One thing that helps in the US for everything being more efficient is that everyone knows how much cost their time. Starting from basic jobs, people are paid by the hour, so if you have to go and stand on a line for half an hour or whatever, you know the cost of that. Salaries in Chile work differently, so people have a harder time grasping the value of their time, which I think causes that people just take things how they are. It's funny how we see things in a different way regarding housing. I HATE in the US that the option of how to style, decorate, and equip a house is taken away from me. When you rent you can barely make the place your own. You do sacrifice that in spite of some practicality, which is a common trend in many things here.
@JonGrossGringo
@JonGrossGringo 4 жыл бұрын
Gonzalo Jimenez that’s interesting!!!!!!! I’ve never thought of renting a house like you just said but man that makes a lot of sense! Interesting about being paid by the hr too! I think that does explain a lot of why it works the way that it does in the states.

Jon Gross I heard this kind of phrase from obnoxious people way too many times when I lived in SF ‘I make $150, $200 (whatever triple digit number you wanna insert here) and can’t be here in the line waiting for my coffee 😡’ Renting is ridiculously limited in the US. That was one of the reasons why I couldn’t bring my dog with me. Many places wouldn’t accept tenants with dogs. In Chile it still feels like your place and you can do as much as you want as long as the property is not damaged.

Uncle Juan, being a Chilean American i can attest to the eternal waiting in lines in Chile. Things are worst now with the “pandemic” but whether pandemic or not we do make things difficult. In that little glimpse you shared of Starken I saw a sign that read “cash only”. We make things difficult and oddly enough people like standing in lines. We complain about it, but if we really didn’t like it we’d, like you said, not use those services. Banks, grocery stores, etc don’t feel the need to streamline and optimize because customers always come back.

I love my country, Chile. I left it when I was a child, but what I don't like about it is that the laws are very bad, people still don't know how to respect others. education is excellent but what I dislike the most is the laws and the police. I'm living in California for 40 years now and I love it. I don't think I would return to my beautiful Chile ever again, here my parents died and here I will have to die. My children are from here, my nephews are from here and my sisters, the only country they know is the US. so here I stay.

@Shispirina where ? in USA ? you really do not know anything about education if you did not know there was a survey and it was recognized that the United States of America has the worst education in the world. So what are you talking about? And I show it to you when I arrived in this country to California I came for grade 6 and they gave me a test and they passed me to grade 8 and not because of intelligent but because in my country Chile they teach much better than here. So what are you talking about? I grew up here and believe me what I know about my country and what I learned here is not even half of what I knew back then. So before to defend something first look and find out. because you look very bad, master uses but I do not like to lie. and reality has many good things, but in education we are really very, very bad.

In my experience, most places are rented with furniture. I live in Valdivia. I would love a video with the sentences that you have gotten wrong. I feel like I haven't said a lot of embarassing things in English, but I guess it's because I have watched a lot of tv shows in English and I have picked up things from there and I actually studied English. And btw, Starken is not always so bad. I think it's because people are ordering more stuff online due to the pandemic. Cheers!

Hi Jon, Thanks for sharing your experience in my beautiful Chile. I can share my experience here in Wisconsin being a Chilean guy and man please don’t feel that those things are a mistake. Specially not knowing Spanish before. I was in the same shoes and it was tough but at the same time now that I feel extremely comfortable speaking, reading and writing it was a beautiful experience for me. Of course I would love to have known English before moving here, but it is life and we deal with it and learn and feel how pleasant is to achieve something that you never thought to achieve. Now I laugh about my mistakes of miss pronouncing something and millions things that I did while learning, but it is an experience and now I can share that with my future kids and laugh. Also even in my own native language I don’t know 100% the words. Hey Jon the other thing that I felt goose bumps is when you were looking apartments/houses in Oconomowoc. I don’t know if that was randomly or you actually lived there, but the thing is that was my very first town when I moved here from Chile. Thanks again Jon for sharing and my best good vibes for you is never feel mad with yourself because we never stop learning and that makes this world awesome! Cheers my friend from here Wisconsin!!

Jon Gross hahahahaha. Yes it is cool. My wife came to Chile during her high school time and later when she was in college. She applied for student exchange program to learn Spanish and we met in Valparaiso. I am original from Viña Del Mar. She graduated in got her first job in Oconomowoc right in front of Target DC. That is how when I finally got my visa to move with my wife we were renting an apartment right between Lake La belle and Fowler Lake. We love that town and we had awesome memories in that town. Now we live in the outside of Madison. Because we love how fun and family friendly is that city and so many fun events that I love to go. Really cool man. I would love same day me can meet anywhere and share and laugh about our stories. Cheers my friend!!

