Mike Smith did a great job in writing a book about the warning system and how they were inaccurate. It's called 'When the Sirens were Silent' on Kindle or other digital sources, and details how the local NWS was issuing warnings for the wrong areas in Jasper County, which the tv meteorologists seen above were reading aloud until they noticed the power flashes on the outside cam.

You can hear the exact moment when they realize their mistake, the part when the camera shifts and suddenly the funnel is illuminated in full rather than partially obscured by dust and debris. No wonder at the panic in their voices. They're probably horrified to realize precious seconds of warning were lost for the people trying to escape its path.

One of the most scary parts about this tornado was how quickly it strengthened. It literally went from a rope touchdown to a violent EF-5 in under 2 minutes
@tallfarmboy12 жыл бұрын
I disagree... This storm intensified in a matter of a few seconds from a funnel cloud to EF-5 strength. The footage that you see on the towercam is where the funnel would have been at EF-5 strength over St. John's/Mercy Hospital. This storm was only a funnel cloud about 1.5 miles west of there. Both anchors did an excellent job of conveying the seriousness of this situation once it was realized that this was a tornado emergency.

The Tuscaloosa tornado wasn't wrapped in rain like this one was and didn't produce a clear signature on the radar. Even the TWC chaser team that was on the hunt for it stated it didn't look that impressive on radar. Notice that despite all of the hundreds of Joplin tornado videos on YT, you can't find a single one showing a clearly defined funnel.

This is a really good video which clearly shows the tornado as it entered Joplin. From this vantage point, the tornado appeared to be well contrasted and clearly visible. It didn't appear to become rain-wrapped until later in it's life-cycle. It's very unfortunate that the tornado developed suddenly and over a highly populated area that likely was desensitized to tornado warnings due to their high frequency of occurrence. Thoughts and prayers to all those who have been affected.

@arohn2007 This is the type of coordination I am talking about. There were a great deal of TRAINED spotters following this storm. However, the information that the NWS was broadcasting (while the tornado was on the ground) was that there were reports of funnel clouds in Galena, KS. If the NWS, TRAINED spotters, Radio, and TV had a dedicated radio frequency for relaying this vital information quickly... it could have perhaps saved a few more lives.

The NWS warnings for a completely different part of the storm that went north of the city and people were led to believe, that lived in the downtown area, that the storm had passed. I agree that they did do a good job once they knew for sure it was a tornado and many people credited them for saving their lives. However it was seriously downplayed at the beginning of this video. Whether by accident or not, them pretty much saying that the power flashes were probably lightening strikes when its evident on the video that its a tornado was a terribly misguided decision. I know hind sight is 20/20 but it should have been called a probable tornado instead of downplaying it.

@6891man Yes, a tornado warning was issued for Western Jasper county at 5:10pm. This storm was only producing a funnel cloud and there were tornado warnings for this storm for approximately 1 hour before, while it was in Kansas... It wasn't until it turned sharply south that it gained strength and became a tornado. But fact remains, it was tornado warned, they had power flashes on live camera, and even when the outline of the tornado was visible they weren't catching on as to what was going on. I've worked in the media, and this is clear demonstration of the difference between small market and large market, which is... experience and ability to handle such situations without freaking out.

Thank you!!! I’ve been saying this to people. They were completely incompetent. (obviously not intentional and doesn’t mean they’re stupid. They just had no business giving lethal weather warnings.) This video makes me sick honestly. We have got to get smaller market news stations to train their weather casters for this level of tornado emergencies. A LOT of lives would have been saved that day if someone like Mike Morgan, James Spann, or Gary England was in the booth. JMO and I’m not a meteorologist.

@TheCemetarian I will say that, the broadcasters were just announcing the latest information from the NWS, which was that there were a funnel cloud spotted near Galena... This station was the ONLY local media outlet that recognized the severity of this storm as it was happening...

I believe Joplin got plenty of warning about the tornado. Residents had at least a 15-minute lead time on the warnings. Sadly, many people - not just in Joplin - do not take tornado warnings seriously. Instead of taking shelter, many were likely outside trying to see the tornado. On top of that, the houses and businesses simply couldn't withstand the winds of that tornado, which is primarily why you had many fatalities.

@PelicanGuy The official report indicated that some people indeed didn't heed the warnings, but I'd say the biggest cause was simply that you had an exceptionally intense tornado heading through a very populated area, and wrapped in rain to top it off. Even if everyone heeded warnings, to be honest, not many structures are going to survive 250+ mph winds. Plus, Joplin did have SOME warning time, but the tornado rapidly intensified into a monster just before hitting the city.

Regarding a tornado's forward speed. A tornado can evidence no forward speed and hover in one place a significant time. Some tornadoes move slowly at 10, 20 or 30 miles an hour. But tornadoes have been recorded as moving forward as much as 70 or 80 miles an hour. Tornadoes also can, and do, change forward speech at different parts of their paths. The Tri-State statistics are accurate; they appeared in major newspapers at the time and have been verified over and over.

There was no warning that a MONSTER F-5 tornado was about to blow up the city. Otherwise, the NWS would've issued a TORNADO EMERGENCY for Jasper immediately, which they didn't do. Instead, they were issuing Tornado Warnings for areas west and north of downtown Jasper before the big tornado hit. They didn't issue the Tornado warning for downtown and areas just south until 5:17. The tornado hits about 5:35. It went from initial touchdown to F-5 status in 5 minutes. AND it was rain wrapped.

@vanni9283 Well. If it's just 1-2 things that are EF4/5 damage and everything else is EF3, the damage could've been caused by faults in the building, or some other thing - and once its destroyed it's no way to know. I think they use it mostly as a "most damage was in the range of." and judge that a EF5 would leave NO TRACE of anything tobrick/mobile homes Their FINAL report for the April 2, 06 tornado (which hit my city) was "F3 with some damage in the F5 range" (this was before EF, so just F).

What the NWS I think will normally do is bring professionals in to assess the spots of the strongest damage before they decide on a final rating. @tallfarmboy I haven't heard anything specific, but in my own experience in Northwest Georgia this spring, amateur radio operators were on the cutting edge in providing reports on the seriousness o the situations that presented themselves. Our Skywarn operations link up numerous repeaters around the state to the NWS office in Peachtree City, south of Atlanta. Ksn and Koam did excellant as Tv Broadcasters and Zimmer Radio Group, vital information was broadcast and who can blame any reporter from becoming excited in such an situation.I was 50 + iles away and when I heard that an Tornado was on the ground in joplin,Mo. I headed there to offer whatever help I could give,I wouldnt have known if it had not been for these very dedicated broadcasters and the Amateur radio operators that I am proud to be an part of.This is National Weather preparenss week!

You can also tell just by their voices that they realized they had made a mistake calling it lightening.

I live in SE Cherokee county that you will see was in the warning area that day. Was getting ready to go to Joplin in fact but kept getting delayed with calls. I noticed it was getting awfully dark in my house. Looked outside & did an "oh crap", turned the tv on & this weather forecast is exactly what I saw before it went off air. Made some heads-up calls to relatives & friends & was heading to basement when I got call that Home Depot was gone :( Still in shock!
