Having just finished my Full Cave certification in Tulum, Mexico I wanted to rewatch some of the videos that inspired me. Jonathan, this is one of the videos that peaked my interest the most and got me excited about it. It took a few years of training to reach the required skill and comfort level but it was so worth it. The training is fun and the Mexican cenotes are beautiful. Can't wait to visit Brian in the Bahamas someday soon.

This segment was filmed in 4K and released in the new 1080/60p KZbin format. If you watch this at its highest quality, it actually looks better than you can get on HD television.

+sergio hernandez Jonathan is amazing, but he is only one of a huge list of people who've inspired me : Alexandr Oparin (soviet biochemist who was the first man to assume that Life began in the oceans); Alexander von Humboldt (prussian explorer who traveled around the globe, describing many marine species); Alfred Russel Wallace (british naturalist who, along with Darwin, first convieved the theory of evolution through natural selection); Carl Woese (american microbiologist who divided the tree of life into three distinct branches : Bacteria, Archea and Eucarya); Charles Darwin (british naturalist who, along with Wallace, first concieved the theory of evolution through natural selection); Chris Packham (english naturalist who is known for hosting many BBC wildlife programmes including "Springwatch", "The Wonder of Animals" and "Nature's Weirdest Events"); David Attenborough (british broadcaster and naturalist who is best known for presenting the "Life" series and narrating many more documentaries); Edith Widder (american marine biologist who is an expert in bioluminescence and one of the team who successfully filmed a giant squid underwater); Ernst Haeckel (german biologist who mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms); Gerhard Jarms (german scientist who is one of the most renowned medusae scientists in the world); Jim Al-Khalili (iraqi-born british theoretical physicist who has used the theory of quantum mechanics to explain many biological events); John Veron (australian specialist in corals and reefs who has discovered and described hundreds of new coral species); Jonathan Bird (american cinematographer and diver who is best known for being the host of BlueWorldTV); Kate Humble (english television presenter who has presented a number of wildlife and science programmes for the BBC); Mary Anning (british fossil collector and palaeontologist who is best known for making major discoveries among Jurassic marine fossil beds, including a complete skeleton of an icthyosaur); Mike deGruy (american underwater photographer who is best known for filming most of the scenes of "Life in the Freezer", "The Blue Planet" and "Pacific Abyss"); Richard Dawkins (english ethologist and evolutionary biologist who is well-known for many works on evolution); Steve Backshall (english natiralist who is best-known for presenting BBC's "Deadly 60" and for diving with many dangerous animals including great white shark, electric eel and sperm whale); Steve O'Shea (new zealander marine biologist who is known for his reshearch on giant squid and for being part of the team who first filmed it underwater); Tsunemi Kubodera (japanese zoologist who was one of the team who successfully filmed a live giant squid underwater).

+BlueWorldTV I liked the older tune more... This new one is cool, but needs some fixing in the mix. Still... I don't really think it works better than the previous one with the theme of the whole channel, but those decisions are up to you guys :) Keep doing these videos, they're amazing!

Hey Jonathan and crew I'm not sure you remember me but I was just a simple person with a dream to dive for a livng but for economic reasons I couldn't enroll on a course or much less buy my gear. Still after maybe three years I'm enrolling on my advanced course and own my own gear. With hard work and patience almost anything is possible and I wanted to thank you for inspiring me and many many others to learn and protect our blue world. I hope that someday I am able to help our oceans in a relevant way and you guys keep doing such a great job. I've never been happier and if anyone else is reading this all I say is I thought I would never be able to be where I am now but such is life. If you really want it go and get it...!!! It is never too late...

I knew scuba diving, especially cave diving, is not that easy but until now I never realized how much attention to details and care is needed, even for just making the very first step into a cave, and for safety reasons. Jonathan, at certain points in the cave, are you sure that there was water in them? I was amazed by the clarity and stillness of the water. You three seemed like your were floating in mid air. Thanks for this great video! You and your team do a marvellous job! Keep it up, all of you. Oh, by the way, Jonathan, congratulations for you cave diving certificate achievement.

It would appear from the video that caving ""without"" proper instruction and certification is a form suicide. Had no idea of the detail planning and procedures for caving that far exceed the average recreational divers training. Well done. Outstanding photography and imagery resolution.

Almost 100% of the deaths associated with cave diving are by untrained divers. Among properly trained cave divers operating within the rules, cave diving is extremely safe. But since there are so many deaths from untrained divers, the sport is considered dangerous.

