This, when it was originally broadcast, was my first exposure to Meades - discovered in the way one used to discover things: a quiet evening with BBC Two on, back in the pre-streaming era when five terrestrial channels was the furthest extent of novelty. 'Nothing on. Let's give this a go.' It still feels as fresh and striking now as it did then. The subversion of all accepted norms of broadcast documentaries; confounding juxtaposition, unreliable narration, slanted conclusions, uncompromising elocution often in the pursuit of cheap gags and (obviously) everything about the visual style - not only was nobody else using the medium remotely like this at the time, they still aren't to this day. After that half hour, I resolved I needed to see everything this guy had ever made and look out for anything else he made in future.

At this point he can't be bothered even perfunctorily including onscreen text in the title sequence.

Jonathan Meades does a good impression of Jesus Christ. To me, he also walks on water, in Amsterdam. 😎🙃👍
