I love that HDMI was originally sold to the public as a way to solve the issue of connecting a bunch of audio cables (I won't count the DRM features) but introduced harder to troubleshoot problems than existed before.

Totally. I am an above average tech guy but had no idea of the sound/image synch issue with sound bars and HDMI eARC connections until I recently bought a sound bar to hook up to my new qled tv. Finally got that fixed but I kept thinking, the average consumer would be driven mad trying to deal with that type of issue. Now the rear surround speakers started turning off in the middle of watching movies/tv… freak’n annoying!

The reason that unplugging works is because many devices don't turn all the way off. They go into standby mode, so "powering off" doesn't have the desired effect when trying to solve a problem. Unplugging from power long enough to allow all the capacitors in the device to discharge will do a full power off.

This video helped resolved my persistent issue in a matter of seconds. I called the Bose support team and none of their recommendations resolved the sound issue. @3:20 You seem to be confusing the eARC On/Off setting for a general ARC On/Off. My soundbar does not support any of the advanced high-bandwidth audio formats where eARC would be required. The eARC settings in the TV are Off and Auto, and I've set it Off. The sound bar is OK with that.

Thank you so much for making this video! My Sonos Arc would no longer connect to my LG TV after a power outage. I tried to reconnect unsuccessfully for about an hour and gave up. I even ordered new HDMI cables. I was worried that the HDMI connections were damaged from the power surge and that I might have to replace either the TV or the Sonos arc. Both are obviously very expensive items. After watching your video, I simply disconnected every single cable and wire and left them that way for an entire night. In the morning, I reconnected all the wires and miraculously the sound just reconnected. Perhaps the length of time helped the TV reset itself . I am incredibly relieved! I now have the power cables connected to a surge protector. Not sure why I never thought that was important prior. Thanks again!

Exceptional contribution to human audio/video sync universal knowledge. The information, combined with the comments, was a bit overwhelming at times. Had to pause the video to let my sore hand recover from note taking. Left me with that "more than I ever wanted to know" feeling, but thankful that I had it saved to a Playlist for later reference. The only issue that's not an issue at all was chapter 8. The words were faster than synaptic functionality. Had to play it at 0.5x video speed to pardon the pun, allow my brain to sync with your video presentation speed. "If you plug cable two in your left ear, was cable 4 still in your back pocket? Or is it in your shirt pocket next to the Bic pen?": metaphorically speaking. I dropped my coffee on first experiencing the phenomenon. Great work! (I think)

Thanks Jonah. A very helpful video. I have a CX myself and, apart from an occasional sound sync issue with my Sony amp, all connections work well. However, I’ve got one annoying regular problem that I can’t seem to resolve. If I switch the amp to the TV input so that it uses the eArc-enabled CX port, I always have to go into the tv sound settings and reset it to use the eArc sound output as, for no obvious reason, the CX has always set itself back to ‘internal speaker’ since I last used the input. It’s easy enough to switch back but annoying to have to do every time.

I have had a similar issue with an Oled TV and a dolby Atmos soundbar while using an Nvidia Shield. After trying a bunch of different cables - from cheap to expensive certified cables and using the soundbar as a passthrough but eding up with video degradation - probably because of the bad quality of the passthrough of the soundbar I couldn't get a stable signal on dolby vision. My solution was to set all my AV sync off on the TV and on the soundbar and use the audio delay function on the Nvidia shield. I am now set on +250ms on standard content and +300ms on Dolby Atmos content and that has fixed my issues as I now can use the ARC port and my picture comes straight from the shield to the TV. If you dont have a shield as your media device, and you have exhausted all the mentioned "fixed" in the video, I would start playing with the audio delay on the soundbar itself.

