Worth mentioning is that the key reason Charles Darwin was on the Beagle was as a companion to Capt Fitzroy. Being that ships captains of the time often maintained command by distancing themselves from the crew Capt Fitzroy desired some person on board he could confide in on the voyage, thus apart from his survey & science duties this was the reason Darwin was aboard

Crystal Palace Park is a real gem and everyone who uses it is very protective of it. They wanted to build a big cinema complex there a few years ago but people got together and defeated it. And thank goodness fir that. People power!
@ernestbywater4113 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen in other articles about the Crystal Palace they moved the structure by taking it apart then rebuilt it on the new site. The structure was only ever intended to be a temporary one for the exhibition, so it was designed and built to be taken apart and recycled. That made moving it easy.

Great video, as always Joolz! On the 30th November 1936, my parents watched The Crystal Palace burn down and later went back for a lump of melted glass to keep as a souvenir (err, after it had cooled down!). They had noticed the blaze from their homes in Forest Hill. They said it was a terrible conflagration and the heat was intense. Rather a sad ending for the great building, but it was getting in a bit of a ropey state by then anyway...

Plus, Sydenham woods/Dulwich woods depending on who you ask with the strange medieval ruins deep in the woods

I think you'll find that the "strange mediaeval ruins" (if you mean the thing that looks like the remains of a small chapel) was actually a Victorian folly built in the garden of one of the big houses.

There's some very large (and old) oak trees left in Betts Park which is just down the hill from Crystal Palace. Could these also be remnants of Nor'wood? Betts Park also has the last remnant of the Croydon Canal, but it's more of an ornamental pond than a major shipping route these days.

However a bit disappointed that there was no mention of the motor racing circuit that existed at Crystal Palace Park from 1927 until 1972. The circuit held many international races and future world champions such as Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Emerson Fittipaldi , Jochen Rindt and many more raced there in the early years of their careers. The very first televised motor race was broadcast from there by the BBC in 1937.
