i had 2 of these at our workshop, 1 worked after replacing caps but failed after a few months again, i had thrown them in the corner, then a 3rd came in so decided to look again, found your video, now all work!. the track must continue to corrode after cap replacement. I ended up replacing all caps except the larger power filter one, and found several at the leaking stage, definitely recommend replacing all if doing this fix!

I've got a Furuno echo sounder I have to fix this weekend with broken connectors, luckily the guy has another unservicible unit with good connectors. I was looking around youtube and came across your video. I was thinking of fixing the broken one as well. Anyway its nice to see an experienced techo looking for the obvious before delving into the circuit. I'm our local retired electronic guy that does this type of work for fun and sometimes a bottle of scotch (mainly from the guys that own boats and not the poor farmers). Thanks

Gee Johnny Fix I have a FCV 588 and it stopped working the next week after going out. Pulled wire out from fuse box and connected it to a battery and sounder stated working. When I touched the power lead it stopped again. Had a look into the pins on the sounder and the power lead had a green type build up. I sanded that off and sprayed it with contact cleaner but that did not work so I sprayed the pins with WD40 bingo sounder working again. I hope this will help others

Dear Johnny, thanks a lot for your video. I have the same fish finder with the same problem. My brother Jaime and I have replicated your repair and IT WORKED!!! It was not until we jumped the trace with a copper wire that it worked. It is very strange. It seems that this is a programmed obsolescence. Why is there a hole prepared to pass the wire through? Anyway, your video explains the procedure perfectly and helps a lot to keep understanding electronics. I teach at university (environmental engineering) and I must say your pedagogy is far better than mine. Kind regards from Mallorca, Pere and Jaime
@JonnyFix6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate the comment and glad I helped with your problem. Planned obsolescence is a bit of a stretch here but yes it certainly does exist. Not surprised you had the same failure as these caps are destined to leak and the units are always mounted one way then gravity dictates the leak will run to the same area on the board and cause the same damage. The hole for the wire is just pure luck :) Happy sailing!

If you mean the 3 pin device I think it's Q13 and likely a transistor of some sort (I no longer have the device for reference). Q14 is the 8-leg IC closer to the white connector.

Hi Jonny, I'm writing from Italy. I have a Furuno fcv 585. There is this problem where the screen works but all I can see It's white, theres no immages shown. The buttons work just fine with sound and all. I would be very glad if you could help me. Thank you
@JonnyFix2 жыл бұрын
I guess firstly make sure no water has got inside it and everything is clean. If there's any corrosion you will need to deal with that. If everything looks clean try removing then re-inserting the flat screen flex cable in case the connector came loose or the connection has gone bad over time, this can sometimes help. If it's not something simple like that I'm not sure without some advanced troubleshooting e.g. use an oscilloscope to see if there is data on the connector that would suggest the processor is making an image, if so the lcd might be damaged or missing a power rail. If not there could be an issue with the processor or related circuitry that makes/relays the data.

@JonnyFix4 жыл бұрын
You need to look for the physical damage. If it makes noise and there are lights then it's probably a broken display or if you shine a light close to it and see a picture then maybe the backlight tube broke (if it's not led).

I don't know. Check the manual for a self test function. If you can borrow a known good transducer to test with, or plug your unit into another boat setup that might prove if it's the unit or the transducer. I don't believe they run magnetrons.

I don't have a rate as I'm not in business but any repair shop worth their salt should be able to do this straight forward repair. If I had to guess you might be up for $60/hr and if as simple as this won't be more than an hour. Some places might have a minimum charge even if not fixable. Cost of parts a couple $ each tops. These units aren't cheap so would be worth repairing for sure. My only concern is if the o-ring will still seal the case. I guess only an official service agent could provide a new one. Nothing a thin smear of silicone won't solve tho!
