Been there, seen this very concert, travelled all the way from Poland. Flight to NY $xxxx, hotel $xxx, entry fee $xx, experiencing night gigs at Smalls - priceless. Makes life worth living.

Love the development of those thematic ideas from the melody but also that sense of total freedom and space. Hard to combine the two. Will have to find that Jim Hall version.

The intro is the same note intervals as the original intro, they're just messing with the time. Jazzster123, I wholeheartedly disagree. I don't wanna hear the original version of this song where everything is exactly the same aside from the solos. They're making their own version here. I think that's the beauty of playing old standards in the modern jazz setting.

@stevend13544 жыл бұрын
Straight up, straight ahead, etc. This is a standard jazz song (it's new to me however, big jazz fan but more of a "Fusion" guy than traditional, so i'm no history buff) But I guess this could be considered "Traditional" Jazz

Is this just in 4/4 time? I have a bit of a struggle figuring it out!
@ksr20910 жыл бұрын
Yes! Tempo is about 1/4 note = 350b.p.m (pretty fast!) If you go to the beginning of the vid, the first bass drum hit is on the 1st beat, followed by snare on the 2nd and 3rd. They build that little motif over the first few minutes of the vid. When the guitar first comes in, he joins on the 2nd and 3rd beats of each measure. It's easy to hear this displaced (as if those hits were on the 4th and 1st beats), which is one of the things that makes this recording challenging. Good luck!:)

they sound incredible, but it's frustrating to watch this as a guitarist because gilad's hands always seem to be slightly out of frame.

Ask someone why they like jazz and they will often tell you it's all about the improvisation and freedom to create. BUT! Make sure you don't create or improvise in any way different than.......fill in the blank.

Fine guitarist and band, but this tune should not be entitled The Way You Look Tonight. Gilad uses his pedal board to transform his sound which is fine and exotic for many listeners, but departs from any real reference to a jazz standard. He barely states the melody around six minutes in.
