It's so interesting to me how common the 'characters live together in a mansion' premise was for fanworks in general back then back then. Obviously there's the all the Sonic sprite videos you mentioned, but I also vividly remember a *lot* of Smash Bros fanfiction that had the characters all living together in a mansion owned by Master Hand and Crazy Hand. I guess it's because it was an easy excuse to have all the characters in the same place, but it's interesting to me; it was always *specifically* a mansion.

i once saw a tumblr post that said "i think those 13 y/o fanfiction writers back in 2012 really created the perfect formula and we just ignored them. like maybe all we need is just a bunch of our favourite characters chilling together in one big house. maybe that’s all we need" and they were spitting

I straight up cried when I saw this comment. I vividly remember reading these and it was probably what made me realize I'm not straight. Some real embarassing and rather problematic ships though, there was this one called Camp Smash that I remember reading, that reached 20 chapters and got updated as late as 2019 and never again, which characterized Villager as an ax-crazy yandere femboy for Toon Link, Mewtwo as a terribly aged puerto-rican stereotype, and Kirby as an evil dark lord (which honestly isn't funny).

I didnt grow up with this but I did watch a similar series in spanish but with surprisingly good drawings and voice acting, Episode 1 was practically just Shadow buys a mansion, it eventually also introduced Nazo too. As for the edgy humor it highly depends, I think the gay and fat jokes are super tame and I dont think theres any reason to feel offended over them because they're so inherently childish, but even though Im still edgy at heart I also understand why certain other jokes are considered offensive to others.

Dated as they may be, I still absolutely adore this series. This was a perfect overall retrospective and really took me back to when I was 6, watching these videos and Sonic Paradox on my mom's personal computer after school. In retrospect I really shouldn't have been watching these at all but I have no regrets.

it's funny hearing how someone stumbled upon these as a kid. I was in my teens around this time and I even made my own Sonic sprite OC that nobody will ever find. But like you'd never think other people especially kids would come across this stuff mainly because this was still old KZbin so the only people you think would only watch these are like you, the creator, and your friends/peers.

While I never watched this series specifically, I still remember watching a *bunch* of different Sonic Sprite videos back when I was younger While I don't remember much of them, but I do remember those iconic Speakonia voices almost to a T and a few of the fan sprites that were consistent in a lot of these! A few different animations of this genre I remember had something to do with Sonic getting a red ring of death while Antoine was also there for some reason, Sonic getting a chao and training it to get into Chao Karate and, of course the most 2000s/early 2010 thing ever, Shadow killing Dora the Explorer (Hell, I still remember talking about the video to friends at school after seeing that one) I'm very glad to see that there are other people out there who have experienced these videos in one way or another and that it wasn't just a weird fever dream I had while at my friend's house Good video! Hope you have a good one!

Your video unlocked so many early and mid 2000's memories. I remember watching this videos over and over not only those from coodoo but also from other people's (for some reason I distinctly remember one of Amy getting cloned and looking for Sonic and there being a bunch of OCs in it lol). I definitely watched these videos when I was way to young to really understand the jokes and even the language (english isn't my first language) yet they hold a special place as fond memories from when I was a kid discovering the internet for the first time and getting introduced to the sonic franchise as a whole

What a lovely retrospective! Awesome work. I'm glad that an incredibly niche era of KZbin has been documented extensively. Watching this made me quite sentimental, realizing just how long ago these sprite videos were first uploaded... and grateful all the same, knowing that they fostered such a creative community and enduring friendships. What a wild ride it's been.
@samuelwetz8378

Yes! Another Niche era that I love was one where someone took footage of Sonic cutscenes mixed it with movies (one of them was with Ghostbusters and one of the 90s Scooby Doo movies) and some of them would also have Garfield and Slimer and Stay Puft from the animated Ghostbusters show. they had text dialogue and that would be how the characters would interact with each other.