A Full Cave diving Certification is useless unless you’re prepared to spend time keeping your skills polished and doing at least one cave dive every month perhaps more often. You will quickly lose your edge if you don’t practice these skills and become a danger to yourself. This is the main reason I never got the full cave certification

I’m glad this video was made. It can help many people to attest consider the safety issues required. Having confidance in diving gear equipment and knowing what experience cave diving might demand is very useful. Knowing all the tips,rules, techniques and terminology is key for a safe cave diving experience. I do appreciate the style of reconfigured equipment placement is necessary. Helmets and flashlight communications. Thank you sharing and congratulations on your cave diving certification.

Yes, watching this video again openly and easily likes to keep renoticing how Jonathan's Bird's comments are accurate and grouppropriate❤ That longer breathing tube is a beautiful way of practical loving. Great pointingency. For safer cave diving experience (detailed leveled) That blind exercise was a great example in case of emergency. Finding the line and feeling for the triangle point in the right set standard direction. I am glad we had such an example video. No one else came close, it took a awhile. Wow, for moving gracefully through those cave columbs and gently qualifying a style suggested for many years To come. Exams are useful. Even mapping the cave can help people care more somehow❤ updating supports and matching accuracy, and or grace contests? Good memory exercise from the first time divers per-cave and best drawing grace mapped.

+sergio hernandez So the funny thing is that most people wear a 5mm or even a 7mm suit in those caves because the dives are so long (2+ hours). Believe it or not, 2 hours in 75° water gets colder than you think. When I showed up with a 3mm, Brian was afraid I wouldn't be able to make it through the dives without being cold. As it turns out the 3mm was fine for me because I'm hot blooded and I wear a hood.

Congratulations on earning your cave diving certificate, Jonathon. I'm a little curious to how many diving certificates he has achieved now. I assume a lot.
@BlueWorldTV
@BlueWorldTV 9 жыл бұрын
+TheAnimator727 Not really many to be honest. I have never been much into the certification game. When I started diving there were only a few (open water, advanced open water, etc.) and then they started coming up with all these silly specialty certifications like drysuit diver and night diver. ( I mean who needs a special C-card to go night diving for crying out loud?) I only have a handful, including open water, advanced open water, nitrox, a couple rebreathers, O2 provider, and now cave diving. I have absolutely zero certifications in scuba instruction. Not even divemaster or rescue diver. I am not interested in teaching scuba and I don't want the liability.

BlueWorldTV Yeah many specialties are nonsense. Advanced + Nitrox are useful for every recreational diver and I feel Rescue is also worth recommending to all. For me, it was the most challenging PADI course and one that gave me insight and confidence in how I can and will react to emergencies and stress. It’s not only useful to be able to help others in trouble but also helps you assess dangers and your own safety. Find a good instructor who doesn’t let you off easy and you’ll learn tons. I’m about to go on a sidemount training myself this summer that will also include buoyancy control, propulsion techniques, advanced Nitrox and stage handling. Perhaps next year I’ll follow you into cave training Jonathan. This video definitely peaked my interest.

In my previous Micronesia dive areas you also got certified for open water. By the US Army Corps of Engineers or you were denied arrival by air or sea. My paid job then was being part of that push-back as an armed officer. The worst issues went to a Federal Courthouse on Guam and there is a US Federal Prison on that island for a court ordered instruction..

Imagine diving with a friend and they start freaking out and kick up a lot of dirt and silt. So now you both are disoriented, lost, and a couple decisions away from suffocation.

+BlueWorldTV That original tune really set the tone for your videos, however. It was lighthearted yet heartfelt, peaceful yet playful. This new version is too bombastic, too heavy on the brass (sounds like a lame attempt at covering the Olympics theme). I absolutely understand the need/desire for changing things up after so long... But that theme/opening sequence really anchors all the episodes together. Watching in a playlist with my kids, this would be rather jarring. This is a great episode otherwise.

The drills and techniques are similar to wreck diving certification. Similar environments in some respects but each has it's individual dangers as well that you have to be prepared for.

I just now realized the air they breath out could get trapped in there. So technically you could force the water out by diving too much... my goodness.

Some caves have currents so if you’re blind you could probably be moving backwards or staying in the same place and have no idea. Then if the current is going in the direction of exit if you kick up silt you could be blind the entire way. Cave diving is beautiful but at what risk???

How come you did not use your force fins when doing this dive or when you were free diving?
@BlueWorldTV
@BlueWorldTV 9 жыл бұрын
+Jalen Madrid Force Fins are designed to give power on only one stroke, and fold up and allow your leg to rest on the return stroke. For free diving (which involves surface swimming) this method of operation doesn't work well, and the same thing with the "frog" kick we use in cave diving. So Force Fins are excellent general purpose scuba fins (the best made in my opinion) but they are not good for snorkeling, free diving or cave diving.