The OLED TV isn’t a LG, is it? I had a lot of issues with HDMI video and audio (no signal at all on a LG OLED 55 C1)and finally decided to read the manual. I have sync issues with external devices using arc. Dolby introduces audio delay that you can't correct with sync settings because you can only delay it more. I have to use DTS instead as that seems to be pretty much in sync. PCM is fine too other than being limited to stereo. And my receiver only has hdmi out so I can't go through the receiver. Seems like an issue that's never really been fixed with passthrough from external devices.
@wesleycampbellcaretto69422 жыл бұрын
I'm having the same issue!!! Driving me crazy. Hooked my PS5 up to my LG TV. Dolby is noticeably delayed out of my sound bar. DTS is delayed but usable in cinema mode (but game mode increases the delay because the video isn't processed as much). PCM is synced up but like you said, stereo only. If I run sound and video to my soundbar from the PS5 and use HDMI passthrough to the TV, I don't get a delay. This makes me think it has something to do with the TV having to decode Bitstream audio over ARC. No clue how to save it. Was considering buying a receiver to run all AV input through the TV and soundbar separately, but it sounds like this problem might still be possible.
@HullRupture2 жыл бұрын
@@wesleycampbellcaretto6942 interesting, I run dts in game mode and it's almost perfectly in sync to my ears but that might just be you're more sensitive to sync delay. I think dts is still delayed but its hardly noticeable. I only notice it when the sound is coming out of the controller as well as tv and there's an echo effect, but it still follows the audio in a very tight gap that doesn't make it completely distracting. DTS in game mode is more than playable for me but Dolby is horrendous and unusable. But like you say PCM is perfect and bang on. This problem has existed for a number of years and it's not just LG I don't think. It's something fundamentally the TV has to do with passing the signal on like you say maybe the TV has to decode it first and then pass it on. Don't see why it should have to though but obviously I'm not an expert. Yeah the best setup you can have is av receiver that you run everything to the receiver then to your TV and just use pcm multichannel. But then it has to be modern receiver that passes through 4k and hdr etc properly. Or if you have earc supported on TV and receiver then you can have multichannel pcm over earc. But I've heard that some people are still getting sync issues with earc even. Unfortunately my receiver only supports hdmi out Arc and no hdmi inputs so its the only way I can hookup my ps5 to the receiver.

I don’t see this in your chapter titles, so I wanted to ask- the problem we’ve had since an update added “arc” to the hdmi input on our Roku tv is that the volume is significantly tempered (where we used to have the a/v receiver set at about 45-50 normally, we now have to keep the volume level at 70) on most Roku channels, and the av connected devices (ps4/Blu-ray). The notable exception is the KZbin channel which comes in at the old volume so with the tv now set at 70, blasts way too loud. The settings didn’t change, so we can only assume that the Roku update adding ARC had something to do with it. Have you ever heard of this particular problem?

@Jonah - I recently upgraded my main TV from a Sony XBR-75X940D (2016) and moved this TV to my bedroom. Downstairs it was paired with a Denon AVR-X4300H and ARC worked perfectly. However, in my bedroom I have an older Denon AVR-4311. ARC works perfectly every time I power cycle the TV and the receiver. However, if I turn off the TV and turn it back on, there is no sound from the speakers even though the TV thinks it is connected to the receiver. I have followed all troubleshooting steps and spent at least 4 hours on this. Power cycling fixes it, only till the TV is turned off again. In the Bravia Sync device list the Denon appears as “AVR-4311” but after turning the TV off and then ON, it appears as “Sound System” and there is no audio.

Checked firmware updates (both are updated) and nothing. I did factory reset on my TV and ARC not back. I did a HDMI refresh on TV and Still not working. My last try was on my AV hdmi refresh. Turn off power on wall and I unplugged all 3 plugs. Turned on power and plugged back one by one hdmi cable and ARC is back! Thanks buddy! This problem started after I'm back from a five day trip that I had turn off all power cables because lightning storm It's pretty common in Rio de Janeiro for this season.

Jonah, loved the video but I have a quick question if you don't mind? I use eARC with Sonas Arc but want to split the audio to supply my low end amp which drives my couch bass shakers. Any idea how best to do that? Thank You in advance, Cy

After hours of trying to figure out my problem the HDMI refresh worked! TV detected my home theater automatically and I can control the volume using the TV remote. Thanks!

Great info. Where sould my cable box be connected to? I have it (and other stuff) connected to my avr. When I try to watch a streaming service on my tv, the sound of the cable box channel keeps playing.

None of these worked for my TV remote issue, but this was all good to know in the future. Have a Samsung q90b, sonos Arc My solution for fixing the remote issue was going to “connected Devices” on the left side of the Home Screen. Then I went to “universal remote setup” and I selected the type of sound device that was already connected to the TV. I proceeded to follow the TV instructions from there on.

Thanks Jonah, I have an LG TV with an LG sound bar. I have issues with sound not coming through my sound bar but only from certain streaming apps. Usually Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime. Both apps are updated and I access them through my LG TV. I did once need to uninstall the Apple app for it to work again. I have done nearly everything you have covered but a hard reset. What stinks is everything works for a while but then I run into the same issues again. I also have issues with the volume. Sound bar through the TV while watching cable works great. When I switch to different streaming services usually I have to crank up the volume. Any thoughts?

Could be the TVs Smart Apps causing the issue. Do you have another media streamer you could try? (Fire TV, Roku, etc.)

@@JonahMatthes Yes I have Roku, I was thinking of trying that but it’s so convenient going through the TV apps. I will give it a try.

When I encounter sound and sync issues I usually reboot the systems. Power on and off my routers, TV, sound-bar and all connected devices. This has worked every time in the past 10 years.
