Great video! Some info some people might not know: Viz Video, also known as VIZ Media now, is owned by Shopro, who produces the Pokemon anime. And VIZ LLC combined with Shopro's US brand to make VIZ Media. Which makes a lot of sense how they always deal with the books and anime.

19:35 I think what may you feel weird with the animation may be the level of quality, like how fluid and expressive the characters are drawn. The japanese anime is mostly drawn in limited animation, meaning little movement in most shots like for example only 2-6 individual drawn frames in talking shots and even if there are more complex action shots, they still only have around 10-12 drawn frames per second, the bare minimum required for us to still concieve it as fluid movement. But the animation in the ad is drawn with much more frames per second, I guess in order to match the framerate of the real life footage, which probably is 25 or 30 frames per second. And they used these extra frames to make every character constantly moving in some way, be it wiggling their arms, looking around ect. It's something usually not done in anime tv series aside from specific sakuga scenes.

Here's a fun story. I'm from Iceland and the company that licensed the show to be dubbed and aired in Iceland only licensed the first 50 episodes or so, and then never any more and there were also never any reruns. Luckily me and my sister managed to record around 40 episode on several VHS tapes and I rewatched them over and over myself as I played the games for the millionth time. The first 4 movies were also licensed and dubbed and I had those but a quirk about the 4th movie is that it was released a good deal later than the first 3 and the voice actor for Ash was actually a kid at the time and didn't return for the 4th so instead they got an adult man to do it instead and it's very jarring. Unfortunately they're all gone now, lost or sold when my mom moved houses years ago and the Icelandic dub is considered lost media which is very sad.

I had a Japanese foreign exchange student that brought the first Pokémon movie on VHS and I got to watch it (without understanding) before it came here. I felt so special. It was the legit Japanese release so no subtitles or anything,. Those times were so simple. Although no one believed me until they saw it and realized I knew what I was talking about. I could only talk about what I saw though i didn’t really have a clue what was going on haha. And it wasn’t the special edition because it didn’t have Mew in it. Damn I got to see some ultra rare stuff I guess!!!! I wish I remember more, it was so long ago. I just remember watching the movie in Japanese before it was released here. And a good few months, the student was newly arrived and had brought it with him. It was pretty much the same though I don’t recall it being different, it might have looked less mastered but I watched it on such a small TV I wouldn’t have noticed. The students we had also brought over a bunch of OG Gundam movies (Japanese releases of course). It’s what gave me such love for Japan, enough that I use a Romanized Japanese name. My handles just my English name converted into Katakana. But yeah I thought I’d just clarify I’m not Japanese because my story would be confusing haha.

Here are my two cents. I'm Italian and I can tell you that our VHS tapes were kinda sorta the same as the US ones. Except for the few small differences: -The entire series was released both in plastic and cardboard boxes, with the latter being a newsstand edition. The plastic ones had the same art as the US tapes but the side had a rainbow pattern. The cardboard ones had the red sides like the US tapes, but with different art (just generic stock art of Ash and Pikachu on various colored backgrounds). The tapes themselves were also different in the cardboard box release, with 2 episodes per tape instead of 3. -There were no trailers, but the company logo made up for that. The company that released the tapes was called Bim Bum Bam Video and was made just to release on VHS the cartoons that were aired on the namesake cartoon block that aired on the channel Italia 1, so the logo was like a small montage of scenes from many of the other cartoons that were published thus far by the company set to an abridged version of the programming block's 1990 opening song. -The theme song was obviously the one from the Italian dub. There were no short version to transition between episodes. And also no Pokérap, since the Italian dub didn't use it at all (but still had an Italian version that was released exclusively in the Italian version of 2.B. A Master alongside an alternate take of Pokémon Dance Mix that haves a completely different melody than the original one but with the same lyrics) -The K9 Caper tape had four episodes instead of 4 in Italy too, and the tape was actually marked as "Special edition" because of that. -Also they never went past Kanto and the Orange Islands. In fact, here in Italy a large chunk of the Pokémon anime was never released on home media. Kanto and Orange Islands were released both on VHS and on DVD, and on DVD they also released the first two seasons of Black and White. But everything in between and after that? NOTHING.

