I wish this kind of lighting technology was about in the 1980s when I was a coal miner. I remember when, near to the end of the decade we got halogen bulbs in our cap lamps and we thought it was the dog's danglies! How things have improved, LEDs are the future (next to garlic bread of course).

I have used several Nitecore products including lanterns that can show the battery voltage. These 21700 and 18650 batteries are rated at 3.7 volts Based on my experience 4.2 volts means fully charged. When it gets down to 3.2 volts it's about time to recharge. I think the lowest I've seen it go while still operating is 3.0 volts.

Nice video. I have the TM10K and I really like the buttons and display on the side. To look into the light, an ND filter for camera lenses works wonderfully. I have an ND 3.6 with which you can look wonderfully into a single LED with 4k lumens or into a TM10K with 10k lumens.

It's fairly good, and Nitecore are always well-made, but $300?! have they seen the competition?! Today I could buy a 16000 lumen Astrolux EC06 for £60, and that's a proper turbo mode, not just momentary, and 566m of throw. IMO a much better torch all round, I really don't know who spends that much on a light when they will be out of date next year anyway. Fixed battery packs are a deal-breaker to me, too. Great review though Jon, thanks!

Any light of this size with similar output will only be able to sustain that for a few seconds. Nitecore is one of the best when it comes to efficiency and heat dissapation and they made it a momentary mode because they know it won't be sustainable at that size. Nitecore is always pricey tho, I'll give you that

Yeh in australia its $500 and you can get a acebeam x50 for that price most these smaller lights get very hot even at 10k and dont last long at all in turbo. your better off getting a bigger light if your going to spend $500. it looks like they copied the Fenix 35r also.

I got out of the flashlight arms-race years ago. I've got a collection of fancy flashlights from that time, but "oh look this new one's even brighter" just isn't compelling to me anymore. I use a HDS Rotary with a clip I installed myself, and a Tain Ottavino as a backup rattling around in my pocket with other small tools. Before that I used a Jetbeam TC-R2, but sadly it got lost a few years ago.

But, it soon broke. It had generated so much heat when it was turned on. It had cost me several hundred dollars to purchased it. I loved it when it worked. People love to debate the merits of flashlights for self-defense, but in all honestly all you'll do is make your attacker angry. You can't keep shining it in their face while you're running away, because you have to look where you're going, so you'll have to turn it off and their vision will start recovering. If they're angry enough they'll beat the crap out of you for it.

I purchased the NEBO 12K, and, I'm greatly satisfied with it. I was seriously considering looking into this one, until Jon mentioned that run-time issue, when it's on TURBO. I really like the idea of such power in a hand-held, but, apparently that might be a bit too much power for overheating NOT to be a problem. I work security, and, when I need to see what's going on, there's nothing like that bring-the-daylight, to the entire area, w/o having to move your beam around, searching for whatever. Just the other night, I noticed a vehicle cruising slowly through the parking lot of the condos I patrol, with his lights off. He did exit the lot, made a right, but, only went a couple of feet, behind a brick wall, then stopped. On foot, I followed him, light in hand, but, not illuminated...didn't want to give prior warning that I was coming. Sure enough, as I turned, walked around the wall, we almost ran head-on into each other. I flipped on the NEBO (I leave it on HIGH), in his face, and, he literally jumped, then turned & ran back to his car, jumped in the drivers' seat, and scratched off, swerving up the hill, with his lights off, but, I could see his license plate easily. I'm almost certain that he was temporarily blinded, because, I'd already made the mistake, with a NEBO 6K, of accidentally turning it on, while pointed in my face.

These lights are like a loudness button on an amplifier or like a dragster: lots of power - for a short time. Lights this size with outputs of this magnitude will get hot very, very quickly and so they will mostly be used on more moderate power levels. Unless you use them to impress your neighbours of course, then the "crazy amount of light for a short time" will come in handy.

It's crazy where LED and battery technology has come to these days. I have a similarly ridiculous flashlight from aliexpress, bought it for thirty something dollars without batteries. That you can keep on however long you want because it has giant cooling grilles. Not as compact as this one, but I love it, I love flashlights. By today's standards my first flashlight back when I was a little boy, was a joke. You know, one of those little 6V incadescent bulbs, but I loved that one too.

