Also I'm curious, is it possible to fly throught the clouds, are they really volumetric or just a "fake" simulation. What happens if the camera is higher than the height of the clouds? Thanks.
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really work like that you can fly through them. As they are part of the environment background they are always kind of infinitely far away. It's not meant to replace volumetric clouds that you can fly through and so on.

@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
Unless you do a refractive materials just leave everything at the default of 1.6. No need to treat that too scientific as the visual difference is almost non distinguishable between let’s say an IOR of 1.465 and 1.565

@@JonasNoell Yeah that's what I have been doing but I have always wondered if this was the wrong approach. Thank you very much for replying!
@dbroadwayvfx2 жыл бұрын
So on the energy preservation thing, one of the developers said to turn it on in old scenes, you need to use MaxScript. I have NO idea how to use MaxScript, and was wondering if anyone could explain to me how to add energy preservation to one of my old scenes. The developer said... "Mind that it will be on by default for new materials, but for existing ones it's off to keep the consistency. You need to switch the option manually in MaxScript if you want to test it on old scenes (.option_gtrEnergyCompensation)"
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
Yes, same here, it's a bit confusing. So unless you know scripting and build yourself an own script for the moment there is no easy way to "upgrade" all your previous V-Ray Materials. If you don't use many shaders it might be the most practical to just build a new shader and then relink your node network. Anyway, as demonstrated the effect is really subtle and only affects extremely rough materials (anything below a glossiness of 0.5 or so) in a noticable way. So just pick those shaders in your scene and rebuild them and ignore the others.

Also immer eine eher düstere Stimmung. Insgesamt aber sieht das ganze sehr vielversprechend aus. Hast du schon getestet, ob die selben Szenen wirklich schneller rendern, als die vorherige Version?
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын

Is irradiance map still there? I remember that in vray 5 there was always a warning that it wouldnt be supported in the future
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
It's still there but certain features don't work when enabling it. I hope it will stay there as it's very essential for certain kind of scenes where bruteforcing would require way too much time. However as far as I have read in the forums Chaos seems to want to get rid of it in the midterm. Fingers crossed they will change their mind...
@L3nny6662 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell I totally get, that from a developer point of view it's a lot of work to develop and improve for basically two "different" engines, but without Irradiance Map, I don't know how to render. Brute force is too noisy and takes to long. To get a decent result with IM, my 5950x can take up to 2 hours, with BF it's probably double that. And that's already like the best performing consumer CPU. We can't all get Threadripper 64 core CPUs.

That from my knowledge balances the AA samples with the Material/Light/etc. samples. I would recommend leaving it at default and not mess with it unless you have a very specific reason to do so. In my career so far I never had to touch this...

Hi Jonas, How do you define the radius when using the finite dome? Is there a rule of thumb to be aware of?
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
It basically depends on the HDRI that you are using. If that HDRI is for example shot in a small room, then go for a small radius. If its a vast open landscape you should take bigger radius. You will notice pretty fast what radius is fine. I would normally choose the radius to roughly the same distance like the closest prominent foreground objects in the HDRIs are.
