Legendary Joni. Iconic. Her Court and Spark among my top five albums of all time. Must listen from start to finish. That's a very young Pat Metheny on guitar with his buddy Lyle Mays (RIP) on keyboards. She hired them for this gig. I saw Metheny first in 1980 at a jazz festival with Lyle and the band. I was floored. This young guy whirling around the stage with numerous guitars, Lyle's sweet piano breaks. I've been a fan ever since. He's won dozens of Grammy Awards, legendary in his own way. Too many tracks to suggest you listen to. Best to you both! /M.

This band toured with her in the early eighties. I saw them in Providence, RI in a large area. Pat Metheny on guitar, Lyle Kays on keys, as you mentioned, and the late great Jaco Pastorius on bass, and Don Alias on drums and percussion. Absolute Monsters, every one!

Awesome performance and great reaction! I saw Joni back in 1975 at Symphony Hall in Boston Massachusetts. Her back up band was the “LA Express” Los Angeles California jazz musicians (Robin Ford on guitar). You said it sounded a bit jazzy, yes she moved from her earlier days of folk into more of a jazz realm. Her album Court and Spark a great listen to with jazz greats Joe sample (keyboard) and Larry Carton (guitar), Tom Scott (woodwinds).

For her first live album, (Miles of Aisles) rather than assemble a band she simply got Tom Scott and the L. A. Express (hot jazz ensemble of the day) to tour with her. For this tour (from which we got her second live album, Shadows and Light), she got the Pat Metheny Band to back her, another hot jazz group. Both albums are stellar.

The one and only time i got to see Joni Mitchell perform live was during this tour for her album, Mingus. "Shadows and Light" was the name of the concert film, and a unique, acapella track from her Hissing of the Summer Lawns album a few years before. "Amelia" from the same concert is simply magical. ❤

Great choice…the entire concert is wonderful to watch…and just so you know the lead guitarist on this video is a young Pat Metheny, with Lyle Mays on Keyboard and Jaco Pastorius on Bass. I adore Joni, and I love this song - although she's such an elite artist that I wouldn't even put it in her top 30 songs. *That's* how great she is. Joni Mitchell is a great Canadian-American singer songwriter. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "The Circle Game", "Both Sides Now", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.
