Tip No. 10 - Don't stick to the center. Explore. If you're in Moscow don't be afraid to leave that Red Square behind and go outside - there are tons of cozy little towns and villages, and awesome nature - all in taxi/public transport reach if you don't have a car. Even Moscow itself is full of amazing places you can visit if you don't spend all of your time in city center. The same applies to St. Petersburg, or any other major city, I guess.

Very useful, and from personal experience agree wholeheartedly with every one. In SPb I was ripped off unmercifully by taxi drivers from the taxi ranks. When my hotel ordered one for me via Yandex they were always super cheap. Also agree with using public transport. Drivers will accept cash but I was the only one paying that way - everybody else tapped their cards on the many readers in the bus. I didn't know about Troika, and I didn't know I could have used my bank card (this was pre-sanctions). Lastly, I agree that people are super friendly and helpful. Definitely lastly, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour - I was there!

He will want to offer you drinks or food. you will have to go to his house to drink and eat the bline that his wife makes. all this especially if you are Italian. Re the entry interrogation, I was taken aside at Pulkovo along with a dozen or so other foreigners. I was treated with courtesy and professionalism for the 2 or 3 minutes of actual questioning. The delay was that all of us were held in the arrival hall until the decision had been made about all of us even though we were all separate travelers. At no time did I feel threatened in any way, definitely not the Hollywood KGB effect. On my next visit, the Passport official did spend some time considering my documents and looking up my records on her computer from the previous year. Presumably because she would have seen that I had been interrogated then and passed, she allowed me in without further interrogation. One point - you will be given your departure paper at entry. DO NOT LOSE IT. Otherwise great will be the trouble. I paper-clip mine to the passport page with the entry stamp.

Jonny, it would be useful for a stranger to know what docs / papers needed to get a Russian sim card, and opening a temp bank account as a foreigner.
No mention of having to register and not lose the little migration card, nor the fact that by registering, you will need to obtain a proof of registration printout to give to the immigration officer on leaving Russia. Finally,the registration process ishandled by the hotel, but if you are staying at anaaprtment or house, the legal owner of the house has to refister you and give you a copy of the registration confirmation so you prove you were registered on exit from Russia.

Moscow is a pretty warm city by Russian standards. It rarely gets colder than -25 in winter in Moscow. At least you won't have any problems with Scandinavian and Canadian winter clothes. Things are much more serious if you go to colder regions. In the Urals it can be -45 and below, and in Yakutia -60 is common in winter (77.8 is a confirmed record). But I think everyone understands that in places like Oymyakon it is mortally dangerous to be without special equipment and special training in winter. There is another point related to the weather that is often forgotten. Unlike Great Britain, most of Russia has a sharply continental climate rather than a maritime one. This means low humidity (very low in some areas) and a large daily temperature variation. During the day, the temperature can differ by 10 degrees or more.

at the airport, change 50 bucks, a maximum of 100, and then at the hotel ask where the nearest exchange point with the most favorable offers is. And change it there as needed. Keep in mind that if you are carrying more than 10,000 dollars or euros, then they must be declared at customs.
@Запискисангвиника2 ай бұрын
you should first get a M.. pay system card (screwtube deletes any posts containing its full name) at the airport right after arrival, change some bucks and put it via an ATM or an operator. Then enter card details into a taxi app, and voila - a trip cost will be automatically debited from it.
@gogaonzhezhora86402 ай бұрын
As you won't have a russian issued card you'll need at least a USD50 equivalent in Rubles cash to pay for the ride into the city. You can actually excahnge before the flight at home or at the airport in Russia. Obviously the rates at the exchange booth at the airport will be far worse than elsewhere. So don't go and exchange more than you need ASAP. The taxi ride or the public transport into the city you can then pay in cash for the first time. Note that the exchange rates by the banks in the city vary significantly. Only a few banks are interested in those operations and offer good rates.

Getting a taxi from the airport to central moscow? Why? Bring a dual sim phone, get your sim at the airport, change a little money at the airport to get to your hotel, and get your troika card at the airport. The points you mention are fair, but the lack of detail in the video means its not very useful for someone new getting off a plane imho.

Yes, you need to come with cash! But not only that, come with Euros or US$. I live in Switzerland, and though Swiss Francs are the best money you can have, outside of Moscow, Swiss Francs are considered exotic, and have a very bad exchange rate. And very important, please pay attention here, your Euro or US$ bills must be in an impeccable state! The slightest fold or damaged corner will be refused by the automatic testing machine that each bill will go through, up to 3 times. You might be less rich than you think this way! Before leaving, go to your bank and ask for bills in a good state. What I do id putting them between sturdy cardboard slabs, and vacuum seal them with a kitchen food sealer. This will help to keep your bills in an excellent state until you get at the bank to change them for Rubles that often are in a much worse shape.
