The album, self-produced by Joni in a time when female producers weren't really a thing, "Edith" is a painting in sound. You'll discover new colors with every listen. _Hissing_ was rejected critically by the music press in 1975, critics didn't know what to make of the album or a self-producing female artist like Joni. She was famously depressed by the reaction. But _Hissing_ has been gaining in popularity &, just this month, the album reached #6 on Billboard's vinyl sales chart.

I think the place she recorded 13 of her albums, including this one, had something to do with it. A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood is an interesting place. It was built as Charlie Chaplin's movie studio, later used by A&M Records for many popular artists, including Joni, before it was bought by Jim Henson to become the home of the Muppets. It' was also investigated by Ghost Hunters as it showed how it was indeed haunted by some mysterious guests. Now the building is up for sale again.

Her previous album was more commercial, accessible. This was more experimental, more angular in places, it's special. Her next one "Hejira" is just as iconic. I hope at some point you'll give the criminally overlooked 5th album "For the Roses" a listen.

It always seemed like a story of a pimp-like guy. And cocaine is alluded to:"He tilts their tired faces gently to the spoon..."

great joni track off a great album. It never fails to amaze me ,how ahead of her time she was in the 70s.Time to react to something from Don juans reckless daughter. Anything would do but my favourite is, Talk to me ,a hilarious track about Bob Dylan, with unbelieveable bass guitar from jaco Pastorius. Thanks😊

Superb Album - the way that she puts the onus on women for where they find themselves, instead of always being the victim

The Kingpin is used to having a good time with the local girls and then discarding them, but Edith is different, she means more to him.

I never looked into it, but I always thought the Kingpin referred to someone running a criminal mob. And of course, with crime comes drugs and prostitution, with things like "the spoon". But, the music makes everything enchanting, along with Joni's vocals. I saw a full documentary on PBS about Joni's life, and she learned about jazz singing through female crooners in 1940s movies.

Beautiful voice and instrumentation. Like Sufjan and Prince. And Stephen of the Duffy. All three love Joni. After teen heavy metal and early 80s prog, Joni's band LPs were a chance to venture to new landscapes. Class LP!

Love the vibe of this with the soft horn motif. The way she sings huuuuumming its delivered effortlessly no one is over playing just blissful. Thanks for explaining the lyrics I always assumed she was the favourite of some gangsters "girls" but you point out well they are both big players in their own worlds and attraction and respect is in the air. Nice one JP

Hi Justin, yes you did get it, good description. I grew up listening to Joni. She is it, particularly when you describe the rhythmic echoes, she used her voice like no other, a gift. That & the pure descriptive power of her lyrics just soak you into the lush imagery of her storytelling. I love HoSL, I probably already mentioned the title track is my favorite song on that album.

The "Kingpin," was Jose Feliciano. The song is a cocaine binge in progress as the walls are "humming some mysterious songs" Romantic and -snow blind-) The album's title reflects a visit by Joni to Feliciano's home, spending time with his wife at the time- the hissing of summer lawns . . . Feliciano's lawn. The special thing about Joni's storytelling, is that she tells on herself as much as she tell on others. Feliciano, arrived in L.A. in the late 60's- early 70's, before he recorded his cover of the Doors, "Light My Fire."

Very good reaction, as usual. It's about a relationship that's electric, as it were, but also fraught with danger, probably especially for the young Edith. Look at the lyrics more closely and you will find one of the most original and elaborate rhyme schemes I can think of in popular song--it exerts a subtle influence on how you understand the relationship she is portraying.

The bitterest medicine is coated in the sweetest sugar. Such a beautiful and dark, dark song. In my mind, the big man is a local strong man. He uses women and gets them hooked on coke. Is he a pimp? A drug lord? Whatever he is, it isn't good. They are circling each other. Both battling a strong attraction. It isn't likely to end well for one of them and I think that one is going to be Edith.

Try "Stephen Bishop /Red Cab to Manhattan" if you like the aor side of rock (with Art Garfunkel). Or "Laura Nyro / New York Tendaberry" if you want to taste the most intimate relationship to New York in the Sixties. Voice & Piano.

One of Joni’s very best,in my opinion. I think it’s about a drug baron picking out a prostitute(Edith) at a brothel, then getting her hooked on something. Still sounds gorgeous though

A song of many layers! Joni was a great observer of characters and situations which fueled her lyrics. As I recall, she'd indicated she developed Edith as a character loosely based on Edith Piaff (sp?) Billie Holiday, and others of that ilk, women who were amazingly talented but "trapped and controlled" by the kingpin types, pushed into drug use/addiction by the kingpins etc. .. As others have indicated, the live version evokes even more emotion IMHO, and that version by Tina Turner/Herbie Hancock is amazing as well. The song paints quite a picture of that time in music history and reflection of life in general, while still sadly being applicable in today's world, a reflection of those trapped in extreme poverty and other tragic circumstances.

Me, I'm looking forward to Shades Of Scarlett Conquering, one of Joni's very greatest songs. A few years ago I was listening to the album while doing my food shopping in Sainsbury's, and I almost lost my composure at the start of the second verse, as the string section comes in. That'll be the title of my memoir: Undone By Joni Mitchell In Sainsbury's.