Thanks for the review. I'm surprised that this torch sounded good to start with but by the end of your review I was rather disappointed in it. My needs would be in a search and rescue capacity and as a torch claiming to be a search tool it was very lacking on the throw and overall burn time for the higher output was pretty short. Very glad I watched your review.

@@JonGadget it could be good searching in forests with its wide beam but potentially the 20k will bounce back of the trees and foliage and ruin any hope of night vision. Its a shame as could have potential with that power but would need to be in a better configuration for me.

The Fenix LR35R has a similar form factor. It only has half the output on turbo (10,000 lumens) but it is rated at 500 yards. It is truly impressive. In my opinion, these super high intensity flashlights should be designed for more throw. Yes, they should be able to light up everything well at close range. But there's a practical limit to how much intensity of light you need right in front of you.

I have the larger Imalent R90TS and it is just perfect in my view for Search and Rescue, with a constant 10,000 lumens (very powerful and my main use) and its Turbo 35,000 lumens on Turbo. I use it for night walks on hills in Peak District (just done a video on Stanage Edge using it) videos do not do it justice)). and in Sherwood Forest. The R90TS is one of the worlds most powerful hand held (it is large don't get me wrong, I use shoulder strap and carry it for hours) throwers on the market with a 5 year guarantee and not cheap. For search and rescue, most def I would use. Note: I am 5'10' and quite a strong chap, used to carrying weight.

I like the lamp very much. The big point of criticism is the retaining clip. As with the TM10K, the attachment is poor. The small screws are too weak. After just 10 fastenings to the pants, the retaining clip slides to the left and right. It doesn't matter how tight you tighten the screws. The retaining clip should be in a recess in the upper area so that it does not loosen to the left and right. Nitecore definitely needs to revise this in the future!

I can appreciate the compact size of this rechargeable device, but I wish there was a way to leave it on at full power without some internal sensor detecting a heat overload and shutting it down. Many flashlights are now moving towards LED technology but that doesn't make them superior to more traditional rechargeables. I regularly carry a flashlight rated at 35,000 lumens, and never had any issues with it getting too hot to hold or having it shut down. I think I'll stick with the one I have.

I think it's decent walking flashlight. Most of us probably use low and mid most of the time, but I really wish the throw could be somewhere 500m range. I like how it operates though

Definitely taken from Fenix with the LR35R and added a few more bells and whistles.

If you want to see/film leds when in different modes try getting used cheap ND filters from 2nd hand camera shops.... Then use blue tak to fit 3 or 4 ND filters together... Then a bit more blue tak to fit the ND's to the filter thread of your camera lens... Then you should be able to point a mega flash light into your camera and see what LEDs do what. If you want a close up shot probably not a good idea to put the mega flash light close to your camera lens but use the camera zoom or zoom in post production. The NDs don't need to be same size as your camera lens.....so ones that are slightly bigger. 👍🏼

How long will it last on the brightest mode? I often ride in pitch dark conditions in the winter.

I was surprised to see that Nitecore decided to omit their signature OLED display on this model for some odd reason. That really was their main competitive advantage and since it's not present here, I say this model is a fail!

Can it be used for 2-3 hours without burning down the village? Otherwise it's only good underwater diving.

Our apartment house is a bit uphill and it happens oftens that taxi/delivery or randos park in front of it with their distance lamp on - so me returning on foot now in late autumn or winter home when it is pitchblack outside is a very unpleasant experience seeing only the holy lights that lures me into afterlife.... which flashlight that fits into my laptop carry bag should I choose to reciprocate? Any favorite pocket xray that wont ruin my budget?

Great review. Body design is similar to some Fenix lights, such as the LR35R.

a handheld torch works and yet obsolete considering head gear torches and cell phone flashlights. Nonetheless, thank you for your expertise...building my compact survival pouch recommended by you, Jono. Cheers Mate!

Cell phone flashlights are are better than nothing, but are useless for most tasks that you'd need a legitimate flashlight for.

How do you confirm the manufacturers output claims? Do you use a light box? Most lumen claims are being proven false lately.

Is there such a thing as too bright? the flood and spot at 1800 seemed very good, whereas 20000 seemed glaring. Is there a sweet spot in light, range and field of view or is it all down to personal preference?
@JonGadget

flood and spot are actually pretty good - 20K would light up a church! quite niche I think this one - nice in the hand though!
