I don't go into extreme detail about all of the real-world tests, checks, and procedures that would be involved in starting a flight - this is purely a functional description of what you need to do to get the plane in the air.

yes my honeycomb controls weren't effecting the PMDG planes systems I noticed that if the parking break was on there it was like the plane had 2 parking brakes so had to make sure that one was off so just used the one in the plane

I don't think you can. Often the more complex/realistic aircraft take no notice of the flight planning menu in MSFS.

Which part to startup the engine for the PMDG Boeing 737-700? when i startup the engine engine 1 startup is fine but when i startup engine 2 or when i turn on both engines it says engine fail some sort what could be the issue?

You need APU air, fuel, ignition, and the starter lever to start and run the engine - so check the APU air pressure (make sure packs are not on when you start the engine), check the fuel pumps are on, check the ignition is set to GRD, and switched to the appropriate engine, and the start lever behind the throttle.

@@jonbeckett is it just me (because I’m a new PMDG 737 owner), or do the controller interfaces for manipulating cockpit buttons work differently compared to stock aircraft? For instance, to push a button on the FMC, I have to hit A on my controller three times… Once to select it. Once to actually push it. And then a final push of B to unselect it. There also isn’t any indication in the pop-up hints of the status of a switch when you hover the cursor over it. There also doesn’t appear to be an auto engine start… Unless I’m completely missing it somewhere in the key bindings. It’s definitely not what I already have bound to my controller. I still have yet to successfully make the aircraft flight ready from a cold dark start. Some things seem to work opposite of what you’re showing in your video, like the white engine 1 and 2 levers below the throttle quadrant; they’re already in the down position in the cold start. If I throw them upwards at 25% N1, it kills that engine. If I try starting them in the upward position, it won’t spool up past maybe 4%.

To hear VATSIM you need to install a VATSIM client - one of the most popular is VPilot. To hear ATC in the game you need to tune in the COM radio to the appropriate frequencies, OR just open the ATC window and select the channel you want to listen to (there's an icon in the toolbar within the sim, or press SCROLL LOCK on the keyboard).

I hadn't configured the controller yet - and it was obviously in the wrong position. A full checklist would have covered that - this wasn't a full checklist at all :)

Thank you for try to help simmers new to the 737. But l do have many concerns of your level of understanding of this aircraft, not to mention, how to correctly set it up for flight. Failing to follow the FCOM is a very dangerous way to start. Ground power on before checking switches is a dangerous, eg if PACKs are in the on position and ground power is turned on, you will damage the PACKS so no cooling and no cabin pressure. Starting APU without first checking the fire system is working is dangerous as you don’t know if you can put out a fire if it starts. And starting up the APU is done after the FMC setup as you are using valuable fuel and it could result in a fuel imbalance between the wing tanks requiring intervention. Probe heat switches on before engine start (except for icing conditions) will burn out the heaters. Fuel introduction into the engines is recommended by Boeing to be 25%, not 22% as it can cause a hot start which will require engine shutdown. You forgot to turn isolation valve to Auto. Lots of reasons for this. And taking off in this configuration will result in warning horns going off. And other issues in flight. You can’t move forward as your brakes are still on as you after releasing brake switch, you need to tap your pedals. It’s a safety feature on the 737. Turning on reverses on the ground is a major NO NO as it throws debris forward which can get sucked into the engine causing damage or a fire, or injure ground crew. Yes military jets do it but the 737 doesn’t as the engines are too close to the ground. And your FMC, MCP, EFIS Control unit are not setup correctly so the autopilot won’t work, and the Flight Director with all it many benefits won’t work making this really hard to fly. This needs to be done before engine start. Your just wasting fuel doing things after engine start. These are just a few of the errors picked up. I’m not trying to be rude, but there is a reason for following the FCOM and the order of steps. And before making a video like this, you need to know how to set the 737 up properly, and how to fly it properly which lm not convinced you do. If the simmer decides to turn on the failures option, there will be lots as a result of not doing proper procedures. And when things go wrong, the simmers following your video, won’t know why because they did what you said. Teaching beginners so many incorrect procedures and bad habits doesn’t help them, it just causes confusion and failures in trying to fly this aircraft. I guess if Simmers don’t care about flying the 737 properly or using any of it great features, and just want to fly it, then maybe they’ll get off the ground with only a few alarms going off, although in the configuration l doubt they will be able to fly it properly. But why buy a study level aircraft and ignore how to fly it properly. There’s a $20 737 that won’t care what you do to it. But if spending all that money on the PMDG then isn’t it worth hoping simmers the correct and safe way to fly it.

As I've said all over the place - this is NOT an accurate start up of the aircraft. The order is incorrect, and the checks and balances are missing - it's purely the functional steps required *in the simulator* to get the aircraft up and running quickly :)

It depends on the aircraft. Not in any of the "study level" payware aircraft - because they simulate the way the real aircrew enter flightplans. Even if you use Simbrief through some baked in feature in a cockpit, it doesn't bring in the whole flightplan.

