So much sublime brilliance in this video... from the depth of interaction to the unabashed daring group interplay to the risk-taking story-telling narratives on display. AND -- Tivon is no joke. Beautiful -- thanks for posting Jonah!

Brilliant, beautiful deconstruction of a tune that's been played gazillions of times. Technically, musically, tonally and improvisationally fascinating. Listen once and move on.

I like this. These young conservatory trained guys have chops and haven't played many general business gigs because they don't exist anymore. So they just take rhythms and harmonies way out there because it's fun and they can. I don't knock this at all like the guy a little further down on the thread did. It's just music!

they fuck with the form interestingly but still give you a little somethng to hold onto to, refer to the original songs shapes enough to make it a conversation with the audience, too not just between themselves and music majors. . most wankers don't. know how to do that. le difference between playing freely, and just jacking off "musically" before a bewildered and bored public.Take note young wankers, heirs to the jazz audience killing "straight ahead" guys that were your teachers, and almost killed jazz dead. Otherwise you really will kill jazz completely dead.

they leave the form and go free. Personally I don't think you need to be constantly able to hear people outlining changes so that you can quickly write it down in your little notebook. Its okay to enjoy the music in the moment rather than anticipating how they'll approach a 2-5.

LOL exactly... pure chaos at the expense of trying to "reach" for what is not there... Where is the discipline to play "inside" these days.... Its way easier to play "out" and have no fulcrum of tonal centre as opposed to playing like Pops or Prez...Im totally lost in this performance... and it wouldn't surprise me if the players were also....
@garrettbeckermusic204
@garrettbeckermusic204 6 жыл бұрын
I don't hear anyone lost at any moment of this performance honestly, I hear every single player acutely aware of each other and their respective functions in the moment. Like you say, a lesser musician would probably have gotten lost but these guys are most definitely not.
@person906
@person906 5 жыл бұрын
....have any of you listened to Live at the plugged nickel??? Second great quintet? You know Tony's whole schtick on that gig was that they were "getting lost on purpose" and intentionally abandoning and returning to the form?or Circle with Anthony Braxton Chick Corea and Dave Holland? Ari's band even still does a head in and head out, which these days innovators like John Hollenbeck are questioning. Jazz is not a music that should stagnate by having musicians be slaves to form, and these musicians clearly still revere and respect the tradition.

Oh man, I don't know. I'm just not a believer. I've watched dozens of Hoenig vids on the recommendation of friends, and I just don't feel it. Maybe if I heard Mr. Hoenig live, maybe if I were there, I'd dig it more. But this just leaves me cold. It's a lot of technique with absolutely no musical center at all. They all sound like they're reaching for something profound but not getting there. In other words, it sounds like really well executed bullshit. Worse, it's all stuff we've heard before and done much better by Coltrane, Tristano, Monk, Haynes, etc, etc, etc. Someone earlier mentioned "conservatory trained", and that's what I think the issue is for me. NONE of these guys have any identity whatsoever. Or interesting ideas. Or the ability to interact with each other in any meaningful way. Anyway, not a fan.
@VojtechRozsival
@VojtechRozsival 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should not be such a prick, that would really help. They are having fun and it is amazing live. Communication is the key and if you say that you have heard this before, I would recommend you ear examination. This is not the bop you've heard from "Coltrane, Tristano, Monk, Haynes". It would be perfectly enough if you admitted that you do not like it, or don't understand it. But hell no, you must be a smartass and insult. Only bullshit I smell around here is your useless comment. Grab your ego and hand in hand go away, nobody is forcing you to like it or even listen to it. ;o)
@person906
@person906 5 жыл бұрын
Jean Michel is self taught, he never even went to conservatory. These people are transcribed for their originality all the time. The transitions in the tune are so tight and everyone is clearly listening to each other intensely and constantly. It sounds like your not a musician so maybe you don't know how difficult it is to keep your concentration that focused for a 15 minute tune. I don't know why you're comparing these people to Trane or Monk or Roy, this isn't bebop, and jazz doesn't have to bebop.