So the swedish vhs tapes each had two episodes. All in plastic cases. The fronts was always weird, they just had a missmatch of generic jpegs. While the back usually had a screenshot from the show. The very first vhs we got had the first two episodes and was titled after the second episode, the front cover was when Ash battled the guy with the sandshrew. Literally sandshrew attacking Pidgeotto. Back image was from the Bulbasaur episode.

Well, The Dog of Flanders is phenomenally relevant as far as the anime goes in Japan, as well as like you said, the book, albeit in Japan. I am really glad you touched on these classic anime ads that would never occur in later years because they are generally for unedited anime, but back then Pioneer made no distinction between how certain anime would be considered more teen friendly in the West rather than child friendly. Ranma *is* of course a kids show in Japan, but it's funny that in a world before 4kids picking up Yugioh, One Piece, Shaman King, and more, Pokemon viewers were a trailer and a trip to the video store away from things their parents wouldn't want them seeing if you were in the west, such as anime breasts.

19:34 I imagine the reason it looks off too you is that it's much more fluid than in the anime, which kinda makes sense considering how this is a 30-second commercial as opposed to an ~24 minute episode, so assuming the animation budget was about the same as for an episode, you wouldn't need to spread that budget nearly as far, and even if we're to take the fact that this probably didn’t have the same budget as an episode because of how much shorter it is, depending on how much lower it is, they could still have plenty of money for more fluid animation. To be fair, it's not like I really have a clue what I'm talking about here, so this could all be wrong, but that’s just what I think is going on here. Also, yes, I would consider "plot" the right turn here since the commercial is telling a story in a way. Furthermore, while I understand the question about how the bus specifically becoming a Game Boy Pocket was from a logical perspective, but to play devil's advocate (or I guess strawman) and pretend that you're arguing from the perspective of it as a creative decision, that was just the latest model of the Game Boy at the time; there was the Game Boy Light a few months prior, but that was Japan-exclusive, so it doesn't really count when talking about North America specifically, and the Game Boy Color was still two months away by this point, so it only made sense to use the Pocket.

I'm gonna be a total geek about episode order for a sec. When Porygon pushed everything back by four months, the release order for every holiday special went out of whack. "Princess vs. Princess" and "The Purr-fect Hero" were never meant to air right next to each other, but that's how damage control went down. Truth be told, when 4Kids marked Purr-fect as a Season 2 episode, they put it exactly where it was meant to be before Porygon ruined everything. As for why Princess was also a Season 2 episode, it was mostly because 4Kids had to brush away a lot of Japanese text and they didn't have the time or money to do it within their first-year contract. Whoops. Also, "Pallet Party Panic" wasn't the last Indigo episode. It was the FIRST Orange episode. Most people don't think of it that way because it was still 1999, Ash was still in Kanto, the out-of-order Christmas specials hadn't aired yet, and Kids WB refused to change the theme song because they wanted to keep Brock's departure a secret for as long as possible.

Holy fuck, I was already in my nostalgic comfort zone when you were going through the content of the tapes themselves, but those promos at the end of the Indigo Plateau tapes made me feel some kind of nostalgic glee somehow. Just hearing the off brand "Pikachu!" as Pikachu gets on to the bus made me clutch my chest and smile. To some, it's cursed. To me, it's fucking 90's kid childhood memories that keep me going as the rest of the world burns around me. Not to mention those guitar riffs from It's Love as the Ranma promo plays. Honestly, everything except The Dog of Flanders got to me in some way. Nothing against The Dog of Flanders, but I saw so little of it as a kid that I'm not as sentimental about it as I am towards something like the announcer going full ham by shouting "KIMBAAA!!" This was a joy, good sir. I thank you.

I've only seen one Johto tape ever during this period and I've never seen one for Hoenn. The most common tapes I'd encounter were Seaside Pikachu and The Great Race. I dunno how I figured this out but (And maybe you mention this, I haven't actually watched your video yet, but will later today) that on the side, the VHS code actually had them numbered, and that's how I watched it, until the middle of Junior High, when my local Fox station started playing them at 6 and 6 30 AM - and I wouldn't have had to get up for the bus until around 6:30, but I got up at 5:45 so I could watch Pokemon. My family often rented VHS but one day we went to the video store and basically ALL the VHS stuff was gone.... That's when we finally got a dvd player. 😆

I watched a lot of the Indigo League tapes as a kid, and I was sometimes confused about how some of them were out of order, and confused on how some episodes seemingly only aired on TV and didn't make it onto the tapes, even though they were not banned episodes. Interesting.

