More British soldiers died in WWI than in WWII. One of my paternal great-grandfathers was mustard gassed during WWI. He survived but had breathing difficulties until the day he died around 1971. Another great-grandfather of mine survived but had shrapnel. After WWI he went working on the railways and on one cold winter's day he was doing some work on a railway line when he slipped over on some ice. When he hit the ground the shrapnel moved in his body and it killed him.

I’m from the U.K.. I went travelling over continental Europe this summer and made great mates with a load of Germans who were great fun to drink and chat with. To think 80-100 years ago we would be forced by circumstance to kill each other in pointless wars for control of a tiny dot, makes me sick. We’re all in this confusing thing called life together with no real clue or idea what’s going on but while we’re on this earth we may as well make it easy as possible for others on it. I hope all around this world have a good Christmas and new year regardless of nation, religion, race or ethnicity and in our lives we overcome the challenges that we face. Each and every single human is the most complex thing in the known universe, behold and cherish that thought. At the risk of sounding incredibly pretentious I hope it will drive us all to appreciate one another for who we are and what we can become.

This song has been going around in my head for the past few weeks. Although I've heard it every year around Christmas since I was about 10 years old, I never actually knew what the title was. I just stumbled across it this evening while trawling through 70's and 80's christmas pop songs, and songs associated with the Christmas period; because I've been feeling the urge to binge 'Christmas Music lately'... I wonder why! (didn't even realize this song was about war). This one holds a special place in my heart because I grew up in a cult that forbade the celebration of Christmas (and other holidays) and all the other stuff that was connected to it, such as the music - but I 'secretly' loved this song. Still do. And now, for the last 10 years I've been free to indulge the holiday and the music.

Speaking as an ex-serviceman, who has to admit that I agree with Churchill; "jaw jaw is better then war war..." I used to hate the pacifists of the World, believing them to be naive and glib. with that said, the media is a very powerful tool and if it helps to make people think, even for a brief second, before they fire the first bullet, then I support it! This is one of the best "anti-war" songs ever. Simple, but profound at the same time! Excellent. Give us more, Jona! Happy Christmas everyone.

Churchill was a war monger. Hitler did not want a war with Britain. He sent those men across knowing full well the nazis would have no choice to attack. Churchill the warmonger

A real novelty here ..... This song is an excellent proposal which seems to be a protest against all forms of armed conflict, invasions, wars which are catastrophic events from every point of view, material, human but also psychological .... men who they often find in lands far from home, in drastic conditions .... wars that are often useless as peaceful solutions are scrapped by those in power. A man who calls for a quick resolution of conflict by calling " the cavalry " = those who are quick to put an end....a man who wishes he was home on Christmas, a man in the cold who dreams of peace and love... a man saying a prayer...and there are so many like him these days, let us join our prayers for him to come home. Thanks for putting it here, this is where it belongs.... 😊😊😊.
