U should not reconnect your chain like in video always use a quick link at the specified gears chain, or use a master pin as your chain will be viable to snap over time happy ridding peps

Be careful leaving a bike chain in vinegar for more than 12 or so hours; bike chains are coated in zinc, which releases carcinogenic stuff at this point. Take extra care with handling and disposal :)

Rather than waiting days for the vinegar to work, why not just use WD40 and a wire brush - the chain will become shiny immediately...having said that, it will mean your "you tube videos " wont be as long !!

Yes it's safe, only leave it for a day or so to remove the surface rust. If you left it for a couple months it'd probably weaken the metal some

It should, depending how bad the rust is. If really bad and links all seized probably too much. You just dont want to run a a chain with run on it or itll wear down all your gears too. Depends how nice of bikes I guess too. You can get always get new chain for $10-20 too.

Evaporust is SO much more effective in getting rid of rust on a chain. Plus, whatever rust remove you use, rinse it off with water and dry it immediately with compressed air or a blow dryer after removing it from the solvent, to get rid of the rust remover and any remaining loose rust, and prevent flash rusting. In any case, there's a word for a rusty chain: junk. It'll never run the same again, no matter how well you derust, clean and lube it. Too much metal was removed for that to be possible.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 6 ай бұрын
Yeah I like evaporust too. You're right if too rusty, junk. I've only ever cleaned super light surface rusted chains like this one
@kovie9162

@@JonnyDIY And it's not just about performance but safety. A chain that's too rusted is weakened even if thoroughly derusted and could break under load and severely injure the riders and others.

It does, I put chain back on the bike. Been using it ever since, 3 years probably. Just surface rust, dont wanna use a really bad chain, best to just replace those. Pretty cheap. I figured I'd clean that one cause bike was like brand new, someone had just left it out in rain

did you pop the pin rivet all the way out or did you just keep it on the edge dip it in vinegar & when done slide it back in? i read you that you shouldn’t reuse rivets but i also read if you don’t fully pop it out, it’ll be fine

I did this and fkd it up. The pins are coming loose. Vinegar loosed the rust but it also etched the parts so the pins are all loose. Don't do this. Bye, it also removed the top protective layers off the chain.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
If pins are now looser than a new chain, your chain was already probably too worn out and needed replacing
@12villages
@12villages Жыл бұрын
@@JonnyDIY It's about 6 months old. Checked it with a scale and it hasn't stretched. I left it in the rain for a month and it turned red. After vinegar treatment, some pins slide right off. I removed the bad ones and added bits from a new chain. The black blue rust resistant coating on it was similar to the blue coating found on a rifle barrel. The vinegar has stripped it off so I assume it will rust again soon.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
@@12villagesyes the vinegar can strip some coatings off depending how long leave it in. I've done to a few chains before and no issues with any of them after reassembling and lubing them up. Although I do store them inside

@@JonnyDIY It was a new chain and it starting rusting quickly and it was starting to lock so that it was starting to jump up on my drivetrain. I left it for a day in the vinegar and when I lifted it out, it just fell apart. Nearly all the outer links had a cut making it weak and it just all fell apart into pieces. I did this with 2 chains and they both had the same effect, difference being is that one was an old one. Are there any alternatives? I tried Cola but that barely worked. And I put it in 5% malt vinegar instead of distilled white vinegar, so could that be the problem?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 11 ай бұрын
@@dominikwisniewski1818 yes maybe the vinegar was too strong or way those chains were put together. Ive never had any close to falling apart as the links should be peened together

No they'll be different lengths for different bikes and different sizes too depending as well. Best to check forums for specific bikes or go to local bike shop and they'll sell you one. Usually barely any more money to go to local vs online too and will be happy to share knowledge. If you have local shop near you 👍

@@JonnyDIY Thank you 😊 I bought a carrera vengeance bike for £30 (I think it's $35-$40 on conversion as a guess) but it has a snapped derailleur and gear hanger, rusty chain (very rusted) and for some reason they sanded it to remove the carrera writing on one side so it is a bit beaten up but perfect for a first go as its not too much of a project but enough to get into it. Do you spray paint bikes also? Wondering what paint is needed for bikes as although I really want to keep the carrera signage it's not possible on the one side at all so I'm thinking of spraying the bike and find new decals hopefully if they do them.
