@@BadlndsBob Manfred Mann didn't write this song Bruce Springsteen did. Once he started coving his own song this one lost air time unless requested. It's about Springsteen's younger days night racing hot rods. The Duece was his Duesenberg he revved up it's engine and it was his hot rod of choice "his runner in the night" (night race). It's not popular today because most younger people don't know about the Jersey Shore lifestyle around the strips near the boardwalks with their Merry go Round. One bad car crash and the Calliope (Merry go Round) crashed on to the ground because he got blinded by the lights (doing 80 mph's at the boardwalk). I remember as a kid having nights where I just couldn't sleep and about 12:30 or 1 a.m. I'd turn on the radio and it would inevitably be one of the endless rock anthems like this one or Stairway to Heaven or Paradise by the Dashboard Light or pretty much anything by Boston.

This song brings back so many memories for me along with The Eagles. I was a kid in the 70s and I remember listening to songs like this in between weather reports hoping and praying that our county would be called to not go to school because of snow or ice. Makes me feel all warm inside. Sometimes wish those days could come back but only if I could take my 2 grandsons with me. 🥰

@@paulahunt3508 thank you so much for your reply Paula. There's not a whole lot in this world to be happy about anymore but you grab and hold onto things that give you the warm and fuzzies. Mine are some music and of course my 6 and 4 year old grandbabies. I wish I could protect them from everything. My son and daughter were slightly upset when I announced that I love those two grandboys more than anything in the world. My two kids were like but what about us mom. I said sorry that's just the way it is lol. They are 33 and 28 so they need a lot of growing up still. Of course I love my daughter and son but the love I have for my grandsons is completely different you know? God bless you!

I used to listen to this when it was a hit in the 70s and hated it. I was 10 and it bored me. My wonderful uncle, who was like a dad to me, used to say how great it was and that I would get to like it. 45 years later I realised he was right. He passed away last year and I now love it. When the intro comes on it brings a tear to my eye and my uncle, brothers and I are sat in front of his radiogram again in 1974 counting down the top 40. Since DJs don’t have to play songs off physical media and switch them after they play, break songs have gone out of style. That’s why “Stairway to Heaven” was played so often; it gave you enough time to do your business, grab something to eat or drink and still be back to change it to “Aqualung”.

My dad was born in the 60s, so naturally, I grew up surrounded by classic rock. This was one of his favorite songs, I heard it constantly on the radio. It reminds me of all the childhood truck rides with him. I lost my dad to suicide in 2013. Now that I’m almost an adult, it’s getting so much harder rather than easier. I miss him more than ever. Basically, the song is about a dude driving around his town on his motorcycle. He sees the children playing and feels his age. Recruiters come out and try to get him for different jobs. The opportunity to be a star catches his eyes and he becomes obessed with it. He is blinded to everything else as he chases that. His community moves on, but he is still stuck on being a star.
