Again, thank you SO much for making these. When I first started, I was screwed over by an artist who took 2 full time paychecks worth of money from me for a really shitty, half assed course. She isn’t even close to half as good as a teacher as you are. I learned so much more from you and other tattoo artists on youtube. Have you got a patreon account we can subscribe to? (BTW for anyone living in Vienna thinking about purchasing a tattooing course, don‘t go to Osa Wahn. She will take a ton of your money and be really shitty to you in return. Also, she‘ll talk a lot about her private life instead of teaching you something.)

Coil machines are so amazing, I used them for years. But my hands can't handle them anymore. I just bought a new power supply from Tattcom that will allow you to set the CPS, and will adjust the voltage accordingly to keep the CPS consistent based on resistance of the skin. I watched your video on pepper shading and your recommendation to start at 80 to 90 CPS, so I'll be experimenting with this new power supply to see how this affects things. I do have several rotaries that have adjustable give, but I doubt they work as good and a good ole fashioned coil machine that is tuned well. Thanks for you knowledge. xox Terry

I find your analogies and teaching method one of the best out there. I'm a cosmetic tattooer using a spectra xion s and during lockdown working on a conversion to (in the first instance) basic tattoos. My machine has a 2.5 mm stroke..do you think this is enough and how do I establish hit and bog with my machine? Thanks, Lara
@JonoSmithTattoo4 жыл бұрын
I’ve not used the Xion-S before as it’s a SPMU machine. With the small stroke it’s probably setup well for lining however the SPMU machines I’ve tested in the past do tend to hit a lot softer than a standard tattoo machine so I can’t really give you a definitive answer as to whether that machine will work well for actual tattooing. My advice would be if you are transitioning into tattooing I’d probably look towards getting a dedicated tattoo machine eventually anyway as you’ll probably notice a big difference from using a SPMU machine like you’re used to. With regards to the bog, machines like this are pre-set so can’t really be adjusted. Hope this helps.
@Laraslittlegems4 жыл бұрын
Jono Smith thank you for that. I’m thinking of just investing in the xion as I know it better. Keep posting the way you are- I’m sure there are many others who are learn better through analogy and (I was a teacher for 10 years) I appreciate your way of explaining the theories much better than many others on KZbin. I cant thank you enough right now for doing what you do! Finally cleared up my confusion over tuning my machine, which I did manage to get it pretty near the sweet spot thanks to your thorough teaching. Now I'm off to watch your rotary vid, I did okay with my coil machines even though they werent tuned properly. But foolishly I went and lined a piece with my new rotary pen ( I got a javelin tornado) it was within my price range and I know everyone knocks hildebrant gear but I figured it would at least be better than one of those Amazon knock offs. In the end I had a hell of a time with it, the ink kept drying up and I beat the shit out of my skin :/ should've been a lil more diligent and got learned up on the differences between a rotary pen and coil machine. ALSO one more thing real quick. I heard you apologize for your graphics... ffs please dont sweat stuff like that, tbh I think they do what you intended and at the end of the day if some jackass wants to give you flack over your grafix/editing they obviously didnt come to learn anything and just trying to flex their fragile ego and ppl like that aren't worth your time and you certainly dont owe anyone an apology for the quality of said grafix.. you're giving away gold and mofos need to be appreciating what they are half ass paying attention to while they trolling comment sections.. you do you tho, mad props at your editing style, I especially like that I dont have to speed up your vids ;) cheers mate!

Hi✨ Here is another tip for tuning a coil machine: One of my tattoo teachers told me during my apprenticeship to listen to a bagpipe song (I was tortured with Amazing Grace for hours and hours) whilst tuning the machine - listen to that buzzing sound the bagpipe makes that’s constant in the background...! When the machine hits the same tune as the bagpipe buzzing sound, it should be tuned right. Want to see a video where you try this out🤓!! Also, the day my mentors said my apprenticeship was over, I was releases from my apprentice machine and went straight to buying a rotary cheyenne pen and hasn’t ever looked back to the heavy-wrist-KILLER coil machines.🌝

If you watch my video on How to tune a tattoo machine like a pro, you’ll find all the info you need as to gap size. I wouldn’t recommend putting a washer on it though. It sounds like you just need to screw the front contact screw down a little until you reach the right CPS.

Great great video with all information being said... Most politely positive In helping others understand about needle Puncture & bog? proper skin stretching can help as well with this. You're naturally have to stretch the skin to help prevent needle entry puncture and/ or durring bogging of the needle but sometimes if you stretch the skin too tight you create to much resistance and bogging as well there's like a happy stretch and a happy bog and everyone scin is different with the thickness and depth. Anyway good luck everyone this guy is great

Can you adjust the hit on the fk irons xion?
@dwane_ashby56 Жыл бұрын
Just got back into it after about 15 years. Was hoping to learn about changing the hit on my rotory pen. They are so quiet and seem to hit so hard I miss my coils, trying to learn about all this new tech as everyone seems to rave about them pens but it seems horrible to me
@bjj21 Жыл бұрын
So why does everyone say slow your machine down when color packing?? I have to press hard with my pen to pack. I'm assuming for these reasons. I've seen traditional packing where they press hard and go back and forth. I can't change the hit or stroke so I would assume crank up the volts? I can line great with it but packing is difficult. I'm guessing this machine doesn't hit hard enough at all. More needles mean more resistance. I just did my wrist and it turned out good but I know it's overworked. If I don't push hard, the needle bounces and immediately bruises. No matter how fast or slow or if I have the skin stretched to the max. Doesn't matter. Wish I could get solid answers to this. Might have to swing into some shops. Thanks for all the videos

This is much helpful for all beginners like me, I just want to know why most of the pro tattoo artists prefer to use coil rather than rotary? Is it because of the actual hit of needles all the way down to the skin? And rotary is moving in a circle motion?
@JonoSmithTattoo3 жыл бұрын
That pretty much sums it up yes. A coil machine is a completely linear up and down motion where as a rotary has to complete a cycle which makes the motion slightly different. This is why many artists can’t get on with rotaries. Personally I think the benefits of a rotary far out weigh the cons though. Thanks for watching!

If I understand correctly when I am tuning my machine I am starting at 1 volt and increasing until I hear the glorious coil machine sound. Then adding a volt. Here is where I am confused. If I do just that but when I use the machine or place my finger on arbiter bar it hurts/stops completely then I need to down/up in volts but this makes the music of my coil machine sound like Celine Deon on drugs. Im assuming if this the case then the gun itself isn't carrying electricity correctly?
