All my life I have relied on Jon Anderson and Justin Hayward to restoreth my soul, laying beside the still waters of their beautiful souls as painted in music. Jon's solo works and collaborations with Kitaro et al, along with the bulk of Moody Blues and Blue Jays music will keep you in good stead for many months, years, decades. The songs are like medicine. Feeling stressed? Moving too fast? Take one "Take Your Time" and call me in the morning. Jon's is a healing, pure voice of sweetness and light. Two qualities in short supply today. For me, Jon's voice is perhaps most beautiful in a section in Friends of Mr. Cairo, where he sings: "One on one to talk to you Like film stars they get close to you You've mirrored his appeal He wants you so, he wants to be beside you Then you pass by, giving him the other side of you Like the mystics do So that every time he moves, he moves for you."

I'd consider this one of the most influential songs of my life. Some people love it and others just don't get it, and that's ok. To me it's one of the most epic progressive tracks ever made. For technical details, the bulk of the synth sounds were made with a Yamaha CS-80, which featured polyphonic aftertouch, voice layering, and a long pitch bend ribbon, on an analog synth...very much ahead of its time and very rare & expensive. Today you can get an emulator, either in software form, or hardware rack-module (sans keyboard) called the Deckard's Dream. This was his "signature" synth that defined the Vangelis sound. The piano section, I believe, was played on a Yamaha CP-80 electro-acoustic piano. To my ears, the electro-acoustic piano (including Rhodes and Yamaha) is where you can hear Vangelis at his most intimate and expressive playing in all of his albums. He pulls every last ounce of dynamic range out of them and weaves deceptively simple-sounding melodies with complex phrase variations and subtlety that often breaks from the patterns your mind is expecting to hear next. The result is stimulating, and a little challenging, but still pleasing. I believe at the time they were using tape reels for doing multiple tracks, though Vangelis was adept at a managing multiple keyboards and sequencers at once. Vangelis was known to use an early Lexicon digital reverb. Jon Anderson was at his peak, double-tracking and harmonizing on many of the vocals. He also used a Vocoder (often used or misused by other musicians as a funky novelty effect) in what I'd consider the most subtle and successful way of all time. Jon's lyrics are a new-age stream of consciousness (as always) but I always found Horizon and other tracks on this album to be more profound and transcendental than many of his other songs. Horizon an unforgettable experience of a track, a masterpiece.

You are correct. A Lexicon 224 Reverb unit was used and also a Roland Dimension D SDD-320 chorus unit was used which give the Yamaha CP-80 in this production such a full, dreamy sound. I'm almost certain Vangelis used an Oberheim DMX for the drums on this song, but I could be wrong.

Jon and Vangelis was truly one of those collaborations made in heaven and sent to Earth - never tire of listening to the combination of Jon's pure vocals blending and soaring with Vangelis's music. Simply epic. Love it 🎼💖😎 Agree that bits of this sound like continuations of Blade Runner, which is probably my favourite film of all time, partly because of what Vangelis did with the soundtrack - another match made in heaven! RIP to the maestro 😢

Hi Nick, I still remember being at home with my mum & dad in 1981, and the British weekly pop programme "Top of the Pop's" came on....and the DJ announced a new entry in the singles charts > It's Jon & Vangelis with " I'll Find My Way Home ". I was stunned....What ? That's the lead singer of Yes ! What is he doing on Top of the Pop's ? !! .... & Vangelis ? I have his solo albums. Wow !!! and the track just blew me away. It is so beautiful....Then I remembered on one of Vangelis solo albums "Heaven & Hell" The very last track has Jon Anderson on singing "So Long Ago So Clear" which is a song that breaks my heart still. My Mum In Law to be, dedicated it to her daughter and me, after our relationship ended, but we stayed friends....Living miles apart. It just wasn't to be. [ I never married ] The song says it all. Nick, I cannot express how much I admire your emotional honesty and willingness to be vulnerable. Thank you so much for this reaction. I own a copy of every LP by Jon and Vangelis, and I treasure them immensely. Jon's angelic voice pairs perfectly with Vangelis's heavenly compositions. His achingly beautiful melodies and key modulations, combined with his tasteful use of musical dynamics, are expressions of a subtle and beautiful soul.

Wow Nick, Jon and Vangelis's beautiful music got you meditating on life there! Well I will be turning 70 next year, so I'm definitely in the '70 is not old' camp! My mom made it to 96 so I reckon I have good genes. What a pleasure to listen to this music. 'I Hear You Now' is one of my all time favourite songs. While we're talking about Jon Anderson, I have noticed often in the comments that you should react to Jon's first solo album 'Olias Of Sunhillow'. I'm sure the whole 'Yes Army' here would come out in full support if you did so. It is up there with Chris Squire's 'Fish Out Of Water' as the best solo albums from all the band members, and all the more remarkable for the fact that he played all the instruments himself. It has to be played in one sitting though, as it's a concept album that flows wonderfully. So it's a 40 minute reaction, but an absolute experience. Thanks again Nick, a great reaction.
@goytabr
@goytabr Жыл бұрын
I'll never understand the lyrics of "Olias", like "as old stands to plunder expectant as one dear companion can utter the right we achieve" (it's so weird that I don't even know where to punctuate it!), but I don't care. I dive into it as a long mantra, and the music is FABULOUS! Definitely a must-listen!

