This film depicts the final days of Commandant Josef Johannes "Jopie" Fourie (August 27, 1879 - December 20, 1914), a Boer War veteran and leader of the 1914 Afrikaner Rebellion. The 1914 Rebellion broke out when dissatisfied Boers/Afrikaners rose up against the British backed government of the Union of South Africa when the latter declared war on Germany during the First World War. For his role in the rebellion Jopie Fourie would be the only combatant sentenced to death. This was due to him being an officer of the Active Citizens Force (ACF) and not having resigned his commission by the time the rebellion broke out. Fourie’s death would prove a divisive event in Afrikaner politics and serve as a potent conduit in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism, with Fourie being hailed as an Afrikaner hero.
