This song came up on my Spotify earlier this year and my brain wouldn't let me stop imagining the singer as Garfield singing to his beloved Jon Arbuckle. Most of the time it seems like Garfield is pretty apathetic towards Jon, but I think deep down he'd be broken without his sad human companion. I'm no Garfield buff though, so I don't really know, haha.
This animation took me longer than expected, it started as a little side thing I was working on while working on the Streetpass video and like usual I found myself putting a lot of time and effort into it. I really wanted to play around with compositing with this, so I went for a 90's VHS look, I think I was successful??

no one is talking about it so i feel the need to say this from one artist to another, not only do you have a genuinely pleasant and fantastic art style, you're clearly extremely skillful in both drawing and coloring/shading, and your animation skills are top quality. personally the melodramatic animation and silly vocal performance coupled with the genuine heartbreak of the melody and chords really hit me hard. People so often treat their heavy feelings as a joke to cope and fit in. For me the "oh" at 0:42 is almost a 4th wall-breaking look of surprise that real emotions slipped out in this silly animation.

I love the idea that Garfield legitimately felt like he was losing his place in the family when Jon and Liz started dating. That's why he reveled so much in the "we're BACHELORS, baby" punchline. Because being a bachelor with Jon was nice and cozy and it was just the two of them always. He didn't want it to be ruined.

Maybe it's also because he feels territorial over it, Jon's girlfriend, just going in his house and stealing his time with his owner? In his perspective, I'd also feel bummed out over it. This is so much sadder when you remember that in one of Garfield’s nine lives, he had to be separated from his owner for a while because she found a love interest, so they couldn’t see each other for a really long time. Poor garf is probably reliving that experience

There was a week long story arc in the comic strip where garfield suddenly gets transported to an old abandoned version of the house. No one but him is there, and he gradually grows neurotic and delusional, seeing illusions of Jon and Odie. He finally admits that he's afraid to be alone, and everything suddenly returns to normal. It may have been his imagination, may have not, but it shows Garfield has a fear of loneliness and can't handle being by himself and forgotten.

I had an orange cat. Many people said that our dynamic reminded them of Jon and Garfield. I loved him more than the waking world. I had him as my iPhone wallpaper, he took up my memory on my phone as well with how many photos I had of him; I never used to take photos before I adopted him. This made me think about how he likely felt when seeing me leave the apartment. It made me so happy to see how excited he was to just see me come home, or wake up in the morning. I don’t think that’s something we in every day life get to experience with other people, them being ecstatic about us merely existing. It means the world to us when we see someone or something express how we mean the world to them. That’s beautiful. Maybe we should all be more like our pets and just show people how much they brighten up our worlds, by just simply being in it.

I lost my dogs a little while ago and it hurts... a lot. I don't think I'll ever stop missing them and just the thought that I'll never see their stupid drooly faces again makes my throat hurt. And I will never forget the looks on their faces when I would come home from school or college. One of them, Brutus, would lay on the window sill every day just before I got home and watch out front of the house for me to arrive - this was quite impressive considering he was a fat bastard of a bulldog haha. I regret a lot from when they were still here and I wish I could have done better for them, but reading this helped me remember that me just coming home and playing with them every day was enough for them and they loved me despite everything. i’m not even sure why i’m so sad but god this is gut wrenching for some reason. the use of garfield specifically almost makes it feel like a metaphor for loss of childhood innocence to uncaring adults, or more specifically, the feeling of abandonment or betrayal by a trusted adult. it evokes that feeling to me of being a child and dealing with emotions you can’t put to words or just don’t understand, and feeling so deeply angry and betrayed by those with power over you and/or those you love. being forced at a young age to consider wether the people you hold dearest to you, particularly parents, actually have your best interests at heart, feeling like you might start having to protect yourself from the people you thought were there to protect you, and the utter overwhelming loneliness and feeling of powerlessness that comes with that. begging to understand, but not being able to. the attempts to self-comfort and eventual apathy towards those you used to love so much. searching for an escape. crying out for help. feeling like your entire world is being torn apart and the only thing you can do is stand there, in the doorway, in the dim light, and watch it all happen. the adults are talking, and they’re talking about you, and you’re not allowed to say a word. all you can do is press your ear to the door, and listen. or maybe it’s funni animation about funni lagsangagsa cat singing funni song heehoo

For Garfield, his day to day schedule never changes. He has no responsibilities whatsoever. So there’s no feasible reason he would hate Mondays for his own sake. Monday starts just after the weekend, which means after two days of Jon being around constantly he’s suddenly gone off for work presumably. Garfield doesn’t hate Mondays because he just doesn’t like Monday. He hates Mondays because he loves Jon and just doesn’t want to admit it

I was very close to have a panic attack when I found this animation. The beautiful song mixed with the expressive animation made me feel heard for a moment. I love how Garfield is being such a melodramatic sassy feline right now. So in his feelings. This is kinda in line with some of his behavior when he’s not pretending he doesn’t give a shit. On top of that he doesn’t turn into this primordial being. It’s just very comforting, realistic, VHS filter and actually some good multimedia seeming animation.

LOVE the way u draw garfield. so very cute and so very sad. beautifully animated and the aesthetic fits the song perfectly. so cool how you actually had varying levels of cartoonish-ness (bigger hands, shorter arms, bigger eyes, etc.) for him in different scenes so that he fit the feeling better, without breaking the cohesion of the animation. super impressive. keep it up!

I interpreted this as Garfield having separation anxiety. Pets can recognize our routines when we get ready to leave the house, and start to act anxious, or cry out. Poor kitty Garfield 😔
