What a professional, [1:57] she didn't even miss a beat having things thrown at her. Apparently it could have been worse, that deluge of ice hit a glass of water too and shattered it with shards flying up to her face. She was put on between Bryan Adams and U2 when the crowd were expecting a set from Pete Townsend of The Who, he couldn't make it, so that's what the chanting was about. The irony is this concert was in aid of those fighting for peace and a voice to be heard. Distressing but she reacted with calm, composure and humour. She and husband Larry went out in the evening and New Yorkers were very kind to her. An Italian restaurant owner came out and said," On behalf on New York we are sorry! Come in, we'll make you a nice dinner!"

The audience's poor behavior only magnifies the brilliance of "Hejira". So much to read into Joni's expressions in that intro, just splendid!

Joni one of the coolest musician/artist/poet/producers ever to have been on this Earth , a real Goddess that the younger artists now could learn a thing or two from , no over the top parade , dancers , staging, lighting , costumes just RAW charisma and talent , love and deeply respect this wonderful artist ;D

I was just listening to this on cassette, I recorded this. Wish the crowd would shut up and listen, and that's what she's thinking during the first song. Love her forever.

You can't see it on the video but everyone who was there remembers Bill Graham jumped down the stage to beat the shit of the guy who threw that can of beer at Joni and get him kicked out of there.

Thanks for viewing and commenting. Was not aware of that, but it was well deserved. Joni soldiered on, much to her credit.

Seriously ? Bill Graham would definitely do that.

Probably my favorite live performance I’ve heard of hers. Three songs discussing the cruelty of the human experience in our time. A rough crowd’s greatly rude behavior, slowly, but not completely being hypnotized as they quieted down more. (At least that what I inferred from the contrast of how you could barely hear her at the beginning to how shining her ‘Hejira’ is.) ‘The Three Great Stimulants’ is perfect for Amnesty International. ‘Number One’ in this given situation is her most ironic song. ‘Hejira’, her magnum opus, just her voice, her guitar and Larry Klein’s Bass playing is so lovely. Running away with honor in the cruel human experience yearning for love and escapism. Worth mentioning her change of lyrics… “I keep the hours and the company..NOT you” and “Listen..I thought I heard Miles Davis coming through the trees.” Side note: She was especially beautiful that night, as if she wasn’t before. Yeah, its great. Everyone that night was.

The nerve of the presenter to introduce her as the previous musician's wife. Like she wasn't a huge name in music at that time already.

That is a great point I had not considered before, thanks for viewing and commenting. The first gentleman was a popular MTV Personality at the time, whose first name I believe was Mark. Second on stage into was Bill Graham, master promoter overseeing the show.

The disrespect this amazing woman has had to endure. As said here, the professional that she is she kept the show on the road. Concert organisers and many involved with the production crew should look back in shame - persistent audio gremlins, background feedback and a cameraman on stage wearing..... white! What the ........? Cheap operators for an organisation that's now somewhat questionable despite claiming a noble cause as it's raison d'être. Shame upon shame. The greatest female singer songwriter ever if I'm not mistaken, a voice to die for, and that unique guitar style! Nevertheless a worthy edition to the live material of this legend, thanks for sharing it.
