I've been tattooing on my own since the beginning for about 3 years now(mostly on myself) and have had some success but not without a lot of failures! I have not done an apprenticeship strictly due to not being able to afford to. The quality of my work before watching your videos improved quite slowly(having watched countless other "tutorials". Since watching your videos the quality(and speed) of my work has improved exponentially!! There is still a lot to learn as always, and I constantly am trying to find new and different techniques to expand my abilities! Like you said, knowledge is power and your videos are by far the most thorough and informative videos I've found(abs I've watched a lot of videos!!) Additionally to the information you provide your energy and obvious love for what you do and eagerness to teach others how to improve has made your videos not only informative but also fun to watch! I hope that when I have the ability to start an apprenticeship that my mentor is at least half as passionate and knowledgeable as you. Keep up the good work, and thank you for making these videos!

Thanks for this. Until watching this, I always used to have problems with loading too much ink into the cartridge needle. When dipping the needle into the ink, I always used to run the machine to pull the ink up, but after doing it the way you suggested, I'm no longer having this problem! Thanks again 👍🏼

Jono, thank you for all the tips and pro tricks to producing a better piece. Not having to deal with splatter or pooling of excess ink not only saves the stencil, but it also saves on skin irritation caused by excessive wiping or blotting of freshly tattooed areas. A tattoo is not going to be completely irritation or pain free unless it is a temporary jobber like what we used to get back in the day out of a cracker-jack box, but it does not need to be agonizing either.

Absolutely man, a few more u may not have had time to touch on for those who are just starting... Excess glide clumping in the needles/tube Needle speed way too fast "Cooking the ink" And one of the most common ive seen when working with newer artist is the most simple.... Just not noticing that their finger is blocking the 'flute' Like you in this vid their are always more and its epic to see u educating the next gen on both coil and rotary! In the end it all comes down to starting with a solid stencil, thanx for the vid keep it up

Would you give me an advise about the fake skin,are there any differences?I see your stencil really holds onto it,how do you apply it?Does it have something to do with the stencil paper aswell?could you send an amazon link to a fake skin you recommend?
@JonoSmithTattoo
@JonoSmithTattoo 3 жыл бұрын
He’s a link for a decent fake skin. This one tends to wipe really well. The best stencils for fake skin are hand drawn ones on hectograph paper. You can use a standard stencil solution or even washing up liquid (obviously don’t use that in real skin) but it works great on fake skin. Hope this helps. I think this video helped me identify a problem I was having. I don't ride the tube, but i still get pooling ink. I think it's because I load too much ink in my cartridge.

One problem I seem to have quite commonly now is I get splatter going backwards as I put the needle into the practice skin to start a line. I've got a slight bend in the needle and a rubber band on, what could be causing this?

Hey brother. Appreciate the videos! I was wondering what carts you used for the minion. Also, I’m kind of a Tater Tot, I was wondering what kind of cartridge you would use to do fine hair or feathers or like feathery sort of peach fuzz of a baby chick.

I used EnvyGen2 carts. The sizes for this were just a 10-09-RL and 10-11-CM. For anything really fine like you mention I always use a mag and angle it sideways to get a really fine edge for the delicate lines and shade over the top of them with the same mag to get the ‘fuzzy’ look. Thanks for watching!

@@JonoSmithTattoo No Thank You for making these videos brother. It’s so hard finding a person that will do an apprenticeship, let alone do it cheaper than 5-10 Grand and even knows the proper way to teach. I’ve learned a lot from you. So Thank you man.

Hello, just wondered if there’s a particular brand of cartridge you prefer? I’ve used envy gen 2 but they’re pricey so I tried a Chinese brand one and experienced a lot of ink splatter! Do you think brands play a role in this problem? Thanks for the super content as always!

As with most things in tattooing, you really do get what you pay for (that’s what I find anyway). I’m completely sold on EnvyGen2 just because they’re consistent and give great results. You are right though they do cost more than your average cartridge but they’re worth it for me personally. You could try a cheaper make but still decent quality like Pinup.
