Just like all of Jon's songs, there is more to it than on the surface. Yes it is a nostalgic song about Hollywood's Golden Age, but it is more than that, it is a metaphor for something much more magical and deep than just movies, an idea about the human spirit as to why we create such wonders, and where the imaginative wellspring comes from that could conjure up such things. Vangelis mysterious melody that weaves in and out, the "Arabian Nights theme" has these hints of darkness and otherworldlyness that really offset the lighter and brighter parts of the epic musical journey, and are what you really remember.

I’ve loved Jon and Vangelis since their early collaborations. I was a great fan of Vangelis in, i believe , 1975 when Heaven and Hell came out and a great fan of Jon’s in his early Yes days. Their joint albums were ‘heaven sent’ for me as a teenager and this album was a highlight. The movie nostalgia along with the beauty of the music hit me very hard at an unhappy time in my life when I needed a spiritual uplift. It will always be a very special album for me, thank you for covering it.

Some trivia- Vangelis tied out for Keyboard for Yes when Wakeman was taking leave- that is where they first met. Also two of my favorite soundtracks are "Chariots of Fire" and the "The Bounty"- both are different but yet Vangelis. As Nick had noted in the video, Hans Zimmer work on BR 2049 was inspired by the original soundtrack score- what is different though, the original BR has many other styles of music other than just the lush synths soundscapes- there are other ethnic motifs in different scenes in the Middle Eastern district in the city (for example), and the love scene music is my favorite along with the opening music of the cityscape. I feel Vangelis created music soundtracks as other character and really revolutionized electronic music as a main principle in score- well along with Jerry Goldsmith- a story for another time :)

@@cozmicpfunk _ thanks for all that info John, in a way I was always glad that Vangelis didn’t end up in Yes because I feel that he would have been at odds with the other members of the band (as fine musicians as they were). I feel this because he was a very individual musician who didn’t need to be part of a group to be at his best. I believe he never learned how to read and write music which always floors me. I realise he ‘cut his teeth’ in Aphrodites Child’ and was a driving force in that band but eventually needed to branch out and explore his potential as a solo artist. I have some of his early albums and soundtracks such as ‘Etand tu le Chien Aboyer’ and some bootleg stuff like ‘the Dragon’ which are great for discovering his early experimentation in the genre. At this time I was very into bands such as Tangerine Dream, seeing them live on several occasions in the seventies and eighties, and of course ‘Kraftwerk’, another pioneering band in electronic music. Vangelis’ Heaven and Hell was a big influence to me growing up in 1970’s England. His follow up album ‘Albedo 0.39’ is one of my favourite albums of all time and, in my opinion, criminally overlooked. I remember dashing to the shops when ‘Spiral’ was released and been ‘blown away’ by the album but by the same token, buying ‘Beauborg’ and wondering where he was going with his Odyssey. Anyway, this has turned out to be a boring ramble so please forgive my self indulgence but he was such an influence on my life that I can’t stop jabbering about it. RIP Vangelis.

My favourite J&V album is 'Short Stories' featuring 'I Hear You Now' and 'Play Within A Play'. Two great tracks! Oh and Nick, that flickering sound wasn't a fan, it was the movie projector running out of film! The youngsters of today!!! Only joking! Great video Nick.

I remember sitting in a car in a forest in Bavaria one night with a friend when I was 18yo. We were both high as kites and tried to find something we liked on the radio when we landed on a station that played that song. During the fade-out we hear the screeching that a needle makes when you scratch it over the vinyl - and the song started again. That happened about ten times. I surmised that we had found the pirate radio station of a fellow stoner.

When I was 19 I shared my first apartment in Downtown Montreal, starting in early 1984. I lived a few blocks from one of the city's largest movie theaters, the Seville Movie Festival. Two thousand seats, including the balcony. Every evening, instead of the Canadian National Anthem (this being separatist Quebec), the Seville repertoire cinema opened its doors and played the CD (new technology at the time) of the album of "The Friends of Mr. Cairo". The title track is an eleven minute love song to old movies, as you have now learned. It transitions from exciting to gloriously gorgeous, telling its story, like the Golden Oldies that it celebrates. The management played the CD at barely audible volume, so that the songs gently entered our subconscious, as we waited for the first movie of the evening to begin. Hearing this song still brings me back to my seat in the Seville Theater, reading or chatting with friends, waiting and loving life. It didn't take much money to have a good, fun life back then, in my amazing Montreal of the mid-Eighties. Ca me manque. I miss it all.