Thank you for the fantastic video! What I can't understand is the function of the little switch between the two starter knobs. I've seen videos on real cockpits where neither pilot bothers with it during start up. Also they keep switching the other two switches back and forth during the flight between the "OFF" and "CONT" position. What is the meaning of doing that? Thank you

“OFF” is just what it sounds like: the starters are not firing at all. “CONT” means Continuous ignition. It is used for takeoff and then re-engaged on approach in case of a go-around. The purpose of it is an extra safety to keep the engine running by continuously firing the ignition during fast thrust changes (takeoff/go around: thrust is quickly changed from idle to full thrust) to prevent engine failures

the switch chooses what igniter in the engine is used. Each engine has two. On a real plane they alternate between them typically on each leg.

Hello Jonathan, When I start my 737-8 PMDG cold/dark, and start the GRND-PWR, after a few seconds the "TAKEOFF CONFIG" red alarm display ON and the throttle start to beeping. Do you have any thought what can be the problem? I try many things, changing throttle configs, etc, but no success. If i pull the throttle arm up/down than stop, but after couple seconds start beeping again... I'm kind of clueless.

Different liveries have different hardware configured (in line with the real variations of the aircraft) - you can configure each airframe via the FMC - MENU / PMDG / AIRCRAFT

Yep - the aircraft starts in a running state by default. Go into the FMC - MENU > PMDG > START STATE - you can set the start-up state, and it will remember it.

It's the default state of the aircraft. In the FMC, go to the PMDG menu, and choose the default state. It covers it in the manual.

Each livery of the 737-700 is a different configuration of the base aircraft - mirroring the real aircraft being simulated. Some have different options than others. If you look in the FMC, there are 15 pages of changes you can make to the aircraft :)

@@beepIL As far as I know, it's tied to the aircraft livery - so each livery essentially sets out the accurate features that the airframe has. I'm not sure you can create different ones without essentially creating a new livery.

Overall a good video, but you did miss out some things and get a couple of things wrong, or not operationally correct. With battery power, an alarm will only sound if the IRS’s are turned on. Before starting the APU, make sure you do a fire test. Also, the APU is usually only started if you either need to warm/cool the cabin, or just before you’re due to push back. The reason being is that the GPU is much cheaper to use for electrical power than the APU. Also, you forgot to arm the Emergency Exit Lights and turn on the electric hydraulic pumps. It’s called a Mode Control Panel….and the speed window should be set to your V2 speed, not 220kts or whatever other speed. But other than that, your presentation is very good.

I said right at the start that it was a functional guide - missing out a LOT. And if you leave the aircraft on battery for a long time, it *will* start warning as the battery discharges. There's a second video (recorded today) that covers some more bits and pieces missed here.

@@jonbeckett I was only commenting from an active operational point of view on some minor things for future videos. With regards to the battery power, when on DC power, there is an amber BAT DISCHARGE light that comes on, but I don’t think there’s an aural alarm for it. I think the only aural alarm is only if the IRS’s are being powered by the DC, but I could be wrong. Haven’t seen the second video though.

If you check the channel, I recorded a new version of this video - after configuring the controls properly (I had not done so when this was recorded). Configuration of axis for the 737 is a big subject - especially for those using the Airbus quadrant from Thrustmaster - I recorded a video specifically about it.

Usually the EGSS would be saved in the scratch pad to be put into the origin airport, for your routing. PMDG must have done away with this and made you retype it, as you would in the real aircraft.

@@jonbeckett Yep followed everything correctly. It’s all good though from another one of your tutorial’s I discovered that we can just start up ready to taxi which I love the realism of the cold and dark it’s a bit much for me to process. Thank you for making great videos. It really helps

Go into the FMC - MENU button, PMDG submenu - you can load the state.

It only asks if you go from cold and dark. Some of the panel states (FMC, PMDG menu) have it already done for you.

@@jonbeckett and it doesn't work very well with my bravo throttle quadrant. Autopilot and innunciator panel doesn't activate the aircraft systems like it should. It's a very complicated system and though very detailed honestly not that fun to fly. I would fly the TBM anyday. Just far more advanced and simplified system.

@@sgtstedanko7186 If configured, the Boeing can fly the entire route all on it's own - from takeoff to landing :) I'd like to see the TBM do that (or carry 300 passengers from London to New York) :)

@@jonbeckett Yes if configured. But you see that's the issue. Every tutorial I watch to configure it like that, it's still fussy. I don't know if there's bugs somewhere in the code for this thing, or if there's limitations within the sim itself. The TBM isn't an airliner so hardly a comparison. Im talking about not having a million switches and a simple touch screen FMC. The Boeing is still nice but I'm starting to wonder if I wasted my money.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU WANT POP OUT SCREENS - the PMDG 737 for MSFS DOES NOT HAVE THEM. This is essential if you are a home cockpit builder. Don’t get it now, wait until they add this functionality.