Heya, a former sprite video creator here, who created Pokémon EX back in the day. This was a fun watch for someone like me who was heavily involved in the sprite video community back in the day. I still remember watching videos from people such as BFGPrime/MidnightPrime who made Sonic Gaian (which someone has achieved the 1st season on KZbin) , Shadnic17, Roushutsu, supersonic47, dadarcnyt523/PlatinumRhythm, Brawlfan1, CMtheWolf321, AdamsWii, clayman01, youdakid91, Zookstar1000, RazortheWind, Charlottezxz and many others. Even though I've barely kept in touch with a lot of the people who I've met throughout my time working on them (and some I'm no longer friends with due to personal reasons), it was a really fun time for me and helped reignite my creative spark. I wish I hadn't taken down all my sprite videos and deleted them, apart from the one episode I reuploaded. I thought they'd be cringe for me looking back on them, but nowadays they would've been quite nostalgic for me and a good way to see how far I've come since then. I don't know if someone out there has saved them, but give me a shout if anyone somehow has them. Thanks for making this trip down memory lane!

I'm not saying you shouldn't have acknowledged the dated jokes or not have given a content warning, those are great for this stuff, just that it was kinda needless to have to explain edgy humor again tho, i still really liked the video and love your content, just felt like saying this since u asked for feedback on this

Coodoo17 was actually my 2nd sprite channel. There was one I found prior under a SuperSonic username where the hedgehogs go camping and the Chaotix follow them resulting in Charmy burning it down as well as one where Silver gets a job at Burger King but it's the actual plot of the video rather than being the narrative point to drive another type of plot The channel is long gone though, I recall it vanished soon after I found it but I had already moved onto Coodoo by that point

Man, 2000s internet was such a wild time. I remember looking into the edgier stuff because I wanted to feel like I wasn't a baby anymore so not only did I get into content that is more violent like video games, movies, and TV shows, but also the "independent" content that I want to call that goes all in on their tone and humor. In this area, I was a huge follower of Sonic that I was willing to watch anything that had Sonic involved even if it was parodies. Looking back at it, it was a bit of a cringe time along with the content I've been looking at, but I can't simply reject it all because that's who I was and how I became who I am to this day. The Sonic fandom, while it does create cringe, will always amaze me at how the fans interact with the franchise and I couldn't ask for anything more. coodoo17, 12gameschamp21, even Alvin-Earthworm for Super Mario Bros Z, thank you for what you have done not just for me but for your targeted communities.

I was raised by these videos, I must of watch them around the late 00s and early 2010s. But oh my god I had a obsession with these videos, where it be coodoo, 12gameschamp21 or anyone else that made them, this was my jam. Granted I was very young at the time so a lot of the edgy jokes in it went way over my head. One time my dad saw me one time watching them, I had headphones on so he was very confused of why I watching a screen with still images and nothing going on it. And said something to me like "why are you laughing at a still image there is nothing going on". But yeah they were very much a product of its time with how things were done and all. But never the less still interesting to look back on.

Daaaang this video hit me in the face with a truck-load of nostalgia! I used to make sprite vids like this back in the day under the name Clayman01. I made a series called Sonic and Pals and then later on another series called Annoyed and the Annoying which btw some of the episodes of the latter has over 1 million views the last time I checked which really surprised me. I do feel embarrassed looking back at them cause I was 14 to 16 at the time when I did them (Including my crappy voice acting xD) But I can't deny that I have great memories (and maybe a few bad ones) of those times and some of the good friends I made there. Some i'm even still in contact with to this very day. Great vid! :3

I think even today the humor is funny. Many marginilized and targeted groups found comfort in these videos because at the time, we were all like 12-16ish and this was our way to laugh at ourselves. It was like old school family guy and I know what you mean, today it seems really mean an punching down; but it wasn't and if it were, thats why many people found it funny including the people he made fun of just like family guy. I loved your review, I was wondering what someone as old as me thought of these timeless videos and it's awesome you got to have your name in the end credits. Biggity boom.

Coodoo will always be the number-one pick for Sprite videos. Also, I do enjoy Maple Riot videos too. It's like if Coodoo and Mark Haynes (aka the creator of Mario Bros Z) worked together.

Also if there was a MASSIVE spike in popularity for these things again, I have the feeling that there would be someone who would manage to make an AI do it for us.

oh, I'm still watching them every now and then. Shade the hedgehog was my favorite. I think my favorite series was the one with Sonic and Master Chief, though it seems nowadays all the episodes are gone (except part 4 of Master Chief's Christmas Ep.7)... :/