Vangelis passing was a great loss to the world. I have been listening to him for literally four decades! First discovered him when the Jon & Vangelis album _The Friends of Mr. Cairo_ was released in 1981. I already knew Jon Anderson from Yes but was not aware of Vangelis. But I liked his music so much from that one album that I was anxious to see what else he had. Soon enough, I had purchased every solo album of Vangelis I could find and was completely enamoured. As for _Blade Runner_ it is also one of my all time favorite movies and I think a true dystopian sci-fi classic. And Vangelis music is just as integral to the plot and feel of the movie as the 300 story buildings and floating neon billboard ads. The film is a real feast for the eyes and ears. I loved your review, Nick. I'm glad to see somebody else who truly feels music as deeply as I do. 🙏

Once I got into Vangelis, I’ve not been able to stop. I have a lot of music collected, but Vangelis is far and away the biggest portion. The Blade Runner soundtrack, and all its many bootleg varieties, makes a playlist many hours long on its own. The “29th Anniversary” bootleg is about 5 hours, virtually everything made for the movie. Vangelis’ recent passing is still hard to handle.

The keyboard Vangelis is associated with was the Yamaha CS-80. There are videos on YT of him being interviewed where he demos how he wrote music with it. Vangelis learned how to improvise early on, not in the usual sense as a soloist, but as a composer. It's part of the electronic music tradition that he helped to spearhead. His intuitive sense for melodic development and composition were staggering. Anyways, if you like this check out all four J&V albums.

We called This music "Heavenly or Angelic music" in the 70's or 80's.....because of the Choir type of style of music we grew up listening to and singing in Cathedrals and Churches. Music critics called this style, "Art music." I use to put this album on repeat and it would stay on for a couple of weeks. Great music for my clients in my spiritual sessions.

Hi Nick. If you're truly new to electronic music, I would like to introduce you to Jean Michel Jarre, a contemporary of Vangelis also starting in the '70s. I would suggest starting with his album Oxygène. His tracks run into each other, so it is best listening to the album by full sides. Side one consists of Oxygène I, II, and III, and is about 18 and a half minutes long in duration. I think that could easily be done. I've only seen one reactor do a full album reaction to Oxygène so far, JustJP. His side 1 reaction had 12K views in about a week, I think, which is a pretty good showing on his channel. And as far as I can tell, JustJP had no issues with blocking on that album, even though he muted his microphone and played each side all of the way through without pausing in two videos. #nicknlexrequest *edit* I'm also going to suggest a movie for you and Alexia to watch called Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out of Balance). It is a movie completely without dialogue which depicts various societies around the world. But the soundtrack is written by Phillip Glass, and is breathtaking.

Did you know Jon Anderson asked vangelis to join yes when wakeman left. Didn’t work out. You can find the story about told by Jon on KZbin . It is a funny story

Jon Anderson's voice fascinated me already with the age of 15, when I first listened to Yes, with 15,5 I had the opportunity to see YES and Jon live !! And Vangelis, I know since the times with Aphrodite's Child (Rain and tears i.e.) So a unique cooperation and duo.

I think I gave up on Jon & Vangelis after their first 2 albums just because I found their material so hit and miss, so it's possible I never heard this. At some point in the middle it got a little schmaltzy for me, but that was just a first impression, and it has potential to grow on me a lot - I loved it for a long while before that part, so very promising!

@@innosanto I hear you, but if it doesn't grab me right away or looks like it has tons of potential, it could be years before a circle around back to it, if ever.

Not for reaction but for your enjoinment: Try the Blase Runner 25th anniversry boxset. It contains the whole work featuring also his former bandmate Demis Russous. You can't not react to Four Horsemen, from the album 666 (1971) by Vangelis previous band Aphrodite's Child.

It is interesting though being a huge YES fan I much prefer listening to the progressive rock sound with Jon’s vocals.

#nicknlexrequest May I suggest The Enid "In the Region of the Summer Stars" from the 1976 album of the same name. Very few people (about one I think) react to this band who perform mainly instrumental pieces. Album version best but there are many live versions (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJKXap9piZp_i9E). I think you will enjoy.

Hey, legit question, and if this isn't the right forum for it, let me know and I can erase it, but I thought the original intention of the solo Nick reactions was to do intense metal that Lexi wouldn't be interested in anyway, but it seems to have expanded to any kind of reaction. Is that designed pretty much entirely to limit Lexi's time because of back issues? Just saying that I miss seeing her as much. As for Jon & Vangelis, I always thought they were more miss than hit together, but they had some great moments. It was a pretty unusual pairing form the outset.

No worries! It did start that way but was only like that for a short time since Nick felt it was a bit limited and hard on his ears as well 🤫😂 The main intention is that of saving my back time, but also helps find more music and opportunities of videos together!! 💕 Thanks for missing me!
