The airport at Šilutė is where I learned to fly, at 14 years old. We flew those little "wings on the frame" open cockpit gliders (Lak-16) that were towed by this really cool winch design that went in a loop around pulleys - you can still see the winch car at the very right corner of the airport - I think its still active and kids still fly them. At 16 I graduated to L-13 Blanics, its so sad to see all those wings rotting now, but I think they reached their end of life limit and became non-airworthy. I guess its still technically a military base, but last time I visited (5 years ago) there was still a club operating from there. Too bad you missed those folks, they have some really cool planes inside the hanger. Wilga was an awesome tow-plane, I remember on few occasions, when flying to competitions, we would tow 2 gliders behind it, one on a short rope and one on a long one.

Thanks for the video! This peninsula is called Curonian Spit and it stratches for 98 km between Kaliningrad region of Russia and Lithuanian Klipeda and it's one of my favorite places on earth. You must have noticed how fresh the air saturated with the pine trees scent is! In some places it's very narrow - just 400 meters and it's pure sand.

Great video! I was at the Imperial war museum in London a few weeks ago and I was the same way - wow a Merlin engine -cool, Wow a Lancaster bomber cockpit - cool! Lithuania looks beautiful. I have a small house on the other side of the Baltic sea (Sweden, on the island Gotland) but not yet traveled to the baltic states. Growing up during the cold war makes you kind of forget they are there as they were so very much out of reach back then. Keep up the good work with your inspiering videos, and as someone else said - don't stress it with Sylvia - let things take the time needed. A wedding is a really nice party to spice things up whenever.

Jonas, thanks for letting Silvija introduce us to her home. It seems to be absolutely beautiful; at least in the summer/fall. I would love to meet you guys but I live in southern Arizona. My father went to work for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Ca. when I was 5 and I have been an aviation addict all my life. I retired from the Tucson Air Guard after 41 years where we trained fighter pilots in the F100, A7 and F16. I had been missing the aviation community ever since until last year when I discovered your videos along with Trent, Cory and, above all, the Pateys. Thank you guys so much. Honestly, I really do watch for the flying but have to admit that Silvija is a real bonus. Funny thing. My relatives live in central Kentucky and it is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. However, they all LOVE it out west because the scenery is so spectacular. Thanks again for sharing that with all of us and keep up the great work.

My dad got up and close to a Wilga that landed to refuel at Big Beaver Airport in Troy, MI. The owner/pilot was enroute to California. His overhead instrument panel light had gone bad, limiting him to daytime flying only. My dad drove him to a hardware store that sold a comparable infrared bulb. A free ride ensued and dad came home grinning from ear to ear. Years later, I spotted the same Wilga at the County Airport in Compton, CA. Our community is small, by flying standards. Enjoy your years and treasure the memories always.

GREAT vid, Jonas & Silvija! The first time I've ever really seen REAL shots of Lithuania, outside of major cities. My great-grandmother would have LOVED this! She always wanted to go back to visit, but was never able to. She always said the landscape and trees were very similar to MA (where she lived, and I still live) - I see what she meant now - not the same, but similar. Also my first time hearing Lithuanian spoken (I probably heard it from my great-grandmother in the early 70's, but I was too young to remember). My grandmother (her daughter) had forgotten most of the words by the time she was 90 - if you don't use it, you lose it, especially with age. Wish she could have had access to the internet like we all do today. She'd have loved it. Was a tougher, and much different time then, for sure. Amazing you found 2 Wilgas!! What are the odds of that? You guys had better play the lottery now, LOL! That was really cool! That museum was great as well. Thanks for sharing, guys! Will be watching for your next one. 👍🍻

What a great video. It was neat to listen to her speak in her native tongue to that guy. By the way that cutter on the back of that tractor is called a PZcutter they were imported into the United States in the middle 80’s by the German company Deutz, we have one we still use. It is for cutting hay but you can ground sit it and it makes a good grass cutter for an airport also. Those things were bulletproof. Nothing breaks or wears out on them except the blades if I’m not mistaken they were made in Switzerland.

Great vid Jonas (& Silvija)! Way better than some commercial-tourism-video-bit... (if, even Lithuania has them). Real deal, real peeps, on the streets! Between you, Silvija, some of the awesome comments below, and some digging on the web, I now know a wee bit more than the mere fact that Lithuania and Wilga's exist! Wikipedia has a decent page on the Wilga's (apparently the excess of 1,000 various versions of the PZL-104 Wilga's were built in Poland, of which around 935 were 35's or 80's... this is the most built of any specific type of aircraft in Poland's history... and in 2004 there were intentions of building them in America... buuuuuut, nope, nodda, and production ceased in 2006 [sad face]). And that (former?) military air field, just like what seems to be a lot of in Lithuania... old suedo abandoned bits of awesomeness. I found the airfield and it's designation, but not much else. Your video was only 25 minutes, but I spent easily over 4 hours combing the web and finding out all kinds of interesting stuff on aircraft and Lithuania, thanks to you two! CHEERS!
