There is a lot that could be said here about this topic as it reflects the differences between Orthodox and Protestant views on what the church is and is not, what it is for, where the church is, and what happens when we gather.

Amen.. beautifully said.. and this isn't about earthly, temporal pride, but about an honor and generosity to God.. I am reminded when i used to watch Mother Angelica on EWTN when she would ask for donations and say that, the Lord has plenty of money but it is in 'your' pocket. Thank you.

I was in Italy this October and saw the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen. My Protestant mother in law said yeah they are beautiful but do we really need all this? It was frustrating to hear. Not once have I ever heard her question whether or not we as a society need more sky scrapers or billion dollar bank buildings. Yet when people for generations put their heart and souls into building the most beautiful things they could for God and for future generations to come and worship, that is what’s called into question.

We met in a warehouse in order to give to the poor, like hurracaine victims. It wasn't ugly. But I like your buildings, even if only from the outside. Maybe have tours.

This is a common criticism I hear This is another good argument and I understand it better now. Also, I heard that Bibles were so prescious, handwritten with beautiful pictures and the best of painting materials, with gold leaf decoration etc. and they had to be locked away in order to protect it from thieves. It wasn’t because they didn’t want to share the teachings but to preserve it for generations to come.

Also, because the pages of a Bible, or any other book, were made of animal skin, usually sheep or goat. It took a LOT of skins and a long time to prepare them. The benefit was that they lasted long.

But the sad thing, is that the poor are always with us. Not to mention, beauty is one of the many aspects of human life. If you don't get the beauty in the church, where you can get the beauty. In bar? Carnaval? Where do they dress like a whore?

I would tend to lean towards using money to help people as a way of worship…but I also think that creating beauty (including places of worship) are also ways of expressing worship.

I feel like it where the protestans that told catholics and orthodoxs that those fancy things should be sold to help the poor. Are they wrong? It always ended up being confused with all these debates between what is the proper path to glory.

Money that goes to beautiful churches is spent on something permanent. Money given to the poor will ultimately go to sinful causes (theee is a reason why they're poor!!!)

As i just said above here, Mother Angelica on EWTN used to say that the Lord has a lot of money but it is in our pockets. Judas also criticized that opening of the flask over Jesus's head as a waste since it could have been sold and the money given to the poor. NOT because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. I have a moment of horror, almost, right now and i have a sharpened sense of his evilness. Evilness. His CREATOR, his LORD, is sitting there in front of him and he dares to hard-heartedly deny HIM that honor. Anyway, the world has MORE than enough money to build BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES which also give spiritual comfort to the poor, as well as having enough money to feed, clothe, and house the poor in some way so that perhaps they might no longer be poor but can provide for themselves and others.. The world, and i must include myself here, just isn't doing it.. Honestly, there should be long lines for Holy Confession about this.. The coming celebration of the NATIVITY of Our Lord would be a good time, as HE comes to empty HIMSELF for all of us. ☦️💜📿💜☦️

@@fazerianducati I remember hearing a story of a Catholic priest in Latin America who tried to sell all of the valuable ornaments and decorations, etc. in his church to give to his poor community, but the people *refused* his offer because they wanted the church to remain beautiful. Almsgiving is important, but the poor will always be with us. More to the point, Christianity's goal isn't simply to remove poverty so that people can be well-fed and Godless, but to save our souls, for man does not live on bread alone. Additionally, one of the issues with our modern age is we ascribe little value to beauty because it has no immediate economic correlate. We fail to realize the intrinsic value of beauty and the impact it has on our being.

the point about beauty is that it is part of the process of ALL people becoming closer to God, and that in turn means that all are more loving, compassionate and giving. It is, or should be, a virtuous circle. As the father says, the waste is on personal egotistical statements of self aggrandizement, that are not to 'the greater glory of God'
