In my humble opinion, There Will Be Blood is the greatest film score in the history of cinema. It is surely the most beautiful and original for me and every time leaves me staggered and awestruck when I experience it. It’s certainly one of the most significant pieces of music in this century. I feel like it will be held in the same esteem as the most important scores of the 20th century. All I can say is that Jonny Greenwood is single-handedly saving the stagnant world of film music and The Oscars don't deserve Jonny Greenwood...

it's not that it is make the movie not worthy, it's just recognizing one of the top roles of what makes a movie... If a score is that noticeable because of how in-tune it is to setting the feel for its story. it deserves attention. its what emphasizes important scenes. =)
@markdarnell614

@@MohamedAlaa-vy7rq - the NY Times critic, Alex Ross has said that Greenwood's score for "There Will Be Blood" functioned as a "Character" itself, or - the "Psychology" of the scene. While that is very intriguing - it's disingenuous. The music was composed seperately from the Film, and Paul Thomas Anderson merely "Placed" the music into the film....something Hitchcock occasionally did with Bernard Hermann. While Jonny Greenwood is a unique artist, he is still evolving - and still under the influence of his Idols: Penderecki, Messiaen, and Takemitsu. Not BAD Influences by any stretch!

Jonny Greenwood is a musical genius, no doubt about it! I'm recently feeling very inspired by him as I have a soundtrack to make for a half hour film. Also, Radioheads latest album is mindbogglingly incredible. Possibly their best yet in my opinion. Either that one or In Rainbows. My 2 favs.
@buckbumble
@buckbumble 8 жыл бұрын
I think albums where Yorke gets a bit too involved is evident and it gets a bit dreary. When he and Jonny work side by side, it's Magical. See In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool, you can hear both of their influences clearly and they work so well together. Then listen to King of Limbs or Kid A where Yorke went a bit heavy on the electronics. Sometimes is a bit hard to stomach. Not saying either are bad album, they both are excellent but they don't reach the musical or emotional depth than the aforementioned two in my opinion.

Thom was definitely my fav memeber until 2007 when this man composed the haunting score of There Will Be Blood. And following that, his work throughout the last decade in films + his clear clear influence in Moon Shaped Pool has cemented Johnny Greenwood as THE face of Radiohead for me. I wonder how many of those older songs that I used to give Thom the credit for were actually Johnnys brainchildren

Check out KinderBueno Bueno's comment above. These aren't all Johnny Greenwood pieces. Some of them are fairly old, like the Reich stuff. You should check out Reich. I like "Music for 18 Musicians". After that, have a look at some other minimalist pieces, like early Philip Glass (I think "Einstein on the Beach" is awesome).

25:55 Self Potrait is such a beautiful and brilliant piece. The subbtle chords from Jonny's Starcaster, the orchestra in this dissonant yet welcoming key, the generative Music idea, with the crowd playing random notes in a html synth written by him. Just amazing. 1:08:04 Loop. Incredible how he builds up a haunting piece around the use of pedals (Looper in this case)

+Mart P This gets into very controversial territory. As much as I like Greenwood, some of his work can be very derivative of composers who came before him. I do appreciate that he is exposing this kind of music to fans of his pop music and giving contemporary classical a larger audience. And as far as the "popular 'artists' who cannot even write their own songs" statement. I do not think they are less of artists for not performing their own material. Except for Greenwood, not one person in this orchestra had a hand in the compositions. I don't think that makes them any less of artists.
@ghostpuppet31
@ghostpuppet31 8 жыл бұрын
+thefrenzee ee I agree with you and understand exactly what you mean, however there is a widening gap between popular 'music' and music composed with care, attention and detail, not to mention talent over looks! Am an artist and would not consider myself so if I couldn't express my own uniqueness.

What a stonking stonking concert. Wish I'd have been there. Totally gob smacked and almost lost for words. This "tore de force" called Johny Greenwood, has just knocked "Stop making sense" off the top spot of my fav "live" concert videos. I believe 'Self-Portrait with Seven Fingers' is the only composition here not currently available in some form elsewhere - Miniature is one of the Three Miniatures from Water, and Loop occurs in a couple more live recordings though not anywhere 'official' yet.