You should've way more views dude, I've spent last 3 hours watching your videos (took a day off today to relax a bit) and they are fucking amazing! Hope your channel will get more popular, and waiting for next Monkey Ball video!

Yo, that means a lot, thank you very much! I started my channel when I was in a pretty dark place and I'd watch KZbin to take my mind off stuff so I'm happy to hear that someone uses my stuff to unwind. Can't promise an exact time for the next SMB video because I have a lot in the pipeline but it is being worked on. :D

I remember those Kimba promos. Sadly, I don't think the show was ever fully dubbed.

I remember when I discovered that 2BA Master had the FULL POKERAP in the 90s, I about died of excitement. I listened to it over and over. What a great CD.

Picture Perfect has 4 episodes because those are the last 4 episodes of Season 1, so instead of having one tape straddling the season gap they did a 4-episode volume. Why they didn't give Pallet Party Panic or the last two Johto Journey's episodes the same honor I don't know. Fun fact, Picture Perfect was a red case release in the US while Siren in Australia and New Zealand held it back until later where it released in a yellow case as Volume 22. The latter volumes of the yellow case releases became rarer and rarer (at least in NZ) to the point where I don't even think they came out outside rental stores. I think I saw a Round One! tape at a Blockbuster back in the day, but I've never seen a PAL Friends and Rivals tape in person.

Coming back after a few years, still love this video. I got a dvd of the 2nd season of the orange island episodes for my 6th birthday and it was my favorite for a long time. At one point i saw the 3rd season and my dad got it for me. Ive never really seem the first few episodes of the orange islands because of it. I think those seasons hold up pretty well, it made me love Scyther and Tracey

I had 12 of the red kanto tapes and 4 yellow ones along with the first 3 movies, mewtwo strikes back, and pikachu's winter vacation 1 and 2. I had a lot but not not even close to catching them all. They really shouldve at least made the yellow tapes blue to be like pokemon red and blue

One thing I want to mention is that many of the early Indigo League VHS Tapes did not have the Dog of Flanders trailer on it. Otherwise, you did an excellent job with this video. You really put a lot of time and care into it.

Ah, Dogasu's Backpack. That's a blast from the past. Wish I could still enjoy his episode comparisons, but he's an excellent source for behind-the-scenes stuff.

That cut-off date was 2004. I remember because my grandmother was paranoid about new technology breaking too easily & never wanted to upgrade. After that, we kind of had to. Lol

God, seeing those trailers from the end of the Indigo League tapes takes me back! I had no idea what those animes were (cause I was an inpatient little shit with a terrible attention span lol), but they always fascinated me. Especially the Ranma one. Up until I think middle or high school, that trailer was my only exposure to the series. I didn't understand anything that was going on or who any of the characters were, but it looked really cool to me back then.

Hey Jonii, great job on the video! I loved hearing about the history of these tapes. It's very impressive you did so much research just to put all of this together. In fact, I started to collect these tapes myself. I have 5 of the Indigo League tapes and I'm expecting a lot more very soon, three Johto Journeys tapes and the first, second and Mewtwo Returns special. Could you tell me what Pokemon VHS tapes you have? I'd love to hear your feedback.

Most of the Kanto tapes, Johto Journeys, and movies I had as a kid and seem to be fairly common but JLC and Advanced seem harder to come by. I've also never seen a Destint Deoxys VHS for sale, hence why it's the only movie I'm missing.

Speaking of Pikachu having a different VA, I always think back to that episode "The School Of Hard Knocks" where the gang goes to this academy place and for the whole episode Pikachu has a very different voice compared to any other episode I can think of.

I never had any VHS tapes but I did have 3 possibly 4 DVDs (The First Movie, PokeFriends, and Thunder Shock(along with maybe Heroes but I can't remember if I got it from the library or not (either way I don't have it anymore)) (Note:I was born near the end of Vhs' life (and got interested in Pokemon during Black and White) and we already had these DVDs before I discovered we had them so they were probably my older brother's.)
