12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM: I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties. The first version was sung by a youthful Judy Collins. I had yet to hear the songwriter’s version. Having heard the story behind the lyrics from Joni at a concert at a concert in the early seventies, added many layers with more than a little gravitas and emotion. I’m a nutshell, Joni Mitchell is a treasure!

My wife died on the 14th the day before our 52 wedding anniversary after a battle with cancer. We both loved Joni Mitchell, her music was the sound track to our first years of married life. I mourn my wife but this has taken me back to those first days when all that mattered was loving each other and dreaming of the future. Joni, thank you for bringing back those memories.

To everyone saying that she’s lost it, she shouldn’t be there: how much guts does it take for a 79-year-old Joni Mitchell to get up on stage, knowing that she’ll be compared to her 25-year-old self? That’s what performing is about: showing up and making it work with everything you’ve got. Who cares if her voice isn’t perfect? Her heart is.

It was at this festival in 1966 that Judy Collins introduced Joni Mitchell to her audience. Collins was the first to cover and record Both Sides Now and made Mitchell's song a huge hit. To me, what makes this song and Mitchell so iconic was that she had as a 23 year old the ability to write with such profound insight what for most us is only gained over many years and realized by 79 year olds, like her .... now. I first heard her sing it as a 25 year old. I marveled at its insights then and as a 79 year oldster in a few weeks ... still.

When, in 2015, she suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, I, like so many of us, was utterly devastated. It looked like she would never be able to sing again. She sung this song so beautifully here and last night at the 2024 Grammy's, brought tears to my eyes now and last night as well. Peace and love!

How can one get through that without tears streaming down one's face? Don't ask me, I couldn't do it. Exquisite.
