BRAVO Jonas! Most certainly a 'bravura' performance which is never dull and always full of musicality. Those of you who whine on about how his voice is not 'this' or 'that' be grateful that in Jonas we have a tenor who is handsome, a musician and INTERESTING to watch and to listen to!

I've recently realized that his trills are just beyond amazing. So clean and finished! He does them great in Verdi too. Some people find all sorts of flaws in various instances of his singing, but the overall history of his repertoire has shown that there's nothing he can't do. A subtle stroke of genius is what this master has. From Mozart to Wagner - all on a level of highest musicality and technique. I wish he wasn't as good-looking. I think that confuses people and distracts from an objective valuation. People see him and think something's rotten in Denmark - this just can't be, this guy can't possibly sing well TOO.

I am impressed with Jonas' agility. This ranks as one of the best renditions that I have heard.The benchmark for this was set by Herman Jadlowker.

I can agree that Idomeneo js not for his voice but DAMN he did a remarkable job! Is not easy work out that heavy voice on those coloratura notes....he a great artist!

@sterneflamme This is not a baritone, although he does have baritonal timbre, which is the mark of a tenor who will move into more dramatic territory, which I understand he has done in the last several years. The timbre is not purely baritone but has a dark quality combined with a tenorial trumpet quality, especially when heard over an orchestra. While I agree that he doesn't manage all the fioratura cleanly, for a voice of his type what he has achieved is rather a feat

@JuanDiegooooo You may not consider it bravura, but the fact that someone with a voice of that type manages to sing all of the fioratura, even if not completely cleanly, is a feat of bravura in my book. The runs in this particular aria are perhaps the most demanding I've ever run across and fiendishly difficult to execute.

Mr Kaufmann sung this role several times on stage in Zurich. His performance was breath taking in particular when you compare with the small lyric voices who usually sing Idomeneo!

Nothing will ever compare to Rockwell Blake singing this...the cleanest coloratura singing I’ve ever heard

@JuanDiegooooo There are two versions of this aria. One with the coloratura omitted (There's a Domingo version of that one on KZbin), and the complete version that Kaufmann attempts here, which is called the 'bravura version'. That's it.

Folks, Idomeneo is the ONLY Mozart role suited to Kaufmann's voice! And though most big tenors eschew the fioritura in this aria, JK does it just fine. Personally, for Idomeneo, I prefer a big tenor to the light tenors who do it these days. Study up on the historical practice with this role and the fach classification.. this is a Mozart tenor role that need NOT be sung by a stereotypical "Mozartean tenor"! ;)

Johnny Lee Green You are quite right. William Mann, former music critic of the London Times and author of The Operas of Mozart, said that the role of Idomeneo required a Tristan-voice that was fluent in fioritura. I see no reason to differ with that assessment.

peccato per la sua voce capprina ( in questa aria soltanto) quasi tutta la sua coloratura è fallita , ma c`è altra via per cantare questa aria , ed è la versione semplice senza la coloratura è che alcune voci dicono che è la versione originale e che la cantano leopold simoneau , richard lewis e tante altri .

This is just the repertoire that suits his LEGGERO voice. He needs to learn the good emission of the voice. Nothing to do to Rokcwell Blake"s performance. If he is the next Vickers, I am the Queen of England.

He may get all the coloratura ut that doesn't make it good. Here Peter Schreier's recording of this and you will realize what a true Mozartian tenor is. Believe me I love Kaufmann! I saw him as Parsifal and he blew me away!! I just think that his voice is not suited to these roles

Kaufmann is one of my favourite tenors, but I think that this role is not for his voice... :( Only Pavi could arrange this role in the most complete way.. from the new tenors for this role I prefer Saimir Pirgu, check it out ;)

Hm, listening to this piece in Kaufmann's presentation is very odd experience indeed. FIrst of all I have to admit that Kaufmann's voice neither was big nor had any squillo, deepness, shine. Technically it is quite bad as well, if he wanted to perform this aria he should prefer the alternative Raaff's version. Because bravura aria is a very fast music first of all. This too slow tempo is just unacceptable. The fioritura elements are so poorly performed, especially famous long staccato lines and thrills. Short breath, there is no any hint of effortless which is the main characteristic of the Mozartian singing. Although I'm very appreciated you for this rare and really exclusive record.

Hm, it is not bad at all. Not versatile enough, not "mozartic" enough. It is too heavy for Mozart. But hey, I am glad once I am able to sing that!
