Thank you for this. I agree with you about Moscow - best city in the world - and about Old Arbat, which is such a wasted opportunity. But I’d give anything to be able to walk down it today. Miss my beloved city so much!

Thank you very much for this. I have walked down that street, starting from the other end. I was a bit sad that you did not show the large Zhukov painting... While I agree that the souvenir shops are rather dull, I love the atmosphere in Old Arbat, especially in summer, with art and books etc. A small request: If possible, do a video on the Izmailovsky market and the Novodevichy Cemetery. That cemetery is the resting place of so many famous Russians. Thank you!

I was in Moscow last month and walk the old Arbat several times, it may look tacky for Russians but many Europeans and Americans it look very nice and warm and full of life at night, if you want to see tacky streets go to Paris or London there you will find plenty places that are tacky and unsafe.

AHH, Old Arbat is terrible😅😅😅 in the Soviet times it was a cozy and iconic street where intelligentsia lived and poets recited their poems, but in the 90s it was ruined) I think if they closed all cheap souvenir shops selling kitch, prohibited promoters, and put more trees - it could be a pleasant street, but now I just despair when I see tourists visiting it - I don't want them to think this place defines Moscow😢

Moscow has an amazing architecture, it’s a huge and very clean city, more than 3 times bigger than NY and the most populated city in the whole Europe , despite these facts the city is just beautiful . Saint Petersburg has even more impressive European architecture.

I share your sentiments on this particular street. It used to be better, though. Even in early 2000s it was a little better, more genuine, atmospheric. But now it is just a hollow husk of itself, just a commercialized venue, full of the 'meh!' restaurants and souvenir shops. I feel the same towards Montmartre in Paris. Time Square in NYC. The entire central London. A tacky theme park. Boring. Mummified history.

I love this street I spent so much time hanging out here while my girl did her work in the neighborhoods and I even was lucky enough to get to McDonald's that was there at the end and I always found a nice secret bathroom just in the left-hand building where you started this video. I came back to California just before the invasion of Ukraine only to get a new Visa so I could return to my home in Moscow where I had been living for 3 years with my beautiful girl. I miss her so much I have a moral conflict with living there right now so it's nice to see this video and reminds me of the place that I spent so much time making so many awesome friends and hanging out

You are absolutely right, it's too commercial now days, unreasonably overpriced, overdone with tacky decorations, too much of everything makes this street look tasteless, ugly. I do remember Arbat when it was just a street, popular among the young people when gathered into groups at night playing guitars, singing .
@billbauer97959 ай бұрын
I heard a lot about Arbat Street, but I have never seen it before. Now that I've seen your video, I am not impressed! I don't mind the souvenir shops, I can just look up and ignore them. But the buildings themselves aren't particularly beautiful or special. Contrast this with, say Glasgow, where most buildings blow one's mind.

The Street should be reconstructed! It's way outdated! The renovation they made on New Arbat is an example!) The trees are absolutely necessary! Some herbs and flowers would be nice too! The street, actually, could be made warm(heated street) and green for most of the year. Just think of Zaryad'e Park or the embankment in Museon (part of Gorkiy Park).

Jonny Tinkle, you said you love Indian food. I do too, and I cook it myself. I am from Melbourne, and I am a retired pest control operator. In all my years in the industry, I have come across many a time, when a restaurateur would call me to treat his restaurant for German cocroach. This usually happens when a health inspector forces him to shut the place, and have it treated. In almost 90% of the time, it's an Indian restaurant.

Надеюсь когда-нибудь это будет местом притяжения респектабельной публики, место с лучшими ресторанами и барами в городе, красивым озеленением.
