Not only perfectly showing the game.. but to stage such an entertaining match as well? I applaud your efforts.

That withdrawing rule is incredible! And the ability to flip over cards can really change the tides of war so fast. Great playthrough!

Fantastic video! Just want to mention that the cards used in this video come from the original edition as opposed to the revised edition. It's not a big deal since the game rules and card powers are functionally identical between the two versions. However, if you're wondering why the specific card wordings in your version might vary from those in this video... well, now you know why!

I saw that one of the biggest differences was moving some "general rules" onto the card texts where it's relevant, which just feels smart for sparing the players' memories
@DrMcFly282 жыл бұрын
@@metallsnubben Actually there's a rather important difference - the new rules do not recognize "interrupts" anymore, i.e. each card gets fully resolved before another card effect's gets to trigger, even if that card was revealed during the execution of that effect, and even if it creates delayed effects.

Love this game, and especially that you can take it with you anywhere! I once played it on a park bench with a friend while we waited for something.

I'm traumatized from the time I played a card game in the garden and a sudden gust of wind scattered cards as far as the eye could see, but with the right conditions that's awesome lol

I played this a few weeks ago and the first game was over in 2 rounds because I had no idea what I was doing. 2nd game was closer but a big part I didn't appreciate was strategic withdrawal. You did a perfect job explaining that concept.

Just stumbled upon this now. A fantastically comprehensive tutorial of what is, in my humble opinion, an ingenious micro-game. Jon, I sense from your tactical knowledge that you've played many times and that you enjoy the thought processes involved. I believe this is a brilliant video -- I note that Jon Perry, the game's designer also thinks so -- and I'd like to thank you for uploading. Please take care and stay safe.

Glad you enjoyed it. Very cool to hear the designer likes how this shows the game as well!

What a great job you did in communicating just how tactical this game can be! We are glad to have this one in our collection, & for the price you typically see this one selling for, I can't imagine a better value to be found elsewhere.

Quite a tight game, very exciting. It's especially ironic that the Escalation card that initially seemed would have no effect since you weren't planning on playing any cards face down ended up being the key to victory. I know I said you didn't need to refilm, but I still appreciate you putting in the effort. Tactics wise, my instinct is that 6 value cards should be played last to both undersell your strength and to minimize the opponents ability to flip them, so I'm always surprised when you play them first. On the other hand, I'm terrible at poker (i.e. at bluffing and at reading opponents) so maybe my instinct is completely wrong!
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
Your instinct may be better than mine, I imagine the right answer is that sometimes they should be played late and sometimes early. If you have lots of flipping maybe you play it early knowing you can flip it face-up again if your opponent flips it down. Slow rolling with them in your hand makes sense if you want to milk more points, but I can also see throwing them down early to try and scare the opponent away. I think it'll really be player dependent. I agree that the escalation ending up deciding victory was an especially fitting end :)

Great video and great job showing the variability of this game. Annoyingly NOT what happened at GenCon 2021 this past September. Had the sales person actually done what you did instead of giving me a scripted demo, they would have EASILY made the sale. That was a missed opportunity, but I guess I can find it somewhere. Keep up the great work, Jon!

I really like the idea of having Escalation and putting down high cards _face_ _down_ , trying to bait the opponent into flipping the "4's" only to have turned them into 6's And very cool how the early surrender option encourages that kind of stupidly elaborate plan, anything to avoid Just Playing The Good Card
@GettingGames2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! It's a fun way to try and be sneaky/creative with the options given to you by luck of the draw.

What a great playthrough, you're very good at this! Sadly, I don't think this war theme would appeal to my wife. It seems like this could be themed in multiple ways, though, so maybe the developer could capitalize on the play system (like Pandemic did) and apply it to other themes, like medieval, Western, Civil War, even non-battle themes like wildlife habitats, dragons, maybe even sports. The possibilities are endless!

Critters at war is exactly the same game but rethemed.

When playing sea card ‘1’ (Transport) and using ability ‘you may move 1 of your cards to a different theatre’ would that card’s ability trigger again after being moved?
@GettingGames Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played this game to remember the rules enough to answer your question. Sorry about that!
@edikoco Жыл бұрын
@@GettingGames Thanks for your reply. I have subsequently found from the designer that moving a card from one theatre to another does not re-trigger their ability.
@Catchafire20003 ай бұрын
@@edikocoWhen you move a card, does it go to the top or the bottom? I think it makes more sense to only move an uncovered card.

Is the sound a bit muted? 24:30 I think I would have flipped his Battleship. Take the lead in the Sea. I guess that would have been a worse play than yours!

The sound here wasn't changed vs the rest of my videos, so hypothetically it should match.

Your patreons have a sense of humor! This must've been hard to film, since so much of the game depends on not knowing what your opponent is holding. However you managed that, it came off realistically.
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
I actually had to film and edit this video two separate times because the first time I botched the scoring rules entirely. So I got quite a bit of practice and I do think the second recording went even better.

Nice playthrough. This is not a game for my wife and me. We dont generally have a problem with direct conflict games, but this one with some cards "undoing" the plans of your opponent, just isnt fun for us.
@timoseppa91243 жыл бұрын
I don't really understand why that would affect you more than, say, playing a card that directly affects your opponent negatively. What I would say is that there are a lot of cascading effects. Maybe a bit too much for my liking. Seems more special to me if there are less effects, mixed in with more straight forward plays. Would increase AP thinking through all of those logical chains, I would think. And given that - Seems like not enough variety in the cards. Seems like a solid idea for a quick war themed game but I feel like it could have been executed better.
