In the quick scroll-through of my feed, I misread the title as 'The "Kim Jong-un" Laptop' and thought for a moment Bringus had gotten his hands on one of those NK laptops and decided to turn one into a SteamDeck.

2:30 In the unicode standard, kanji have a full width version, from when japanese computers had all their own systems and terminals, and half width, for use in regular terminals. There's some other differences, but mostly the half width are literally just squished full width. I believe that half width is still mostly used in terminals and anything that relies on characters being normalized, and full width can be used for legibility and normalcy in like text docs and stuff.

To add onto this, the "previous candidate/conversion" key is part of the system for selecting kanji to type, as many kanji in Japanese have the same pronunciation (excluding pitch accent) and as such are typed the same way when using kana or romaji. This key, as well as the key on the opposite side of the space bar, are used for scrolling through the list of possible kanji (and kana if you're typing with romaji)

people use them as distraction free writing devices, which can retail new for thousands, so older options like that and the alphasmart are popular. the last gag about the phone with a bluetooth keyboard is spot on. there's one selling for 200usd that's basically a cheap phone with only a word processor on it
@virepri9871
@virepri9871 7 сағат бұрын
What you saw were the humble muhenkan and henkan keys, which are used to basically tell the computer how to handle the kana that was just input Muhenkan tells it "nope, don't convert that to kanji", henkan tells it "pick out the next conversion", because some words are homophones or overlap syllables or whatnot.

In the 2000s in Japan they had a lot if amazing electronic 電子辞書dictionaries. They often had a lot of features like could play mpeg2 video files and games.

I think this is it. Hence the "Japanese-English" and "English-Japanese" buttons next to the screen. Electronic dictionaries were big in East Asia before the smartphone era. Many of them came with multimedia features such as video/audio player and FM/TV receiver. Some models even had open access to the underlying OS(usually Windows CE). I remember installing OpenTTD and spending too much time playing it on my device.

@@PercyPanleo They're popular with the same crowd that would be looking at something like the Freewrite (writers who don't like to be distracted), the more recent DM250 in particular, which is more palatable to those accustomed to North American keyboards. Whether or not that was the original intended target audience a decade ago, I do not know, but it's likely that's their bread and butter nowadays. Honestly, these look far more appealing than any of the Freewrite products, if you ask me.

7:50 When the DM100 was released, a lot of businessmen in Japan would have likely been using a flip phone or candybar phone that wouldn't really work well with a Bluetooth keyboard, and I suspect that the Bluetooth functionality was meant primarily for using it with a PC. Students probably also used it as a distraction free note taking device, given that it's still decently common for students in Japan to buy flip phones instead of full smart phones to reduce distractions. Interestingly, they actually made a model with an e-ink display instead of an LCD display called the DM30. It's still one of the only digital word processors to use an e-ink display, and imo it's form factor is still ahead of every e-ink word processor that's come since

In Japan KING JIM is mostly known as a brand that makes stationary goods, like binders and notepads and stuff. OH GOD I just checked their website, on the FRONT PAGE they are advertising the successor to this thing, the DM250. I am NOT making this up. It comes in white!! It has USB-C! For the launch they had a limited edition clear version! Clearly this thing has it's fans...

I think the point of note-taking devices is distraction-free writing. There's other tools like the AlphaSmart series, that are used for that kind of thing. It's good for people with weak willpower who want to put the phone in another room and just bang out a draft or two.

this seems like an electronic Japanese-English dictionary. A common term for them is denshi jisho, or 電子辞書 . A lot of them are basically just Microsoft Handheld PCs running a locked down version of Windows CE. They can come with multiple dictionaries and encyclopedias, video players, and odd functions like note taking. there's actually a port of gnuboy called gnuboy-ex that runs on casio ex-word electronic dictionaries, so it's possible to game on one