Hi Nick, this is such a great album. I was already into Vangelis solo work after "Aphrodites Child" which was the prog group in Greece he was in before going solo. The lead singer was the one & only Demis Roussos who also had great chart success with his solo albums. Vangelis 1st album available outside Greece was "Heaven & Hell" and the last track has Jon Anderson on vocals on "So Long So Clear"... After many solo albums and as Jon was with Yes, Vangelis eventually teamed up with Jon again, but this time for an entire album. It was such a success they continued together. Brilliant for us ! Great you played this albums main track. You will love the rest and his follow up album "Short Stories" Wonderful stuff. Byee Jim X

As others have said, from the same Friends of Mr Cairo album the song ‘State if Independence’ is a good listen, as are so many of their songs. It was however very strange to hear Donna Summer singing it a few years later. If I can just say, I love the channel as you have played so many of the tracks and artists and groups I grew up with. I remember spending lots of my after school job cash on LP’s and listening to them on an old mono record player, not getting the full benefit of stereo for a few years. I enjoy that you have on occasion followed the route I took in discovering new music. As an example, I loved and still love Genesis. That led me onto solo albums from Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. I got into Brand x through Phil Collins of course. I would read the album covers word for word and if I liked a session drummer or bass player I would check them out too like Chester Thomson who also played with Weather Report or Tony Levin who played for and still plays with Peter Gabriel. He is of course is also the bass player with King Crimson. The links would go on and on. I do not think you have played it YET but I hope one day to hear you review Fanfare For the Common Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer. The album version which also has a video shot during a frozen winters day in an empty Montreal Olympic Stadium. Epic. Best wishes from Scotland, Ian M

The very best of the videos - no other video comes close. Everything comes together, and you can directly relate to every part of the song as it is all a cinematic experience. The bit at the very start is simply someone's effort to claim the whole thing as if it was all his work. This has been my favourite record since it came out in 1981 - both album and track. It's so worthwhile to listen to the whole album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNmYqYr9SAj8k

Dear NicknLex. I would still strongly suggest that you watch the video that matches the whole song. These video clips perfectly match the epic song. The lyrics were all written by Jon Anderson, and the original creator of the video has gone to extraordinary lengths to match the soundtrack to what you see onscreen. The whole thing was uploaded in two parts before Google bought KZbin. Back in those days there was a time-constraint on KZbin of ten minutes per upload. The bit in the middle with the impersonation of James Stewart was missed out, drawing a remark from the video creator of "pretty kind of useless don't you think?". There are still examples of this practice dotted around. If you were to upload a reaction to the above video link, I for one would definately watch it.

Just something a little different they did for fun with a movie theme - chosen for its uniqueness, not its difficulty. The thing about the song "State of Independence" that people are mentioning, is that Quincy Jones produced the Donna Summers cover. If you take the repetitive synth pattern and slow it down, you get the bass line to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", also produced by Quincy Jones.

Jon is a great songwriter....which led to many arguments and disputes in the band Yes. their was a Theme that Jon was doing and Bill Bruford .....Steve Howe.....and Rick Wakeman didn't agree sometime.....so many of the main members left the band and did other things or projects....Jon left the band because the Record companies want to be commercial and Jon wanted to make Yes brand music....not popular trend music.....so he left the band....and Chris the other founder of Yes....recruited Alan White and Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes from the band Buggles to join the group and rwrite the music for the album, "Drama."....and I and millions of others left the group to....Didn't like Buggles...a new age ...punk.....new wave band......so....I really did not listen to YES at all.....and then Owner of The Lonely Heart video flashed in a video bar in San Diego CA......and I was thrilled that the group had caome back and updated themselves with a cathy danceable song...and YES this old band from the 60's and 70's was on the charts with a No. 1 song and album!!!! Meanwhile, I followed the careers of Chris and Jon and Steve on other projects....This album was one I heard!!! Great reaction!

Joel Cairo was played by Peter Lorre in The Maltese Falcon, which does not include a scene that sounds like the opening. However, he was a bit of a sleaze, so...

I think that The Friends of Mr Cairo is the weakest track of the album. Give a listen, not necessarily a reaction, to the whole

That's a contentious statement for some! But Hey, if a track doesn't grab you there's no arguing with that. For me, the weakest track is "Back to School". Somehow, Jon Anderson singing a blues based song just doesn't do it for me. Horses for courses, I guess, which is how baby horses come about.

@@gerardodoherty9178 I'm replying after oner year...I did forget Back To School, a so weak track that I have removed it from my memory. But leaving those two tracks apart, the rest of the album is great

Only a true film noir aficionado would know the movie through the Long night. I think it's Humphrey Bogart's best movie ever. And it all takes place in one location!

Mr Cairo was a character from the movie The Maltese falcon and he was played by Peter Lorre. You should look into your old film noir! Peace!
