I love this scene so much. The scope of the character Jonny Lee Miller plays is breathtaking. the tics, finger movements, turns of phrase, all of it. pure art. really pulls me into the series. could be a master class on acting.

The gentle, matter of fact way Sherlock uses to explain himself to Joan seemed to draw her towards him. In that moment he showed an immense amount of respect, not trying to to excuse himself from the consequences of bad behaviour but giving her a gentle warning about it.
@LyingTube Жыл бұрын
This is such a wonderful well-crafted scene for Sherlock's character. But Joan really nails it when she points out that he's already changed, and in the seasons that followed... he changed so drastically that we could almost struggle to call him the same person soon here. He cares for his coworkers (Bell, Gregson), his Irregulars (Harlan), and complete strangers (sex slave victims, drug addicts, etc), even when it's not to his benefit to step in, and he goes beyond accommodating Joan when he pursues involvement to aid her in both having and raising a child. As amazing as this scene is, I find it incredible just how WRONG Sherlock ultimately turned out to be about everything he says of himself here.

What I enjoy most is how realistic he is. You can be nice to people, but that doesn't classify you as good and vice versa. But it resonates well with the character, the only two people Sherlock tries or has made an exception for being Watson and Miss Adler(for the most part...or less).

He is seriously on another level. I have never ever before seen such an outstanding performance from an actor as a character. Lucy was perfectly cast as his partner. Elementary has overtaken my longstanding firm favourite shows of Frasier and Breaking Bad. Not all episodes were without holes though but when the quality of acting is this high then allowance can be given.

Benedict is a wonderful Sherlock in matters of appearance and depicting how such a mind would work, but Johnny has the missing zaniness. The convoluted lengths the cases and Sherlock's deductions go to on Elementary make them much more satisfying for me to watch.
@Sausagemasterrr4 жыл бұрын
the original sherlock isn't "zany". he isn't reduced to a cartoon character who is always always always right and the smartest and the best in the room like benedict is
@gregwilliams18793 жыл бұрын
That's what I like about this show. Sherlock is wrong many times and things happen because of it. Maybe deductions he missed or things he should have caught onto sooner come back to harm the people close to him. I haven't seen alot of the BBC version maybe the first 3 episodes because from what I hear and from the little I have seen Sherlock is out on a pedestal above everyone else and he treats everyone like ass. It just doesn't seem appealing to me
@Thatslifebro_2 жыл бұрын
@@gregwilliams1879 yeah, that hits the Nail right on the head. The first season of Sherlock is the closest the show ever came to actually doing any detectivework. From season two onwards the cases are just used to show how cool and smart Sherlock is, how weird Moriarty is, and how Sherlock insults everyone around him.

Everyone that has played both Holmes and Watson has the right to play that character however they choose. Comparing them and criticizing them because you don't like the actor or actress is pointless.

When someone shows you who they are…
@le_th_2 жыл бұрын
When a sociopath tells you "I make an exceptional effort for you, but there will be occasional fall out" you better HEED that very understated warning. They can make an effort and, in doing so, LULL you into a false state of you believing there is good in them, when there is not. What they must do is override their own instincts...to choke the life out of you with their bare hands. THAT is what they must override, and it is the "occasional fallout" of which he speaks. These individuals should NEVER be romanticized. They can see through others and recognize weaknesses probably before you recognize them in yourself. They will toy with that spot...the weakness...for as long as you allow it and...worse still...punish others severely for failing to obey their whims and wishes. The sociopath is the person who says, "You have no right to end this relationship until I say it is over" and they will KILL YOU...with their bare hands...and then claim they were being merciful, putting you out of your own misery, and/or tell others you wanted to die. This is not hyperbole.
@christinamcilwaine3502 жыл бұрын

@thegrimmretails3777 Жыл бұрын
@christinamcilwaine350 no but it's still very useful information
@Marian-tb2ts Жыл бұрын
Holmes is not a "sociopath," whatever that means. It is not an actual psychiatric diagnosis. Holmes never murders anyone, although he comes close with Moran when he is seeking vengeance for the imaginary death of the imaginary Irene. Yet when Moran explains he could not have been responsible for "Irene's" death, Holmes listens and stops. Later in the series, he comforts Kitty that she has avoided "the stain of murder" and, even later, reproaches his father for believing he was capable of attempting the latter's murder. When he is accused of the murder of an immigrant cleaning woman, of whom he has no recollection, he agonizes over whether, while a drug addict, he could have been capable of murder. He concludes not, and tracks down the real murderer. No, Sherlock is neither a "sociopath" nor capable of murder.

I'm just saying, he's a great - yet a bit underrated - actor and I consider this one of his finest moments in Elementary.
@lapassion2411 жыл бұрын
oh ok, so you are looking at someone's work, : ) i thought some philosophy or something hehe.. compare him to Ralph Fiennes. the English Patient , or someone like Jim Carey .. good but in what style, or taste..?? i dont understand good acting then : ) i think Jonny Lee Miller is both.. i have never seen him in love drama before..
@lapassion2411 жыл бұрын
but understand, this particular part youre talking.. you just see more of him through his face, and less body gesture.. but more on tone of voice.. and how he holds it together that scene...
@KostasFlamourtzoglou11 жыл бұрын
lapassion24 and how he presents the truth of his character without trying to gain Watson's acceptance. "That's who I am", take it or leave it. Also in this scene you can see how he perceives his relationship with Watson and perhaps leaves a hint as to his feelings towards her (we know so far there's been no love affair between them - it's strictly professional).
@lapassion2411 жыл бұрын
so his feeling toward her is just WORK, but if you keep watching toward the end, im not sure if he is still in love with Moriaty or not, even though he chose to put her to jail, but you can't always know for sure, if there is still love left between Moriarty & Sherlock, a test is always needed : ) and as for Watson, i dont know, i always feel like he is exploring her more and more.. but some how i feel empty in his character, because it's always about accuracy and perfection, which there is nothing wrong with that, but no rest or peace, you can only find that when you find the substance of GOD or something can't not be explained when you enjoy someone .. Sherlock as smart as he is, he still strives to prove to people, the things that people dont find peace/comfort in, but he does.. like details.. etc.. and i dont mind, he tries, to have responsibility and to endure, as much as he can .. he is constantly moving, because things around him is constantly moving, and that is good i dont mind that..

its a good show but the fanbase is annoying always trying to complexionalize the show not im saying this show is simple cop show,no but this show isnt as complex the fans made it seems The Show is complex in its own way,it had the advantge of playing with emotion and character development due to longer episodes and the Cast putting more emphasis in emotion thanks to the alternate character interpretation diffrent from the actual novel, it is a breath of fresh air for some people but its sad to say that Elementary gives me the feels of CSI,not im saying CSI is bad ITS FREAKING AWESOME lol but what also annoys me the fans of Elementary undermine BBC's Sherlock character development and complexity ,when it clearly show that,Sherlock is able to keep up with Elementary storytelling even with shorter episode and is overall better in story telling and narrative its no use comparing these two show,it uses two diffrent style of storytelling tbh,JLM sherlock is good in its own right,adding a " human" feel to Sherlock,the advantage of potraying alternate character interpretation