This is a 2-minute video, tops, stretched to almost 13 minutes. He starts talking about the topic at 4:30: 1) Not studying enough Spanish before arriving (Oh really? Would never have figured that out) 2) Rental houses do not come with countertops, appliances (k) 3) You need to be humble about embarrassing yourself with language (obviously) 4) Sports are different, you know, they play futbol (why would this be a surprise?) 5) You need to be patient. Things take longer to do.

Having to turn down potentially AMAZING apartments in Santiago because I didn't have the money to buy a fridge and stove was a huge pain in the neck. I still don't understand why renters need to own huge, expensive appliances that we need to drag around the city every time we move. Thankfully every place I've seen so far has had countertops hahaha

Hello Jon... I agree. The things that you are talking about are correct. Chile is a very special country, even more if you live in Linares. Maybe, Santiago could be worst for you. A lot of improvization and disorder, waiting 2 hours in a line is a little moment. We don't speak Spanish, we speak Chilean and when we do it, it's so fast for a foreigner. But, we are changing and people learn with comments like yours. Chilean people are friendly and we think that Americans are nice and funny people... Thanks for sharing!!!

You are right, Chile takes too much time in everything you do, and don't talk about banking. Here in The States and Canada (where I live), a bank, branch or not, they do everything for the customer. In Chile, the same bank doesn't do everything, so you have to ambulate from Bank to Bank and do the "line up" at every single bank you go, that is INSANE!!! They wear watches but never use it, it is only for decoration; t,he don't believe in appointments, our way, so the say" "around" that it can mean 1 or 2 hours late !@#@!@#

It's called Football and was always called football. If anything the USA should rename their sport to soccer and I have some good reasons why: 1. You throw the ball or 'Sock it' to each other. (Like Rugby) The British invention 'Football' you ONLY kick it or 'Foot' the ball! 2. American football came long after Football was invented so why do the inventors have to change their name? anyway thanks for sharing this invaluable video content :)

Hello there; one more thing you should know before publishing your comments is..... we Chileans are very very proud of our country, talking against it, it's going to make you loose friends. One question first.,,, what are you doing there for fucking 5 years!!! If you don't like it? And on top of everything, make a sequence of all the things you wish you have known before going to Chile. Why you didn't do it before going there? Why did you go to a little town ? Are you hiding from something or someone? Do you want THEM to speak English? Don't be lazy and learn something in life. Do not dare to speak bad about any of my towns or my people. We are extremely good, honest and naive people, don't abuse us. Even in our songs we spread our love and naïveté. "Y verás como quieren en Chile al amigo que es forastero". DONT shame us, it's no right,

Broder just get a Chileno to share with you, and have a conversation with that weon.. i don't think you speak any Castellano brou. It's not Spanish it's Castilian. Saying Spanish is like saying Chinese. Which one, Mandarin or Cantonese or what . Just learn the language. We have empty unfurnished apartments and condos and rental houses without furniture if you didn't ask if it's furnished, in local English. You're talking about international living. It's universal. Stay humble. Your problems are not Chile's problems weon poyito

In other words you wish you haven't been so ignorant about Chile which is not surprising if you are from the United States. 2 hours to get a package at Starkes, so? I've waited more than that to get a package at the US Postal Service! That english is not widely spoken in Linares?! where do you think you are?! you aren't in a US territory or colony. Yes, soccer is the main and favorite sport not only in Chile but in Southamerica....hello?! Waiting too long to get your papers, residence, etc.?! really, how long? I had to wait almost 7 hours and go back more than once just to prove that I won't be living off the government here in the USA. Maybe is time for Chile to start getting tought and make it hard for non-speaking spanish foreigners to live and work in the country.

The problem with the language is the same for people who move to USA. All problems you have in Linares- Chile, happens to all of us in USA, unless you live in a small Town, but go and try to get a Drivers Lincense in a City and you will see how much time is going to take you. In USA there is only 3 popular sports Baseball, Basketball and Football (not Soccer) and the rest are not popular and only a minority practice them, same thing happens in Chile, you can practice Soccer but the rest of the sport are not so popular. Don't cry baby remember is other Country and you got to get use how thing are done, is going to happens in Germany, France, Canada, etc.

One of the things I wish I had known is that many Chileans never like to tell you "no", even when they know that will not do a job or provide a service for you. People like plumbers or builders are very unprofessional. You will waste so much time with people telling you they will do something and then they never do it, they will not show up and they will just ignore your phone calls when you try and call them . This is very common, they will hardly ever say "no I am too busy, I can't help you" It is like they are afraid to say no, so they will say yes and then pretend they will take your business or do the job for you, but then don't show up and won't give you an explanation or answer your calls. I honestly don't care if you can't provide me a service, but why not just say no in the first place and don't be so immature and not answer phone calls when you don't show up, it is quite pathetic to be honest. I am sorry if this offends anyone, but it is not just me that complains about this thing, many Chilean friends do too.
