Republican sweep, we’re veering so far from empathy and progress that it’s hard to comprehend. I genuinely wonder what Europe thinks right now. I hope both your politicians and citizens make their criticisms clear. There’s a strange notion here among MAGA that the rest of the world respects Trump, not Biden or Harris; they believe only Trump’s return could restore America’s image globally. But it seems obvious to the rest of us of us that it is the opposite and that this path damages our relationships and erodes the global respect we’ve worked for. I can only hope Europe and other allies speak out, speak loud & hold us accountable because we’re at a point where international voices might be the only ones strong enough to challenge the direction we’re heading.

Flawless? I think saying Biden "got rid of neoliberalism" is an extremely terrible flaw, because as he promised his wealthy donors before the election of 2020, "nothing would fundamentally change" for them, their standard of living would never change. That is the very epitome of neoliberalism. And while he gave us some scraps that resembled FDR (because of Bernie Sanders' influence - another fact left out of Heather's status quo rhetoric), nothing fundamentally changed. And that is why we are in this sh*t show we're in right now. And nothing will ever change for the middle and working class if we keep praising people for lying about it.
@strawberrychaos732 ай бұрын
Flawless would be actually talking about how Biden adopted Bernie Sanders' working-class messages in the 2020 election, because the corporate Democrats saw that success. Flawless would not be lying about neoliberalism, which NEVER went away during Biden's presidency.
@strawberrychaos732 ай бұрын
Flawless would not be selective amnesia about Biden telling wealthy donors, "Don't worry, nothing will fundamentally change" for them. That their standard of living wouldn't change. That is the very epitome of neoliberalism: catering to the wealthy class, privatization, free trade. None of that changed.

Same reply I had for another person YEAH but she also starts with one of the GREATEST LIES BEING TOLD with saying how great the economy is. YES the economy is good for some and for some its insanely fantastic BUT for massive slab of the population ITS NOT GOOD ITS A DISASTER. When she says that 80% are on better wages WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN? Anyone can get a 10% pay rise but if prices go up by 20% then you're NOT better off your worse off. So saying 80% are getting higher wages is meaningless unless there's some detail on other things In 2022 Bernie Sanders had the Congressional Budget Office do a report on on family wealth. (its easy to find). If you just look at the first graph you can see how the Top 10% of America has done incredibly well and the Middle 40% have done Ok. HOWEVER the Bottom 50% have gone NOWHERE for the last 35+ years. This is part of the frustration Trump has tapped into. I'm Australian and our data is similar. I watch a British Economist named Gary Stevenson and he says the same is happened in Britain. this is what populists are tapping into across Europe and the rest of the developed World and economists keep harping on about how great the stock market is doing or how wages are up WHILE THEY IGNORE WHAT PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY EXPERIENCING. The remaining 2/3rds are disillusioned by elites and this manifests as anti-vaxxer, anti-big pharma. When it comes to the economy the Democrats failed at defending those in the administration like Lina Khan and painting the picture of how the working class mainly the trades were used to over stimulate the economy, real estate, and manipulate prices/rents. People need to be shown, with quality of life benefits, that slow and steady wins the race. Or, we'll just get more of the same, race to the bottom, with things like Opportunity Zones and tax cuts that may show short term gains for the working class but inevitably just work toward consolidation of wealth and power.

When compared to industrial areas that are diverse and smaller in the rim states and we see that democratic principles are not declining. Also the work of the republican party to push back on FDR adding a federal effort to the local challenges of their communities. It's all there in the history just how they wrest power from the people.

YEAH but she also starts with one of the GREATEST LIES BEING TOLD with saying how great the economy is. HOWEVER the Bottom 50% have gone *NOWHERE* for the last 35+ years. Sorry for yelling.

I'm 59, black, male, I think this subject was very well spoken on. But missed the point. Money in Politics have taken away our ability to pick our candidates!! Nobody on either side has done anything to correct this correctible issue. The Democrats don't know how to talk to its base. The Republicans don't care at all. Because Corporations pick the candidates and subject matter we fight on. And Crap falls downhill. Thats why Americans have been screwed over for so long. Take money out of Politics, make Tv and the Internet that serve PEOPLE, have time for real politicians during certain voting periods and it be free. Make things that are said suable like in The European Union if untrue. I'm independent and instead of having a two-year period and billions of Dollars spent on national elections. Set a legal limit for spending. Set up a selection process that all except the sitting President has to go through that if you do not get a percentage of the vote, you can no longer run for the Office. By August of that voting period we could be down to 2 or 3 viable candidates. I believe some states and cities of this county already do this and it should be nationalized. What was said today to breakdown this past election in itself is a problem. I'm old enough to remember a descent RETIREMENT PLAN. 401 k was an amendment to the plan now it is the Plan. There is no ETHICS to save. What are we going to do next? How do we use the same tools they used against us against them? I voted for Kamala Harris, didn't care for her at all. But knew she was the safer choice! Amy Klobucher for me was the Correct choice for the Democrats Vice President, another Blown choice. She would have covered almost every base and the Blue Wall!!! I understood this, why didn't her people get this? Classism in The Democratic party is real, People notice it and it's a turn off, for voters, that is the number one reason the races are close. People are PISSED and I hope during my lifetime a real revolution in thinking that is about the ***WE*** and not just about being upper class.

Every economic statistic proves that overall, employment, inflation down to 2%, energy self sufficiency, etc. The massive infrastructure bill is bringing good paying jobs to every section of the economy, most especially to red states because they have let things go to pot more than elsewhere. While I’ve been worried about the state of things/the world for awhile, I had hope that maybe our neighbours to the south would see the danger that Trump represented. I think that Canadians need to pay more attention to Canadian politics than they do(even as someone who has issues with him, the number of Canadians who blame Trudeau for things that are handled by the provincial governments is frustrating) if they don’t want to be led down a similar path. While I have a hard time finding any bright side to events this week, the recent election down south may have one unexpected side effect for Canadian voters. If the Trump government is even half the train wreck a lot of people expect it to be, it may just scare Canadians from wanting to risk the same here(after all, few Canadians want to give up their belief of “at least we’re not as bad as the US”). It might be one of the few positives if you can call it that(and there aren’t many) to what’s happening there. I still would have preferred the alternative, but gotta work with what we’re given.

@galcast7699 The way I had been describing it to people is a fundamental difference in what’s deemed important. For instance, Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be a key element of the justice system, but many don’t grasp why. I’ll ask people which they’d prefer or dislike more…Would they be more angry if for every 20 people going to jail, 1 was innocent of any crime, or for every 20 criminals, 1 was able to escape any punishment and get away with their crime? The truth is for many people the idea of a guilty person getting off Scot free enrages them far more. And while you can try to argue “what if you were that innocent person?”, when you’re targeting groups like immigrants or minorities that you aren’t a part of, it becomes even easier to ignore any empathy when they feel relatively certain that they wouldn’t/couldn’t be that innocent person themselves. They’ll gladly offer up that innocent homeless person as a modern human sacrifice if it means getting every last criminal and thus feeling safer. I’m not sure how you counter against that.

Boy it was nice those corporations weren't greedy under Trump and mortgage rate 3%. Holy smokes income inequality decreased under Trump but that would require getting real facts. How about those gov institutions like FEMA not helping Trump supporters. These ppl are liars.

Heather, you're a great global/systems/big-picture thinker, able to view the broad implications of decisions and actions on a national scale. Many of us admire you for sharing your knowledge and putting it all into perspective. More could benefit from hearing you speak; thank you Jon Stewart for this discussion.
