I think another problem with storytelling in games is distractions. When I "level up" I think about what upgrades I am going to buy while a story section is rolling. At this moment the shiny level up icon and the long term planning process that I have been putting a lot of effort into completely trumps the cut scene that I have to sit though in the moment. I often completely miss what happened story wise. As soon as the cut scene is over I do the level up stuff that I had been thinking about, and then just follow quest markers or whatever because I hadn't actually been following what was going on in the game's story.

Thanks, this was quite a good one. I really enjoy his lectures. I'm not sure why some people call Jonathan pretentious when he obviously can prove that he knows what he's talking about. Perhaps they should look up the definition of the word?

Exactly. People seem to use the word to describe things they don't understand and/or care about.

Hmm this is an interesting take, as a designer we need to have a sponge mentality and you know absorb as much insights as we could, I did so listening to this lecture though I still disagree with some of his thoughts on pre baked story and challenge presentation, he is speaking in context of games being artforms and wanting to transcend the industry into art, which I don't think is necessary it boils down to having a balanced industry, as it will alienate players who don't necessarily want to have their lives changed by playing a game.

0:55:54 ... Holy shit. My mind was blown on how well that was put into words. Wow.

Yeah man, totally. You took the words right out of my thoughts. Here's something I find hilarious about pretentiousness if you're interested. Google this if you like: "in defense of pretension 366weird" and click the first link. I don't 100% agree with this article but it's definitely onto something. We can't actually label anything as pretentious unless the author being criticized sincerely cares about what they're doing. So pretentious ideas often take risks which is something that's vital.

With a name like Blow, you know he's going to be bullied to the point of either being a genius, or blowing (ha) his own brains out. Lucky for us, it turned out to be the former.
