Haha very nice find. My Les Paul Classic had the same problem. However i found a very easy fix after seeing your video. First remove the switch tip. Then wrap a bit of teflon tape on top of the switch screw, some of the tape will stick up beyond the screw. Then you can screw the switch screw back on, it won't go all the way down anymore but the teflon raises the switch tip just enough to avoid the problem. Thanks for the basic idea!

Thanks Jonah, for your video.. I'm totally new to guitars and I was having the same problem.. The switch was popping from both different ways, I used your method and it works fine now.. Thanks again.. 👌✌️👍

Anyone having this problem I can confirm 100% that it's the nut Gibson uses on their Switchcraft switches. They use a thicker long barrel nut, with a thick bezel around the toggle switch. I ordered a new Switchcraft Nut from Antique Electronic Supply and could immediately tell the difference. Once I swapped the nut the switch locked securely and worked perfectly.

Hi came across your Video about selector switch problem. Mine stays selected and fine. My problem is the clicking noise coming through the amp especially higher volumes. I was thinking microphonic pickups? Then you mentioned rubber washer on switch and makes sense ,so going to get some rubber washers and see if it will do the trick. Also the tip on lifting the tailpiece was interesting my tob E & B strings touch the back of the bridge. So glad I clicked on your Video. First class. Cheers

I have one that does that. It's on my hit list to fix it or replace it but I never get around to it somehow. So I'm going to go swap it right now for one that doesn't!! Mine's a 2020 Les Paul Standard 60's. So annoying they let this kind of bad quality out of the factory when it's so obvious.

Nice detective work Dane. I was going to suggest that the rout wasn't deep enough but that's already been covered in the comments and seems unlikely with CNC too, and too much lacquer is stretching the imagination as is variation in escutcheon plate thickness. Anyway, you said that the knurled ring nut didn't have any impact. Switch manufacturing tolerances then I guess because the switch cap is probably injection moulded. Really good video Sir.
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for having a look Steve. And I think you about covered it.
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
Turns out I have to reverse myself on the switch nut. It is what the tip was interfering with. But still the only way to change the relationship is to counter bore the switch cavity. NOPE
@KL3NCH3 жыл бұрын
@@jonahguitarguy So the tip (plastic?) is striking the knurled nut after all? A tiny object likd a really miniature nut bonded to the top of the toggle or lodged down at the bottom of the threaded hole in the switch tip will have the effect of raising the plastic tip. This is the same as removing more plastic from the bottom of the switch tip but doesn't remove any more material. I'd just fit a new (quality) switch and be done with it Dane.
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
@@KL3NCH if you put a spacer under the tip you would see it. If you put something in the tip to keep it from screwing all the way down you would see a gap. A new switch with longer threads would do the trick. But I’m happy with my fix.

I have many times fixed that switch throw problem by raising the switch a bit more, has always worked for me (to me it's better to adjust than it is to alter).
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
There is no such adjustment on this switch. Just a fixed pivot. I did think maybe the switch took a hit and it got pushed lower in but the only fix for that would be replacement. Could counter bore the inside of the cavity but that's quite invasive and time consuming. Desoldering the switch and all. Beside that the the tip was hitting the edge of the switch itself the nut location had nothing to do with it so raising the switch in the hole wouldn't effect any change.
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
Another thought, you said you have fixed this problem times. I am always willing to learn please post a video for this adjustment process. I would watch it eagerly.
@briankientz29263 жыл бұрын
I have not got a video of this, but have seen what seems to be that same situation on a few les paul guitars, and lifting the switch while lowering the nut atop the surface by adjusting the nut under the surface has worked for me. This allows the switch lever to travel further allowing more positive detenting. But as we all know there are always variables...

I've had mine for a year straight from Gibson it worked fine until it came loose now I'm having the same problem works fine without the cap then put the cap on a it won't stay in the correct pick up btw what year is that guitar mine is 2021 and why did it work then not work?
@jonahguitarguy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The one worked on in this video was not as new as yours but still pretty new. the switch needs to be higher in the hole so the knob can swing the full arch. You could grind the button down like I did or possibly remove a washer from un the top to raise it's level.
