The Dusky, Fiordland New Zealand

Did the Dusky in march 1988. Starting at West Arm (Lake Manapouri) to Dusky Sound; from Dusky Sound to Lake Hauroko; from Lake Hauroko back to West Arm. Lots of mud, windfall, steep climbs, rain, snow on Centre Pass. In total 12 days on the track, including a hutday at Dusky-sound (fishing), and a hutday at Lake Roe (climbing Mount Tamatea). Tough hike , but I was in pretty good shape at that time. So nice to see this vid, brings back a lot of memories, thanks for uploading. Back in 1988, that's 36 years ago, you could not imagine that in 2024 there would be something like internet and youtube, and you can relive this hike in a comfortable chair !

I have been on the Dusky Track back in 1996 and it was one of the best tracks you can find in New Zealand. Thanks for that beautiful film. It brings back so many memories. Great work!

@@JonHiclimb What's interesting is that when I did this in 1977 we flew in to the west arm and walked out at the power station. 10 days and no rain.

I really enjoyed watching your Dusky adventure! It was very interesting and informative. I learned a lot from you. Those three-wire bridges look really challenging. Never encountered them in my backpacking trips. Did anybody ever have feet slip off the wire while crossing? My friend and I are heading back to NZ from Colorado in January and are planning on making the Dusky our main adventure. Great video!

Hi George, so glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful for your future trip. No, nobody slipped on the 3 wires and they are probably more secure than they look. Hope you enjoy the dusky, its tough, but so rewarding. A stunning part of the world. Colorado's not too shabby either with all those 14,000ers.

Great video. Fiordland is not for the faint heart6. It will catch you out or kill you if you are not prepared.

how do you dry your boots, or you just tramp in those soggy boots. Great video

I just tramp in soggy boots. Its surprising how little they seem wet after an hour or so and it really doesn't feel a problem unless its super cold. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the feedback
